Unification of the Italian Peninsula

エトルリア人the Etruscansの支配dominationから独立independentした共和政ローマthe Republic of Romeは、エトルリア人the Etruscansを共同の敵common enemiesとするラテン諸都市the Latin citiesと同盟allianceを結びその盟主として、前4世紀末the end of the 4th century BCごろまでにエトルリア人the Etruscansをほぼ完全に征服almost completely conqueredした。

By the end of the 4th century BC, the Republic of Rome, independent of Etruscan domination, almost completely conquered the Etruscans by forming an alliance with the Latin cities, which had common enemies with the Etruscans.

前338年338 BCにはエトルリア人the Etruscansの脅威threatがなくなってローマRomeに反抗rebelledしたラテン都市同盟the League of Latin Citiesを解散dissolvedして、これらの諸都市these citiesを支配下に入れtook control of、続いてサムニウム人the Samnitesなど中部イタリアcentral Italyの諸民族other peoplesを平定other peoplesした(前343年343 BC~前290年290 BC)。

In 338 BC, when the threat of the Etruscans disappeared, he dissolved the League of Latin Cities, which had rebelled against Rome, took control of these cities, and then subjugated the Samnites and other peoples of central Italy (343 BC). to 290 BC).

These over 100 conquered cities were divided into self-governing cities, which were granted only partial autonomy and Roman citizenship (marriage and trade rights), and allied cities, which had autonomy but no Roman citizenship.

ローマRomeは一都市国家a city-stateとしてこれらの諸都市these citiesといずれも個別的な条約individual treatiesを結び、それぞれの待遇を異にしてtreated them differently団結unity・反抗rebellionを防ぎprevent、軍事military・外交diplomaticの宗主権suzeraintyを握って諸都市citiesを支配ruled overした。

As a city-state, Rome concluded individual treaties with each of these cities, treated them differently to prevent unity and rebellion, and ruled over them with military and diplomatic suzerainty.

アッピア街道 the Appian Way

に完成completedしたアッピア街道the Appian Wayを皮切りに、ローマRomeを中心としてcentering on軍用道路military roadsがしだいにイタリア全土throughout Italyに建設builtされ、要地key areasにはローマ直轄under the direct control of Romeの植民都市colonial citiesが置かれてローマ人the Romansが屯田兵soldiersとして移住emigratedし、ローマRomeのイタリアItaly支配rule overの中核centerとなった。

In addition, starting with the Via Appia completed in 312 B.C., military roads were gradually built throughout Italy centering on Rome, and colonial cities under the direct control of Rome were established in key areas, where Romans emigrated as soldiers. and became the center of Roman rule over Italy.

このような分離して統治divide-and-conquerする巧妙ingeniousな分割統治政策policy of separate ruleによって、ローマRomeはイタリア全土all of Italyにわたる支配権dominanceを確立establishedしたのである。

Through this ingenious divide-and-conquer policy of separate rule, Rome established its dominance over all of Italy.

ギリシア植民市the Greek coloniesの征服conqueringをへてイタリア半島the Italian peninsulaを統一unifyingしたローマRomeは、ギリシア市場the Greek marketを受け継いで西地中海the Western Mediterraneanへの進出advanced intoを図り、農業国agricultural countryから商業国commercial oneへの転換の態勢transformを固めつつあった。

After conquering the Greek colonies and unifying the Italian peninsula, Rome took over the Greek market and advanced into the Western Mediterranean, preparing to transform from an agricultural country to a commercial one.

一方、フェニキア人the Phoenicians(ラテン語LatinでポエニPoeni)の植民都市colonyカルタゴCarthageは、フェニキアPhoeniciaの衰退後after the declineも栄えprospered、特にギリシアGreeceの没落後after the fall ofは西地中海貿易Western Mediterranean tradeを独占monopolyして巨大な富と海軍力enormous wealth and naval powerをもち、スペインSpain・コルシカCorsica・サルデーニャSardinia・シチリアSicilyの一部parts ofを支配controlledしてイタリアItalyを封鎖blockadingする勢いにあった。

On the other hand, Carthage, a colony of the Phoenicians (Latin for Poeni), prospered even after the decline of Phoenicia, especially after the fall of Greece, and had a monopoly on Western Mediterranean trade, possessing enormous wealth and naval power. He was on the verge of occupying part of Sicily and blockading Italy.

He controlled parts of Spain, Corsica, Sardinia, and Sicily and was on the verge of blockading Italy.

このローマRomeとカルタゴCarthageの前後3回にわたる、地中海the Mediterraneanの覇権supremacyをかけた戦いthree battlesがポエニ戦争the Punic Wars(前264年264 BC~前146年146 BC)である。

The Punic Wars (264 BC-146 BC) were three battles for supremacy in the Mediterranean between Rome and Carthage.

First Punic War

First Punic War

戦争の発端the beginning of the warは、シチリア島Sicilyに生じたoccurred事件incidentに両者both sidesが出兵dispatched troopsして戦ったfightことにあるが、まずローマ海軍the Roman navyが奇策clever strategyによって勝ちwon、更に苦戦の末after a difficult battleにローマ側the Roman sideの勝利に終わったended in victory。

The beginning of the war was that both sides dispatched troops to fight an incident that occurred in Sicily, but the Roman navy won first by a clever strategy, and after a difficult battle, the Roman side ended in victory.

As a result, Rome acquired Sicily as its first overseas territory (province) and forced it to pay reparations.

Hannibal, the Carthaginian general, leads Spanish colonial troops across the Alps into Italy.

ハンニバルHannibalはカンネーの戦いthe Battle of Cannaeに大勝wonし(前216年216 B.C.)、一時ローマ市the city of Romeは危機に陥ったfell into crisisが、ローマの将the Roman generalスキピオScipio(前236年ごろ~前184年ごろ)がカルタゴCarthage本国を攻めattacked、前202年202 B.C. ザマの戦いthe Battle of Zamaに大勝wonした。

Hannibal won the Battle of Cannae in 216 B.C., and the city of Rome fell into crisis for a while, but the Roman general Scipio attacked Carthage and won the Battle of Zama in 202 B.C.

Rome completely deprived Carthage of its combat power, imposed a 50-year atonement, annexed the Carthaginian colony of Spain, and seized supremacy in the western Mediterranean.

Third Punic War

However, as Carthage quickly recovered its national power after that, Rome launched the Third Punic War and completely destroyed Carthage.

ポエニ戦争 the Punic Wars当時のローマRomeはすでに身分闘争the Conflict of the Ordersをへてまがりなりにも貴族the nobility(patricians)と平民the commoners(plebeians)が同等の権利equal rightsをもち、また市民兵制度militia systemが実現されていた(重装歩兵市民団heavy infantry citizen corps)のに対し、カルタゴCarthageは専制的despoticな大商人merchantの寡頭政治oligarchyのもとにあり、軍隊armyも外国人傭兵foreign mercenariesや被征服民conquered peoplesからなっていた。

At the time of the Punic Wars, Rome had already gone through a status struggle, giving equal rights to the nobility and commoners, and had a militia system (heavy infantry citizen corps), whereas Carthage was a despotic merchant. It was under an oligarchy, and its army consisted of foreign mercenaries and conquered peoples.

Therefore, this war, like the Persian War mentioned earlier, was a confrontation between freedom and despotism, between the West and the East, and can be understood as part of the conflict between the East and the West in world history.

With this victory, Rome gained Carthaginian territory in Sicily (about half of the island) and a huge indemnity.

Hannibal invaded Italy across the Alps, defeated the Roman army at the Battle of Cannae (216 B.C.) and elsewhere, and remained in Italy for 17 years, but the spirit of the Roman people remained undiminished and the alliance within the peninsula continued. The majority of the cities did not defect from Rome.

The majority of allied cities within the peninsula also did not defect from Rome.

A Roman army under Scipio took the Iberian Peninsula into Roman hands (206 BC), then attacked Carthage itself, defeating Hannibal's hastily returned forces at the Battle of Zama in 202 BC.

After the war, Carthage developed agriculture and prospered by exporting wine and olive oil, posing a threat to large Roman landowners.

Occurrence of provinces

このような地中海世界Mediterranean worldの成立establishmentは、当然、農業国家agricultural nationであったローマRomeを貿易国家trading nationの方向に大きく転じさせるcaused a major shiftものであるが、この変化this changeは征服地統治rule of conquered landsにもはっきり見られる。

The establishment of such a Mediterranean world naturally caused a major shift in the direction of Rome, which had been an agricultural nation, toward a trading nation, and this change can be clearly seen in the rule of conquered lands.

イタリア半島the Italian peninsula統一unificationまでのローマRomeは、自治autonomyを前提とした同盟体制alliance systemで臨んでいたが、ポエニ戦争the Punic Wars以後の戦争the warsはすべてイタリア半島外outside the Italian peninsulaに領土を拡大expand the territoryする略奪戦争predatory warsであった。

Until the unification of the Italian peninsula, Rome faced an alliance system on the premise of autonomy, but all the wars after the Punic Wars were predatory wars to expand the territory outside the Italian peninsula.

Social transformation

地中海世界the Mediterranean worldの統一過程unification processは、同時にローマRomeが都市国家city-stateから領土国家territorial stateへと発展developmentする社会の変質過程social transformation processでもあった。

The unification process of the Mediterranean world was at the same time the social transformation process of Rome's development from a city-state to a territorial state.

It appeared in the following form.

Development of latifundia

征服戦争the war of conquestによって増大した国有地state-owned landは、再びリキニウス法the Licinius Lawを無視ignoredした地主landowners・貴族noblesによって独占monopolizedされ、彼らは征服戦争the war of conquestによって流入した多数の捕虜奴隷captive slavesを使役して、牧畜経営livestock managementやオリーブolives・葡萄grapesなどの果樹栽培the cultivation of fruit treesを主とする大土地経営large land management(ラティフンディアlatifundia)を始めた。

The state-owned land increased by the war of conquest was once again monopolized by landowners and nobles who ignored the Licinius Law, and they used many captive slaves who flowed in from the war of conquest, and mainly engaged in livestock management and the cultivation of fruit trees such as olives and grapes. He started a large land management (latifundia).

大土地経営large land management(ラティフンディアlatifundia)

Its products and processed goods were exported to Italian cities and abroad, and cheap grain was imported from overseas provinces such as Sicily.

こうしてこの奴隷制大土地経営slavery of large land managementは、中小土地所有農民small and medium landowners(自由小農民free small farmers)の自己経営self-managementを圧迫puts pressureしてその没落declineを早め、彼らの土地their landは大土地所有者large landownersに兼併sharedされ、貧富の差the gap between rich and poorはますます大きくなった。

In this way, this slavery of large land management puts pressure on the self-management of small and medium landowners (free small farmers), hastening their decline, and their land is shared with large landowners, and the gap between rich and poor becomes ever greater.
