On September 14, 1994 (Heisei 6), at age
20, he hit one hit in a game against the Nippon Ham Fighters (Tokyo
Dome), breaking the record for most hits in a season for the first
time in 44 years.
On September 20 of the same year, in a
game against the Chiba Lotte Marines (Green Stadium Kobe), he became the first player in Japanese professional baseball
history to hit 200 hits in a season.
最終的に安打数も210本（当時の日本プロ野球記録、現球団記録）まで伸ばし、この活躍で安打数が話題となったため、連盟によって同年から 「最多安打」 が連盟表彰のタイトルとされた。
He eventually increased his hit count to 210 (a Japanese
professional baseball record at the time, and a current
club record), and because his success caused
such a stir that the league decided to
make "Most Hits" the title of the league award starting that same year.
打率では、日本プロ野球史上初の4割打者誕生はならなかったものの、最終的にはパシフィック・リーグ新記録となる打率 .385（2000年（平成12年）（26歳）に自ら記録を更新 .387）を残して首位打者を獲得。

1995年（平成7年）（21歳）の開幕前の1月17日に発生した阪神・淡路大震災において、本拠地の神戸市が壊滅的な被害を被り、イチロー自身も神戸市内にあるオリックスの寮で被災する。

The team's home base of Kobe suffered devastating
damage, and Ichiro himself was affected by the disaster while at the Orix dormitory in Kobe.

slam home run off Ikegami Kohichi in

1996年（平成8年）（22歳）8月にはプロ野球記録となる月間48安打（月間打率は .475）を記録した。
In August 1996 (Heisei 8) (at age 22),
he set a professional baseball record with 48 hits in a month (for a batting
average of .475).
最終的に3年連続となる首位打者を獲得し、また193安打で3年連続となる最多安打・最高出塁率を記録、前年に引き続き最多敬遠も記録した。

(Green Stadium Kobe) with the score tied at
6-6, in the 10th inning of extra innings, with one out and a runner on first
base, he hit a walk-off RBI double off Shimazaki Takeshi to clinch Orix's consecutive league championship, achieving
the "shoulder lift in Kobe" that
he had been unable to do the previous year when they won the league championship.

and Ichiro's record was reached in his 160th game, so there were some
doubts about it locally, but the record was highly

51, Ichiro received 99.7% of the votes (393
of 394), just one vote shy of a perfect vote, becoming the first Asian to be inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of
eligibility. In response, his former team, the Seattle
Mariners, announced on the same day that they would retire his uniform
number, 51, on August 9 of the same year.
