Roman religion

ローマ人the Romansの宗教religionは、オリンポスの神々the gods of Olympusがそのまま受け入れられ、それとローマ伝来の神々the gods introduced to Romeとを混合mixtureしたものが民族的信仰ethnic beliefの対象the objectとなり、ギリシア人の宗教the Greek religionと同じく現世的色彩earthly colorの強い多神教polytheismであった。

The religion of the Romans accepted the gods of Olympus as they were, and the mixture of them with the gods introduced to Rome became the object of ethnic belief, and like the Greek religion, it was a polytheistic religion with a strong earthly color.

Mithraism

しかし、帝政期the imperial periodになると、エジプトEgyptやペルシアPersiaなどの東方the Eastから流入した神秘的なmystic密儀宗教esoteric religionsがしだいに民族的信仰the ethnic beliefsを圧倒し、現世への関心the interest in this worldを離れた宿命的人生観the predestined view of lifeが強くなった。

However, during the imperial period, the mystic esoteric religions that flowed in from the East, such as Egypt and Persia, gradually overwhelmed the ethnic beliefs, and the predestined view of life that was far from the interest in this world became stronger.

それとともに、ストア学派the Stoic schoolsやエピクロス学派the Epicurean schoolsの哲学philosophiesなども、魂の平安peace of mindを説いて宗教の分野the realm of religionに近づいた。

At the same time, other philosophies such as the Stoic and Epicurean schools approached the realm of religion by preaching peace of mind.

Christianity

Based on this spiritual foundation, Christianity, which emerged from Judaism, was able to establish itself as a world religion, rejecting the persecution of the Roman Empire and the imperial worship of the emperor.

The endless series of ethnic hardships gave their beliefs a strong political color, and the Messianic thought would see the emergence of the Messiah (savior) destroy the heathens and let the Jews rule and unify the world. changed to a deaf belief.

Factors in the spread of Christianity

キリスト教徒The Christiansがローマ帝国the Roman Empireの大迫害the great persecutionに耐えてendure勝利を収め得たvictoriousのは、次のような理由があげられる。

The Christians were able to endure the great persecution of the Roman Empire and were victorious for the following reasons.

Roman society was at a turning point, and there was a lot of anxiety and turmoil in people's minds.

②神の前before Godに、階級class・身分status・貧富rich and poorの差distinctionはないとする教説doctrineは、特に社会不安social unrestに苦しむsuffering下層民the lower classesの精神的支柱spiritual supportとなったこと、

The doctrine that there is no distinction between class, status, and rich and poor before God became a spiritual support for the lower classes, especially those suffering from social unrest.

Recognition of Christianity and Establishment of Doctrine

相次ぐ迫害the successive persecutionsにもかかわらず、キリスト教徒Christiansがすでに無視できない社会勢力social forceとなり、上層階級the upper classesのなかにも信者believersの多いことを見たコンスタンティヌス大帝Constantine the Great(在位306年~337年)は、ついに帝国empire再建the reconstructionの精神的支柱the spiritual pillarをキリスト教Christianityに求めるseekに至った。

Constantine the Great, who saw that Christians had already become a social force that could not be ignored despite the successive persecutions, and that there were many believers among the upper classes, finally came to seek Christianity as the spiritual pillar for the reconstruction of the empire.

ミラノ勅令 the Edict of Milan

コンスタンティヌス帝Emperor Constantineはまず、313年にミラノ勅令the Edict of Milanを発して、キリスト教信仰の自由freedom of Christianityを認め、更に324年彼が帝国empireの独裁者dictatorとなると、キリスト教Christianityは名実ともに全帝国entire empireの公認宗教official religionとなった。

The emperor first issued the Edict of Milan in 313, allowing freedom of Christianity, and in 324, when he became the dictator of the empire, Christianity became the official religion of the entire empire.

ところが教会内部within the churchに神学上theologicalの論争controversyがあり混乱confusionしていたので、コンスタンティヌス帝Emperor Constantineは325年小アジアAsia Minorのニケーア公会議the Council of Nicaeaを開いて、教義doctrineの統一unifyを図った。

However, due to the confusion within the church due to theological controversy, the emperor convened the Council of Nicaea in Asia Minor in 325 to unify the doctrine.

この会議this conferenceで、キリストJesus Christの神性divinityを否定deniedするアリウスArius(256年~336年)が異端hereticとされ、「父なる神God the Fatherと子なるキリストChrist the Son」を同質the sameとするアタナシウスAthanasius(298年~373年)の説viewが正統orthodoxと認められた。

At this conference, Arius, who denied the divinity of Christ, was regarded as a heretic, and Athanasius' view that "God the Father and Christ the Son" were the same was recognized as orthodox.

The tradition of the emperor making decisions about orthodoxy or heresy was later inherited and called imperial papacy.

三位一体説 the Doctrine of the Trinity

After that, the apostate Emperor Julian tried to revive classical culture and paganism, and temporarily persecuted Christianity, but was unsuccessful.

Theodosius the Great

テオドシウス1世Theodosius I(在位379年~395年)は、380年、帝国the empireの全住民all the inhabitantsに対して正統のキリスト教orthodox Christianityを信仰するように命じ、続いて392年にはキリスト教Christianityをローマ帝国the Roman Empireの国教the state religionとし、他の神々の礼拝the worship of other godsを禁じた。

In 380, Theodosius I commanded all the inhabitants of the empire to adopt orthodox Christianity, and in 392 he made Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire, forbidding the worship of other gods.

5世紀 the 5th centuryにはエフェソス公会議the Council of Ephesus(431年)でキリストJesus Christの神性divinityを十分に認めていないネストリウス派Nestorianism(386年ごろ~451年ごろ)が異端heresyとされ、ペルシアPersiaを経て中国Chinaに伝わり景教(けいきょう)Jingjiao(Christian Church of the East)と呼ばれた。

In the 5th century, the Council of Ephesus (431) declared Nestorianism, which did not fully recognize the divinity of Christ, to be a heresy, and it was transmitted to China via Persia and called Keikyo.

And contrary to Jesus teaching that the rich are the most difficult to enter heaven, now the church itself has become a large landowner and has become rich, and has come to affirm class and the difference between rich and poor.

反面、教会the churchはギリシア文化Greek cultureの維持者the custodianとなり、キリスト教Christianityは新しい社会the new societyの人々の心the minds of the peopleを支配dominateするに至った。

On the contrary, the church became the custodian of Greek culture, and Christianity came to dominate the minds of the people of the new society.

教会内部Within the churchにおいては、正統な教義orthodox doctrinesの確立establishに努めた学者scholars(教父Church Fathers)が現れ、特に 『神の国Kingdom of God』 ・ 『告白Confession』 などを著したアウグスティヌスAugustine(354年~430年)は、後世の思想later thoughtに大きな影響great influenceを及ぼした。
