1898年の米西戦争Spanish-American Warのスペインの敗戦Spain's defeatでアメリカ合衆国の軍政下under United States military ruleに入り、1902年に独立gained independenceしたが、1934年まではプラット修正条項Platt Amendmentに基づき事実上アメリカの保護国American protectorateだった。
その後も親米政権バティスタ政権pro-American Batista regimeのもとアメリカの影響下にあったが、1959年のキューバ革命Cuban Revolutionでソビエト連邦Soviet Unionの影響下の社会主義国socialist countryに転換された。
政治体制political systemは、1961年に革命前に存在した全ての政党が解散させられ、新党結成も禁止されて以降、キューバ共産党Communist Party of Cubaによる一党独裁体制one-party dictatorshipが敷かれている。
革命を指導led the revolutionしたフィデル・カストロFidel Castroによる統治ruleが革命revolution以来2008年までの長期long periodにわたって続いた。
