駆逐艦陽炎(かげろう)Destroyer Kagero(heat haze)は、日本海軍Imperial Japanese Navyの陽炎型駆逐艦(かげろうがた・くちくかん)Kagero-class destroyers 1番艦Lead shipである。

The destroyer Kagero is the first Kagero-class destroyer of the Japanese Navy.

舞鶴海軍工廠(まいづる・かいぐん・こうしょう)Maizuru Naval Arsenalで建造build。

Built at Maizuru Naval Arsenal.

1941年(昭和16年)12月の真珠湾攻撃Attack on Pearl Harborを皮切りに、ラバウル攻略作戦Battle of Rabaul、セイロン沖海戦Indian Ocean raid、ミッドウェー海戦Battle of Midwayなど太平洋戦争Pacific War中の様々な作戦に参加。

Starting with the attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, it participated in various operations during the Pacific War, including the Rabaul invasion, the Battle of Ceylon, and the Battle of Midway.

特に1942年(昭和17年)11月のルンガ沖夜戦the night battle off Lungaでは駆逐艦陽炎(かげろう)Destroyer Kagero(heat haze)を含む8隻の駆逐艦eight destroyersで米US重巡洋艦ミネアポリスHeavy cruiser Minneapolis、ペンサコーラHeavy cruiser Pensacola、ニューオーリンズHeavy cruiser New Orleansを大破させ、その後、駆逐艦巻波(まきなみ)Destroyer Makinami(夕雲型駆逐艦Yugumo-class destroyer)とともに米US重巡洋艦ノーザンプトンHeavy cruiser Northamptonを撃沈するという大きな戦果を上げている。

豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiの死後After the death、豊臣政権(とよとみせいけん)は急速に崩れcollapsed rapidly、豊臣氏(とよとみし)the Toyotomi clanの勢力the powerは衰退declinedした。

政権の基礎the foundation of the governmentは不安定unstableであったばかりか、朝鮮出兵the dispatch of troops to Koreaによる恩顧(おんこ)の大名(だいみょう)beneficiary daimyoの対立confrontationと疲弊impoverishmentがこれに拍車acceleratedをかけた。

Not only was the foundation of the government unstable, but the confrontation and impoverishment of the beneficiary daimyo due to the dispatch of troops to Korea accelerated this.

しかも豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiの子son豊臣秀頼(とよとみ・ひでより)Toyotomi Hideyori(1593~1615)は、まだ幼かったのである。

関ヶ原の戦い(せきがはら・の・たたかい)Battle of Sekigahara後は摂津(せっつ)Settsu Province(大阪府Osaka Prefecture、兵庫県Hyōgo Prefecture)・河内(かわち)Kawachi Province(大阪府Osaka Prefecture東部)・和泉(いずみ)Izumi Province(大阪府(おおさかふ)Osaka Prefecture南西部)65万石の一大名one of the feudal lordsとなり、大坂の陣(おおさか・の・じん)Siege of Osakaに敗れてdefeated自殺committed suicideし、豊臣氏(とよとみし)the Toyotomi clanは滅亡endedした。

After the Battle of Sekigahara, he became one of the feudal lords of Settsu, Kawachi, and Izumi with 650,000 koku. .

淀殿(よど・どの)Yodo-dono


また、母mother淀殿(よど・どの)Yodo-donoは浅井長政(あざい・ながまさ)Azai Nagamasaの長女the eldest daughter茶々(ちゃちゃ)Chachaで、豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiの側室(そくしつ)Concubinage中もっとも勢威を持った。

Her mother, Yododono, was Chacha, the eldest daughter of Nagamasa Asai, and was the most influential concubine of Hideyoshi Toyotomi.

豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiの死後After the death、

豊臣秀頼(とよとみ・ひでより)Toyotomi Hideyoriを擁して大坂城(おおさか・じょう)Osaka Castleに拠(よ)り、落城the castle fellにあたって自殺committed suicide。

このような情勢のなかで、徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasu(1542~1616)が台頭rose to powerしてきた。

徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasuは三河(みかわ)Mikawa Province(愛知県(あいちけん)Aichi Prefecture東半部)の豪族a ruling familyであったが、織田信長(おだ・のぶなが)Oda Nobunagaと同盟allied withして東海地方the Tokai regionに勢力を伸ばしexpand his power、

豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiには臣従a vassalしたが、後北条氏(ごほうじょうし)the Gohojo clanのあとを受けて関東in the Kanto region約250万石を領有する最大の大名(だいみょう)the largest feudal lordであった。

また五大老(ごたいろう)Go-Tairō(Council of Five Elders)の筆頭the headであり、朝鮮にも出兵sending troops to Koreaすることもなく勢力を蓄えaccumulated power、豊臣秀吉(とよとみ・ひでよし)Toyotomi Hideyoshiなきあとの実力者an influential figureであった。

東軍(とうぐん)the Eastern armyには徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasuの家臣vassalsと、福島正則(ふくしま・まさのり)Fukushima Masanori(1561~1624)・黒田長政(くろだ・ながまさ)Kuroda Nagamasa(1568~1623)ら豊臣恩顧(とよとみ・おんこ)Toyotomi patronsの大名(だいみょう)Daimyoも加わっていた。

関ヶ原(せきがはら)Sekigahara

東軍(とうぐん)the Eastern armyの大名(だいみょう)daimyoへの恩賞rewardingとともに、外様大名(とざま・だいみょう)Tozama daimyōを辺地remote areaに移すなど大名配置the arrangement of the daimyoを整えた。

覇権(はけん)を確立established hegemonyした(いえやす)徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasuは、重要importantな都市cities・鉱山minesを直轄領under direct controlとし、さらに街道を整備improving highwaysするなど、統一unificationのための政策policiesを進めた。

そして1603年(慶長8年)、徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasuは征夷大将軍(せいい・たいしょうぐん)Sei-i Taishōgunとなり、名実ともにboth in name and reality天下の覇者the ruler of the worldとして江戸(えど)Edoに幕府(ばくふ)Shogunateを開いた。

1614年(慶長19年)大坂冬の陣(おおさか・ふゆ・の・じん)Osaka Fuyu no Jin(Winter Siege of Osaka)、翌1615年(元和1年)大坂夏の陣(おおさか・なつ・の・じん)Osaka Natsu no Jin(Summer Siege of Osaka)によって豊臣氏(とよとみし)the Toyotomi clanを滅ぼしたdestroyed。

In 1614 (Keicho 19), the Osaka Fuyu no Jin (Siege of Osaka) and in 1615 (Genna 1) the Osaka Summer Siege (Summer Siege of Osaka) destroyed the Toyotomi clan.

こうして戦国the Sengoku period以来の争乱the turmoilが終わり、2世紀半に渡る泰平の世a period of peaceが始まったが、これを世に元和偃武(げんな・えんぶ)Genna Enbuと呼んでいる。

偃武(えんぶ)Enbuは武器weaponを伏せてface down用いないnot to useと言う意味。

日光東照宮(にっこう・とうしょうぐう)Nikkō Tōshō-gū


徳川家康(とくがわ・いえやす)Tokugawa Ieyasuは翌1616年(元和(げんな)2年)死んだが、東照大権現(とうしょう・だいごんげん)Tosho Daigongenとして日光東照宮(にっこう・とうしょうぐう)Nikkō Tōshō-gūに祀(まつ)られた。

Ieyasu Tokugawa died in 1616, but was enshrined at Nikko Toshogu Shrine as Tosho Daigongen.


寛永文化(かんえい・ぶんか)Kanei culture


江戸初期の文化Early Edo culture

桃山文化(ももやま・ぶんか)the Momoyama cultureを継承inherited・発展developedさせるが、幕藩体制(ばくはん・たいせい)Bakuhan taiseiの確立期the establishment periodに見合ったmatches文化a cultureを伴うことになる。

The Momoyama culture (Momoyama Bunka) will be inherited and developed, but it will be accompanied by a culture that matches the establishment period of the shogunate system.


元禄文化(げんろく・ぶんか)Genroku culture


また京都上層町人Kyoto's upper-class townspeopleらによる独自の「寛永文化(かんえい・ぶんか)Kanei culture」とも言うべき性格をもち、元禄文化(げんろく・ぶんか)Genroku cultureの一要素an elementとなっていく。

江戸初期の学問Learning in the early Edo period

室町期in the Muromachi period、臨済宗(りんざいしゅう)Rinzai school禅僧Zen monksに学ばれてきた朱子学(しゅしがく)Shushigaku(Cheng–Zhu school)は、人間の感情を抑制suppresses human emotionsする道徳学moralityとしての性格と、名分論the theory of honorに基づき君臣関係を正しcorrecting the relationship between ruler and subject、身分秩序の重視emphasizing the order of statusを基本とする倫理的側面ethical aspectが為政者the rulersに受け入れられた。

Shushigaku, which was learned by Rinzai Zen monks in the Muromachi period, is based on the character of morality that suppresses human emotions, correcting the relationship between ruler and subject based on the theory of honor, and emphasizing the order of status. The ethical aspect was accepted by the rulers.

京都(きょうと)Kyoto相国寺(しょうこくじ)Shōkoku-jiの僧a monkであった藤原惺窩(ふじわら・せいか)Fujiwara Seika(1561~1619)は、還俗(げんぞく)returned to secular lifeして朱子学(しゅしがく)Shushigaku(Cheng–Zhu school)を禅宗(ぜんしゅう)Zen Buddhismから独立した学問an independent studyとした。

1616年(元和2年)、李参平(り・さんぺい)Yi Sam-pyeongが肥前(ひぜん)Hizen Province(佐賀県(さがけん)Saga Prefecture、長崎県Nagasaki Prefecture)有田(ありた)Arita(佐賀県有田町)の泉山(いずみやま)で白磁(はくじ)white porcelainの土clayを発見し、日本最初の磁器(じき)Porcelainを焼いて以来、有田(ありた)Arita周辺の窯(かま)kilnsは陶器(とうき)Potteryから磁器(じき)Porcelainに転じた。

In 1616, Risanpei discovered white porcelain clay on Mt. , the kilns around Arita switched from pottery to porcelain.

完成された金銀彩色gold and silver coloredの磁器(じき)Porcelain(有田焼(ありた・やき))はのちに伊万里焼(いまり・やき)Imari wareと称され、国内にとどまらず長崎Nagasakiから海外overseasに売り出されて欧州磁器European porcelainの模範modelとなった。

The completed gold and silver colored porcelain (Arita ware) was later called Imari ware, and was sold not only in Japan but also overseas from Nagasaki and became a model for European porcelain.


九谷焼(くたに・やき)Kutani ware


この技法は国内各地に伝えられ、加賀(かが)Kaga Province(石川県(いしかわけん)Ishikawa Prefecture南部)の彩磁(さいじ)colored porcelain九谷焼(くたに・やき)Kutani wareなどを生んだ。
