ギリシア人the Greeksを総称Generic termするヘレネスthe Hellenesの語源Etymologyとなった。

アイオロスAeolusとエナレテEnareteの息子son。
テッサリアThessalyのイオルコス市Iolcus（その地からイアソンJasonがアルゴ船the Argoに乗って出帆した）の創建者founderで初代の王The first king。
兄弟brother・サルモネウスSalmoneusの美しい娘Beautiful daughter、すなわち姪nieceのテュロTyroと結婚marriageした。
息子sonsの1人がのちにイアソンJasonの父fatherとなったアイソンAesonである。
アタマス Athamusと イノ Ino
アタマス Athamus
アイオロスAeolusとエナレテEnareteの息子son。
テッサリアの王King of Thessaly。
ボイオティア地方Boeotiaのオルコメノスの王King of OrchomenusとなりニンフnymphのネペレNephele（「雲cloud」）と結婚marriageし、プリクソスPhrixusとヘレHelleが生まれた。
やがてネペレNepheleと離婚divorceし、あるいはネペレNepheleに棄てられ、テバイ王King of Thebes・カドモスCadmus王妃Queen・ハルモニアHarmoniaの娘daughter・イノInoと再婚Remarriageした。
ネペレ Nephele プリクソス Phrixus ヘレ Helle
プリクソス Phrixus
プリクソスPhrixusとヘレHelleはオルコメノスの王King of Orchomenus・アタマスAthamusと、雲cloudのニンフnymphのネペレNephele（「雲cloud」）との子供childrenであった。
ネペレNepheleが去ったあとAfter leaving、アタマスAthamusはイノInoと再婚Remarriageしたが、イノInoは継子stepchild・プリクソスPhrixusをゼウスZeusに犠牲Sacrificeとして捧げるdedicateようにと命ずるOrderデルポイの神託the Delphic oracleがあったと偽ってFalse、それに夫husbandを従わせObeyようとした。
アタマスAthamusは息子sonを殺したくなかったdidn't want to kill。

プリクソス Phrixus ヘレ Helle
王Kingが息子sonの喉をかき切ろうcut his throatとしていると、そこに1頭の立派なfine牡羊ramが現れたAppeared。
ネペレNepheleが自分の子供を救おうとして送ったsent it to save her
childのだった。
牡羊ramは金色の毛golden woolをしていて、言葉を話すことができたable to speak the language。
黄金の毛をした牡羊the ram with golden woolはプリクソスPhrixusに自分の背にまたがるようにとTo straddle its back言いtell、イノInoが同じようにIn the same way疎ましくannoying思っていたthinking thatヘレHelleもプリクソスと同乗ride togetherした。
プリクソス Phrixusと ヘレ Helle
それから黄金の毛をした牡羊the ram with golden woolは空に舞い上がりSoared into the sky、遠くへ飛んで行ったand flew far away。
黄金の毛をした牡羊the ram with golden woolがヨーロッパEuropeとアジアAsiaを分かつDivide海の上を飛んでいたときWhen flying over
the sea、ヘレHelleは牡羊ramの背から海に落ちて死んだfell into the sea
from the back of an ram and died。
以来Since thenその海the seaをヘレの海Sea of Helleという意味でIn that senseヘレスポントスHellespont（現在presentのマルマラ海Sea of Marmara）と呼ぶcall。

黄金の毛をした牡羊the ram with golden woolはプリクソスPhrixusを東方へと運んで行きCarry to the east、ついにat last黒海the Black Seaの南東端Southeastern endにあるコルキスColchisのアイエテスAeetes王Kingの王国kingdomの都CapitalアイアAeaに来て着陸したCame and landed。
アイエテス Aeetes カルキオペ Chalciope プリクソス Phrixus
アイエテスAeetesはプリクソスPhrixusを歓待warm receptionし、娘daughter・カルキオペChalciopeと結婚marriageさせた。
プリクソスPhrixusは黄金の毛をした牡羊the ram with golden wool自身の、ないしは母mother・ネペレNepheleの指示に従ってFollow the
instructions、牡羊ramを犠牲SacrificeにしてゼウスZeusに捧げたDedicated。
金羊毛 （きんようもう） Golden Fleece
アイエテスAeetesは羊毛fleeceを剥いでPeel offアレスの森the holy grove of Aresに置きPut、火を吐く竜fire-breathing dragonに見張らせたWatched。
しかしHoweverアイエテスAeetesは自分が異邦人foreignerであるギリシア人the Greeksの手にかかって死ぬDie in the hands ofだろうという神託oracleを聞くhearと、プリクソスPhrixusを殺したKilled。
アイソンAeson
イオルコスの王King of Iolcus・クレテウスCretheusとテュロTyroの息子son。
イアソンJasonの父father。
プリクソスPhrixusの従兄弟Cousin。
イオルコスIolcusの王位throneを継ぐはずであったが、ポセイドンPoseidonとテュロTyroの息子sonのペリアスPeliasに王位throneを奪われた。
アイソンAesonはピュラコスPhylacusの娘daughter・アルキメデAlcimedeと結婚marriageした。
息子sonができたとき、2人はその子childが死んだと言って、実はひそかにケイロンChironに託して育てさせた。
メデイアMedeaはアイソンAesonを魔法Magicで若返らせたrejuvenates。
イアソンJasonが金色の羊の毛皮the
Golden Fleeceを取りに行っている間にWhile going to getアイソンAesonは死んだdied。
一説によればアイソンAesonはペリアスPeliasに毒poisonを飲まされたという。
その毒poisonは牡牛の血bull's bloodとされている。
メデイアMedeaがイオルコスIolcusに戻り、魔法MagicによってアイソンAesonを生き返らせたRevived。
ペリアスPelias
ペリアスPeliasとネレウスNeleusはポセイドンPoseidonとサルモネウスSalmoneusの娘daughter・テュロTyroとの双子twinsの息子sonsであった。
継母stepmother・シデロSideroの怒りを恐れたAfraid of angerテュロTyroは幼な子Little childrenたちを棄てたAbandoned。
ポセイドン Poseidon （ネプトゥヌス Neptune）
子供childrenたちは馬飼いherdsmenに発見され育てられたDiscovered and raised in。
ペリアスPeliasは牝馬Mareに蹴られたWas kickedときにできた青あざBlue bruise（ペリオス）から、その名をつけられたNamed。
成人した2人Two adultsは、母motherが誰であるのかを知ったthey knew who their mother was。
テュロTyroの方は2人を中に入れて棄てた籠からA basket that puts
them inside and throws them away、彼らが息子sonsであることを認知したAcknowledged that
they are sons。
ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
シデロSideroが継娘Stepdaughter・テュロTyroを虐待Abuseしたということを知ってペリアスPeliasは激怒rageし、ヘラHeraの聖壇templeに逃げ込んだ彼女を殺したKilled her who ran away to。
ヘラHeraはペリアスPeliasから受けたこの侮辱insultを決して忘れなかったshe never forgot this insult she received from。
そのうえ彼が再びヘラHeraに犠牲Sacrificeを捧げることを拒否したためBesides, he refused to sacrifice to Hera again、ヘラHeraの怒りはいよいよ増したHera’s anger has finally increased。
ポセイドンPoseidonと交わったあと、テュロTyroはイオルコス王King of Iolcus・クレテウスCretheusと結婚marriageし、彼との間に3人の息子sons・アイソンAeson、ペレスPheres、アミュタオンAmythaonを産んだ。
しかしペリアスPeliasは自分には王位throneの権利がないNo right to throneのに、クレテウスCretheusの息子sonとして王位throneにつく権利Right to the throneのある異父兄弟half brother・アイソンAesonからイオルコスIolcusの王位throneを奪ったRobbed。
アドメトス Admetus アルケスティス Alcestis ヘラクレス Heracles
ペリアスPeliasはビアスBiasの娘daughter・アナクシビアAnaxibiaを妻wifeとし、彼女は息子son・アカストスAcastusと、アルケスティスAlcestisら多くの娘daughterたちを産んだBirth。
しかし数年後、イアソンJasonは魔女witch・メデイアMedeaを妻wifeとして連れて、思いがけず戻って来た。
ペリアスPeliasを憎むヘラHeraの目的を達成したのはメデイアMedeaであった。
メデイアMedeaは、ペリアスPeliasの娘daughterたちが父fatherの若返りRejuvenationを得られると期待して、父fatherを細かく切り刻んでシチュー鍋に入れるように、彼女たちを騙したからであるBecause she tricked them into chopping their father into small
pieces and putting them in a stew pot。
アカストス Acastus
今やイアソンJasonはイオルコスIolcusを掌中におさめたが、ペリアスPelias殺しのために、彼と妻wifeはイオルコス市Iolcusを去り、ペリアスPeliasの息子son・アカストスAcastusが王位throneについた。
アカストスAcastusが父fatherのために催した葬礼競技the funeral gamesの中にはペレウスPeleusとアタランテAtalantaの格闘競技Wrestling
competitionも含まれていた。
イアソン Jason
テッサリアThessalyの英雄hero。
クレテウスCretheusの息子son・アイソンAesonとピュラコスPhylacusの娘daughter・アルキメデAlcimedeとの間に生まれたBorn between長男Eldest son。
アイソンAesonはマグネシア地方Magnesiaイオルコスの王King of Iolcusとなるはずであったsupposed
to beが、父father・クレテウスCretheusの亡きあとAfter the death of、ポセイドンPoseidonとテュロTyroとの間に生まれたBorn between異父兄half brother・ペリアスPeliasに王位throneを奪われDeprived of、イオルコスIolcusの一市民as a citizenになり下がっていたreduced to。
ケイロン Chiron
しかしHowever、いずれの説においてもin Either theory、イアソンJasonの母mother・アルキメデAlcimedeはペリアスPeliasを信頼せずdistrust、ケンタウロス族the centaursの賢者Philosopher・ケイロンChironの住むlive洞窟caveへ幼いvery youngイアソンJasonを送りsent、その養育を任せたentrusted the care。
ケイロンChironとケイロンChironの母mother・ピリュラPhilyraは、イアソンJason以外にも多くの子弟Childを預かり育てたと思われるIt seems that he took care of and raised many other children。
金羊毛 （きんようもう） Golden Fleece
イアソンJasonがのちにLater金羊毛 （きんようもう） Golden Fleeceを取りに行く遠征隊Expeditionを組んだときWhen Jason formed an expedition
team Expedition to go get、ケイロンChironのところで一緒に学んだかつての友人たちが数多く参加したMany
former friends who studied together at Chiron participatedのである。
「癒すものHealing person」の意味meaningと考えられるConsideredイアソンJasonという名Nameは、身に付けた多くの学芸武術arts and martial artsの中でもとりわけ医術medical artsを記念してAmong
the many arts and martial arts that he learned, especially in commemoration of
medical arts、恩師Mentor・ケイロンChironにつけてもらった名であるThis is the name given to Chiron。
ペリアスPeliasはイアソンJasonが生きていると知ってもEven if he know that Jason is alive、マグネシアMagnesiaのどこかで貧しく暮らしていることだろうと考えてthought he was living poor somewhere in Magnesia、警戒することはなかったwasn't wary。
ピュティア Pythia 巫女 priestess デルポイの神託 the Delphic oracle
ところがある日But one day、デルポイの神託the Delphic oracleによってBy、片方だけサンダルを履いたwith one sandalアイオロスAeolusの子孫descendantsに気をつけよbeware ofと告げられBe told、アイオロスAeolusの血を引くものを根絶するEradicate the blood of Aeolusことにした。
当然イアソンJasonもその対象である。 Of course Jason is also the target.
ペリアス Pelias

ペリオン山Mount Pelionからやって来る途中On the way from、水かさの増したwith
increased waterアナウロス川the River Anaurosを1人の老婆an old womanに頼まれて背に負って渡ったAn old woman asked him
to cross the river on his backイアソンJasonは、流れに片方のサンダルsandalをさらわれていたhad one sandal swept away by the streamが、その老婆old womanのことも忘れて先を急ぎForget about the old
woman and hurry ahead、それがthat isヘラ女神the
goddess Heraの神助divine graceのしるしとは夢にも思わなかったnever dreamed of a sign。
ヘラHeraは自分の祭儀religious ceremonyを怠るNeglectペリアスPeliasを憎みHate、イアソンJasonを試したあと彼を助けHelp him after trying Jason、ペリアスPeliasを滅ぼすことにしたDecided to destroy Peliasのである。
ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
他にもIn addition、ヘラHeraが自ら女神goddessの姿でイアソンJasonの前に現れ神助divine graceを明かしたHera appeared in front of Jason in the form
of a goddess and revealed divine graceとする説The theory thatがある。
ヘラHeraを背負って川Riverを渡って以来Ever since Jason crossed the
river with Hera on his back、女神goddessに肩入れされるsupportイアソンJasonは、サンダルsandalを片方だけ履いてwears only one sandal、市場marketの立つイオルコスIolcusの中央centerへ来るとWhen he come to the center of Iolcus
where the market is open、ペリアスPelias王Kingの館mansionへ行く道を聞いたheard
the way to the King's House。
イオルコスIolcusの王kingペリアスPeliasは、片方だけのサンダルで若いyoungイアソンJasonを認識し、寺院の階段に立ち寄ります。

サンダルを片方だけしか履かない者a man wearing one sandalの出現を家来retainerたちから知らされた王The king who was informed of his appearance by his
servantsは、その場に急行し、その若者the young manに名前や身分name and statusを尋ねたAsked。
イアソンJasonは尋ねられるまま率直にfrankly as asked、自分はhe isアイソンAesonの子childであり、自分こそhe is正統legitimacyな王位継承者Successor to the
throneであること、そしてその王位throneをただちに返還returnして欲しいAnd he
want him to return the throne immediatelyことなどを述べたsaid。
プリクソス Phrixus ヘレ Helle
ペリアスPeliasは悩んだworried。
祭儀religious ceremonyの最中に流血は許されない。
Bloodshed is not allowed during the
ritual.
また遠来の客は手厚くもてなさねばならない。

それに僭主tyrantである自分に反対しAnd
oppose him as a tyrant、アイソンAesonの子childに味方allyする者も多いはずであるMany should be on his side。
しかし、放っておけば、王位throneはおろか自分の生命も危ない。

theory、もし誰かがお前を殺しに来ると神託oracleに教えられたらIf someone tells him to come to kill you、お前はその男をどう処理するかwhat to do with the man、とイアソンJasonに質問Askすると、彼はアイエテスAeetesの王国Kingdomに黄金の羊の毛皮the Golden Fleeceを取りに行かせればsend and getいい、と答えたreplied

そこでペリアスPeliasはそのままその難題the challengeをイアソンJasonに押しつけたjust pushedという。

アルゴナウタイ the Argonauts
アルゴ船the Argoで金羊毛 （きんようもう） Golden Fleeceを求める遠征expeditionに出かけた英雄たちheroesのこと。
Heroes who went on an expedition to seek
the Golden Fleece by the Argo.
この冒険adventureについては多くの異説different viewがある。
There are many disagreements about this
adventure.
古くin old timesホメロスHomerの時代Era、そしてピンダロスPindarの時代Eraにもこの物語taleは知られていたThis story was known even inが、一番有名なのはThe most famous isヘレニズム時代the Hellenistic periodにロドス島Rhodesに住んだ詩人poet・アポロニオスApollonius
of Rhodesの『アルゴ船遠征物語The Argonautica』である。
さてWellデルポイの神託the Delphic oracleはイアソンJasonに好意的in favor ofで、この冒険adventureには成功successの見込みがあるThis
adventure has potential for successと宣したDeclared。
この冒険this adventureの間中throughoutヘラHeraはイアソンJasonを助けhelped、遠征the expeditionに参加するparticipate in多くの優れた若者many
talented young peopleを募るときもAlso
when recruiting many talented young people to participate in the expedition、ヘラHeraが力を貸したhelped。
ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
集まった英雄たちheroesは、古い物語では、テッサリアThessalyの若者たち（アポロニオスApolloniusは、北ボイオティアnorthern BoeotiaのオルコメノスOrchomenusにゆかりのあるミニュアス人Minyansという名でその若者たちのことを呼んでいる）となっているが、後代では、ヘラクレスHeraclesなどその他の国からも集まった英雄たちheroesも仲間に加えている。
乗組員CrewのリストについてはAbout the list of crew、どの国も自分たちの英雄heroを一行にto the line加えようとしてEvery country is trying to add their hero to the line、ギリシアGreece各地に伝わるthat have been passed down throughout Greece伝説the legendsごとにかなりの相違があるThere are considerable differences between the legends that have
been passed down throughout Greece。
オルペウス Orpheusと エウリュディケ Eurydice
一致しているのはin agreement with、楽士musician・オルペウスOrpheus、北風north wind・ボレアスBoreasの息子sonsで翼WingsのあるゼテスZetesとカライスCalaisの兄弟brothers、ペレウスPeleus、テラモンTelamon、ディオスクロイDioscuriとも呼ばれるカストルCastorとポリュデウケスPolydeucesの兄弟brothers、イダスIdas、万物を透視する超人的な視力を持ったリュンケウスLynceus、舵取りSteeringのティピュスTiphys、船大工shipwrightのアルゴスArgus、ペライPheraeのアドメトスAdmetus、アウゲイアスAugeasとペリクリュメノスPericlymenusなどである。
イアソン Jason
彼らはみな何らかの特技special ability、特質Characteristicsを持っていた。
They all had some feats, qualities.
なかでもAbove allイアソンJasonは女性の扱いがうまくtreats women well、彼のおかげでThanks
to himメデイアMedeaの心を捕らえcapture
her heart彼女を味方allyにmake her an allyできたable toことは遠征隊にとってfor the expedition決定的な力a decisive forceとなった。
ヘラクレス Heracles
モプソスMopsusの予言力Prophetic powerはキュベレCybele女神Goddessの怒りをなだめるto
soothe the wrath of the goddessのに役立ちhelps、ヘラクレスHeraclesの怪力Superhuman strengthはアルクトンネソス島（「熊島bear island」）に住むliving on巨人giantsたちからfrom the giants一行the partyを救ったsaved。
カライス Calaisとゼテス Zetes
北風north windの神god・ボレアスBoreasの双子twinsの息子sons
拳闘Boxingが得意なgood at boxingポリュデウケスPolydeucesはアミュコスAmycusを倒しbeat、カライスCalaisとゼテスZetesは空を飛んでflew in the skyハルピュイアイHarpiesを追い払ったdrove away。
アテナ Athena （ミネルウァ Minerva）
一行the partyの乗るアルゴ船the ArgoはアテナAthena女神Goddessの神助divine graceを得て、船大工shipwrightのアルゴスArgusが建造Buildした。
水切りの上の船首像Figurehead on the drainerは、ゼウスZeusの聖地sacred place・ドドナDodonaから言葉を話すSpeak the language樫の木Oak treeを伐り出して作られたMade by cutting down。
乗員Crewは全部で56名、うち54名がペアを組んでMake a pair櫓oarを漕いだpull an oar。
オルペウス Orpheusと エウリュディケ Eurydice
オルペウスOrpheusは舳（へさき）（船首）Bowに座って美しい歌声で荒れる海を鎮めSit on the bow and calm the rough sea with a beautiful singing
voice、ティピュスTiphysが舵steerをとったSteer。
アポロン Apollo
アポロンApolloとアテナAthenaが一行a partyの守護神Guardian deityとなり、出発のとき彼らはアポロンApolloに犠牲Sacrificeを捧げて航海voyageの無事Safeを祈ったAt the time of departure, they sacrificed to Apollo and prayed for
the safety of the voyage。
アカストス Acastus
ペリアスPeliasの息子son・アカストスAcastusが出発間際に一行the partyに加わったjoined the party on the verge of departure。
レムノス島 the
island of Lemnos
一行the partyは最初にレムノス島the island of Lemnosに立ち寄った。
The party first
stopped at the island of Lemnos.
アプロディテ Aphrodite （ウェヌス Venus）
アプロディテAphroditeは島islandの女womenたちを憎んでhated悪臭stenchを放つようにさせたmade them stinkので、女womenたちは夫husbandsに棄てられたAbandoned。
棄てられたAbandoned女womenたちは島islandじゅうの男male inhabitantsたちを皆殺しにしてkill to a man復讐revengeした。
そのため、島islandには長い間男male inhabitantsが1人もいなかった。
Therefore, there
was no man on the island for a long time.
ヒュプシピュレ女王 Queen Hypsipyle
そこで、寄港Port of callしたアルゴナウタイthe Argonautsは大歓迎Big welcomeを受け、
Therefore, the Argonauts were welcomed when they called at the port.
ヒュプシピュレHypsipyle女王queenはイアソンJason隊長Captainと恋に落ちた。
The Queen Hypsipyle fell in love with the Captain Jason.
ヘパイストス Hephaestus （ウルカヌス Vulcan）
ヘパイストスHephaestusのとりなしで女womenたちの体に染みついた悪臭stenchはアプロディテAphroditeによって取り去られていた。
With Hephaestus’ intercession, the
stench that permeated the women's bodies had been removed by Aphrodite.

一行the partyはヘレスポントス海峡the
Hellespont（ヘレの海Sea of Helle）、すなわち現在のpresentダーダネルス海峡the Dardanellesを渡りgo
across、プロポンティスthe Propontisすなわち現在のpresentマルマラ海the Sea of Marmaraへ入ったEntered。
そしてandアルクトンネソス島、すなわちThat is熊島bear islandに入港arrival in portしたが、そこはThere海峡Straitを隔ててAcross the straitアジア大陸the Asian Continentに接していたin
contact with。
キュジコス Cyzicus
ドリオニア人the Dolioniansの市cityキュジコスCyzicus（ミュシアMysiaの都市city）で王KingキュジコスCyzicusに歓迎welcomeされた。
6本の腕six armsを持つhave巨人giantsたちゲゲネイスGegeines
その間in the meantime 6本の腕six armsを持つhave巨人giantsたちゲゲネイスGegeines（「大地から生まれたものEarth-born men」）に留守の船shipを襲われたattacked by an absent shipが、船番ship guardとして1人残っていたThere was one
person left as a ship guardヘラクレスHeraclesが全員を殺し、それらの死体dead bodyを浜辺に山積みにしたkilled everyone
and piled up those corpses on the beach。
キュジコス王 King Cyzicus
一行the partyはキュジコスCyzicus王Kingからこの航海voyageの注意を受けて出航set sailしたDeparted
with the attention of this voyage。
しかし途中で嵐stormに遭い、逆巻く波に翻弄されて船shipはとある島islandに漂着drifting
ashoreした。
However, they encountered a storm on the
way, being tossed by the waves that wind in the opposite direction, the ship
was washed ashore on an island
一行the partyは船shipを浜に引き上げて野営Campした。
The party pulled the ship to the beach
and camped.
キュジコス Cyzicus
夜中に土地の住民に攻撃されて撃退したがThey were attacked
by the local residents in the middle of the night and repelled、朝になってin the morning、倒した敵the defeated enemyがアルゴナウタイArgonautsを海賊Pirateと間違えて襲ったattacked Argonauts by mistake
as piratesキュジコスCyzicus王Kingと部下Subordinateのドリオニア人Dolioniansだったことが分かったit turned out that he was king Cyzicus and his subordinates of
Dolionians。
一行the partyは出発した島islandに知らずに戻っていたのだ。
The party returned unknowingly to the
island where they left.
彼らはキュジコスCyzicus王Kingを手厚く葬りburiedその死を悼（いた）んだmourned。
They buried the king Cyzicus generously and mourned his death.
しかし王妃QueenのクレイテCliteは悲しみのあまり首をくくって死んだhung her
neck。
But the queen Clite hung her neck and died in sorrow.
キュベレCybele プリュギア（フリギア）Phrygiaの女神goddess
通常はゼウスZeusたちギリシア最大の神々の母the mother of the
gods・レアRheaと同一視され、レアRheaと同様に母なる大地the Earthを具現した。
嵐stormはなおやまず一行the partyは出発できなかったがThe storm is still bad, so that the party couldn't leave、予言Prophecyの能力abilityを持つモプソスMopsusがMopsus who has the ability of prophecy、ディンデュモン山Mount
Dindymonに住むプリュギア（フリギア）Phrygiaの女神goddess・キュベレCybeleの怒りを鎮めるとよいと教えてくれたtold them that they should calm the wrath of the goddess Cybele who lives in the Mount Dindymon。
男たちは山上の神殿templeに赴きMen go
to the temple on the mountain、神像Image of godのまわりで女神goddessの従者follower・コリュバンテスCorybantesのように武器を打ち鳴らしつつ踊ったDanced around the image
of god, beating weapons like a goddess's servant Corybantes。
ヘラクレスHeracles （ヘルクレスHercules）
ビテュニアBithynia沿岸CoastでヘラクレスHeraclesが自分の櫓oarを折ってしまったため、一行the partyはその地に上陸し村民に厚くもてなされた。
Because Heracles broke his oar on the Bithynia coast, the party landed there and
was treated with hospitality by the villagers.
ヘラクレスHeraclesが櫓oarを作っている間にWhile Heracles is making an oar、ヘラクレスHeraclesに愛されてloved by Heracles一緒に遠征地Expeditionについて来ていたfollowing the expedition together少年boy・ヒュラスHylasは泉に水を汲みに出かけたwent out to fetch water from the fountain。
ヒュラスHylas ドリュオプス人the Dryopiansの王KingテイオダマスTheiodamasとニンフnymphのメノディケMenodiceとの息子son。
ヘラクレスHeraclesがアルゴナウタイArgonautsに加わったときも、ヒュラスHylasを愛人として同行させた。
しかし、ヒュラスHylasのあまりの美しさに魅せられたHowever, Naiads were fascinated by his beauty泉の精たちNaiadsに水底に沈められてしまったHylas was sunk to the bottom of the water by
the spirits of the spring。
半狂乱になったbecame franticヘラクレスHeraclesは少年の名を呼びながら森を捜したが見つからないsearched the forest while calling the boy's name, but he could not
find it。
そのうちアルゴ船the Argoは2人を置いたまま出航set sailしてしまった。

ヒュラスHylasの叫び声Screamを聞いたheardポリュペモスPolyphemusもヘラクレスHeraclesと一緒にヒュラスHylasを捜していてやはり置き去りにされたがPolyphemus was looking for Hylas with Heracles
and was left behind、彼はそこに残ってやがてキオス市the city Ciusを創建したHe
remained there and eventually founded the Cius city。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはヒュラスHylasをあきらめずdoesn't give up、故国Homeland・ギリシアGreeceへ帰るときになってもEven when it comes
to returning to Greece、村民に続けてヒュラスHylasを捜査するよう命じて出発したDeparted by ordering the villagers to continue investigating Hylas。
アルゴ船the Argoの次の寄港先Port of callはNext port of call of the Argo、王KingアミュコスAmycusが、訪れる者すべてにボクシングBoxingの試合を挑んでは負かして殺すChallenge all who the king Amycus
visits to a boxing match, defeat and kill、というベブリュケス人the Bebryciansの国だったit was the Bebrycians country。
一行the partyはその話を聞いて怒った。

The Rape of the Daughters of Leucippus
ディオスクロイDioscuri 「ゼウスZeusの息子たち」の意。
カストルCastorとポリュデウケスPolydeucesは叔父Uncle・レウキッポスLeucippusの娘Daughtersたち、ポイベPhoebe、ヒラエイラHilaeiraとの結婚marriageを望んだ。
そしてAndボクサーboxerのポリュデウケスPolydeucesが、アミュコスAmycusの耳のうしろを殴りつけて頭を叩き割ったPolydeuces hit Amycus behind his ear and
smashed his head。
王Kingの無惨な死を見たベブリュケス人the BebryciansはThe Bebrycians saw the miserable death of the king、アルゴナウタイArgonautsに襲いかかったが、簡単に敗北したAttacked Argonauts, but easily
defeated。
ピネウス Phineus トラキアThraceの王king of
Thraceで予言者seer
次に立ち寄ったのはトラキアThraceの市・サルミュデッソスSalmydessusである。
The next stop was the Thrace city Salmydessus.
サルミュデッソスSalmydessusの浜でAt the beach in Salmydessus、予言の力を持つwith
the power of prophecyピネウスPhineus王Kingが、ゼウスZeusの人間たちへのひそかな企みを明かして罰せられBeing punished for revealing Zeus's secret plot to humans、怪鳥Phantom bird・ハルピュイアイHarpiesに苦しめられていたWas suffering from a monster bird Harpies。
ピネウスPhineusは盲目blindnessにされた挙句Phineus was blinded in the end、絶え間なく空を舞うthat constantly dances in the skyハルピュイアイHarpiesに食卓の食物を奪われ、汚物を落とされていたHarpies robbed food on the table and dropped
filth。
カライスCalaisとゼテスZetes
北風north windの神god・ボレアスBoreasの双子twinsの息子sons
ピネウスPhineusはアルゴ船the Argoの一行the partyを喜んで迎えPhineus gladly welcomes the party of the Argo、一行the partyの航海voyageの前途を予言prophesyする代わりにInstead of predicting the future of the party's voyage、一行the partyの中の翼Wingsを持つカライスCalaisとゼテスZetes兄弟brothersにハルピュイアイHarpiesを退治するよう願ったhe asked Calais and Zetes brothers, who have wings in the
party, to get rid of the Harpies。
食卓の用意が整うとWhen the table is
ready、上空にハルピュイアイHarpiesが現れHarpies appear in the sky、カライスCalaisとゼテスZetesは怪鳥Phantom birdたちをアカルナニアAcarnaniaまで追跡したCalais and Zetes chased the monster birds to Acarnania。

シュムプレガデスthe Symplegades（「打ち合う岩Clashing Rocks」）を無事通過すれば航海voyageは成功するだろうというthat the voyage will be successful if it passes through the Symplegades safely予言prophesyをピネウスPhineusから受けた一行the partyは、ボスポラス海峡the
Bosphorus straitへと船shipを進めたThe
party, who received the prophecy from Phineus,
proceeded the ship to the Bosphorus strait。
シュムプレガデスthe Symplegadesは、風が吹くとWhen the wind blows逆巻く波濤（はとう）に揺れてShaking in the reverse winding wave向き合う大きな岩Rocksが激しくぶつかり合いLarge rocks facing
each other violently collide、船shipを粉々に砕いてしまう恐怖の瀬戸straitであるstrait of fear that shatters the ship。
シュムプレガデス Symplegades （「打ち合う岩 Clashing Rocks」）
（ボスポラス海峡 Bosphorus strait）
海の上を足を濡らすことなく歩くことができるcan
walk on the sea without getting his feet wetポセイドンPoseidonの子・エウペモスEuphemusが、向き合う岩Rocksの間に鳩pigeonを1羽放ったshot a pigeon
between the rocks facing each other。
鳩pigeonが通るとき岩Rocksはぶつかり合ったThe rocks collided
as the pigeons passedが、鳩pigeonは尻尾を少し挟まれただけだったThe pigeon was just a little pinched in the tail。
アルゴ船the Argoの漕ぎ手oarsmanたちは、岩Rocksが離れるすきに、一気に櫓oarを漕いだ。
The rowers of the Argo rowed at once as the rocks left.
アテナ Athena （ミネルウァ Minerva）
岩Rocksは再び大波に揺れてぶつかり合ったThe rocks shook
again in the big waves and collidedが、自ら造船shipbuildingの指揮をとったTake
command of shipbuilding herselfアテナ女神the goddess Athenaがアルゴ船the Argoを見守り続け、波頭に船shipを乗せたためBecause the goddess
Athena kept watching the Argo and put the
ship on the wave front、船尾のオールoarの先が岩Rocksに触れただけで船shipは砕けずにすんだThe tip of the
stern oar just touched the rock and the ship did not break。
そしてその瀬戸straitの2つの岩Rocksは、以来動かなくなりAnd the two rocks
in the strait have since stuck、シュムプレガデスthe Symplegadesは船乗りSailorたちの恐怖の難所でなくなったthe Symplegades strait is no longer a horror for sailors。
残るコルキスColchisまでの航路sea routeは容易に進んだ。

the crew、自分で予知していた通りAs he had predicted、野猪a wild boarに突かれて死にDie after being struck by a wild boar、舵取りhelmsmanのティピュスTiphysも病死したTiphys who steers also died of illness。
そのためfor that reasonティピュスTiphysに代わってreplacingアンカイオスAncaeusが舵steerを取り、リュコスLycusの息子son・ダスキュロスDascylusが一行the partyに加わったJoined。

in 3人のテッサリア人the Thessaliansたちが、仲間にはいったJoined the group。
アルゴナウタイthe Argonautsはアマゾンthe Amazonsの女武者Female warriorたちを避けてAvoid、テミスキュラThemiscyraを通ったPassed
through。
ステュムパリデスの怪鳥 Stymphalian Birds
やがて一行the partyはアレス神の島Island of Aresと言われる伝説の島Legendary islandに着きEventually, the party arrives at the
legendary island called Ares Island、先が矢arrowに似た青銅bronzeの羽根Featherでよそ者を射つShoot a stranger with a bronze feather whose
tip resembles an arrow鳥birdの群れに襲われたattacked
by a flock of birdsが、楯Shieldで頭を覆い、騒々しい物音をたててこれを追い払ったcovered their head with a shield and made a loud noise to drive it
away。
アイエテス Aeetes カルキオペ Chalciope プリクソス Phrixus
ここでhere、コルキス王King of Colchis・アイエテスAeetesに父father・プリクソスPhrixusを殺されて逃げて来たwas
killed and ran awayプリクソスPhrixusの4人の息子sonsたちが、仲間に加わったfour
sons have joined the party。
4人の中のof the four長男Eldest son・アルゴスArgusが、目的地Destination・コルキスColchisで隊長Captain・イアソンJasonを待ち受ける苦難Hardshipの数々を語ったArgus talked about the hardships that await Jason。
アルゴ号の航路 （紫が往路outward journey、赤が帰路return journey）
アルゴナウタイthe Argonautsはパシス川the river Phasisを遡り、首都アイアAiaで錨をおろした。

ここでイアソンJasonはテラモンTelamonとアウゲイアスAugeasを連れてアイエテスAeetesの宮殿Palaceを訪れた。

叔母auntのキルケCirceに似て腕のいい魔女witchで、ヘカテHecateに心服していた

一行the partyを守るヘラHeraが霧fogをかけて3人の姿figureを消したがHera protects the party and the three disappeared
in the fog、アイエテスAeetesの2番目の娘daughterでヘカテHecateに仕える熟練の魔女witch・メデイアMedeaにすぐに見つけられたimmediately found by a skilled witch Medea who is second
daughter of Aeetes and serves Hecate。
アプロディテ Aphrodite （ウェヌス Venus）
しかし、ヘラHeraと一緒にアルゴナウタイthe Argonautsを守護するアプロディテAphroditeが魔力Magical powerを働かせたためHowever, because Aphrodite used
her magical power to protect the Argonauts with Hera、メデイアMedeaはイアソンJasonの姿Appearanceに一目惚れlove at first sightしてしまったMedea fell
in love with Appearance of Jason at first
sight。

foreign Greek men had come to take over his kingdom、しばらくは敵意hostile feelingsを表に出さなかったfor a while he hide his hostile feelings。
そして、遠征Questの目的は黄金の羊の毛皮the Golden Fleeceを取り戻すことのみというAnd the purpose of the expedition is only to get the Golden Fleece backイアソンJasonの言葉を信じるふりをしながらPretending to believe Jason's words、彼の勇気と力を試すためと偽りFalse to test his courage and power、1つの難題を持ち出したBrought up one
challenge。

daughter of Aeetes、イアソンJasonが命じられた仕事はメデイアMedeaに助けてもらうとよいと教えてくれたshe told him that Medea should help Jason with the work he was ordered to do。

next morning、アイアAia市壁の外側にあるヘカテHecateの神殿templeでat temple of Hecate outside the
Aia city walls、イアソンJasonとメデイアMedeaは密会したJason and Medea had a secret meeting。
イアソンJasonはメデイアMedeaをギリシアGreeceに連れて帰り結婚marriageすることを約束PromiseしJason
promises to take Medea back to Greece and get married、メデイアMedeaはイアソンJasonに魔法の薬草Magical herbを与えMedea gives Jason a

the magical herbs.
猛牛raging bullをくびきyokeにつなぎ、土地を耕しConnect the raging bull
to the yoke and cultivate the land、歩きながら竜の歯dragon's teethを播いたSowed
dragon's teeth while walking。
竜の歯dragon's teethを播いた大地から生まれた武装した兵士たちtribe
of armed men
たちまち大地から武装した兵士たちtribe of armed menが生まれイアソンJasonに襲いかかったがImmediately armed
soldiers were born from the earth and attacked Jason、イアソンJasonはひるまず彼らの真ん中にinto
their midst大きな石を投げたJason flirted and threw a big stone in the middle of them。
すると彼らは互いに殺し合いを始めthey fought each
other、日没の頃Around sunsetには全滅annihilationした。
Then they started killing each other and
were wiped out by sunset.
アイエテス Aeetes
ところが、アイエテスAeetesは約束Promiseを守らず、金羊毛（きんようもう）Golden Fleeceを渡そうとしない。
However, Aeetes does not keep his promise and refuses to give him golden fleece.
そればかりか、ギリシア人GreekであるイアソンJason一行the partyの力を恐れNot
only that, he fears the power of the Greek Jasons、一刻も早く彼らを殺そうとすることばかりを考えたAeetes just thought about trying to kill them
as soon as possible。

父father・アイエテスAeetesに自分がイアソンJasonを助けたことを知られたと思うメデイアMedeaはMedea thinks that her father
Aeetes knew she helped Jason、父fatherの館Palaceを出てアルゴ船the Argoを訪れたshe left her father's mansion and visited the Argo。
アルゴ船the Argoの一行the partyは、隊長Captain・イアソンJasonを囲み、無事に大仕事を終えた祝宴Feastを開いていた。
The party of Argo surround the captain Jason and were holding a feast that finished
their big work safely.
ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
メデイアMedeaが自分の不安anxietyと心配worryを打ち明けるとWhen Medea
confesses her anxiety and worries、イアソンJasonは恩人benefactor・メデイアMedeaを前に、彼女と結婚marriageすることを改めてヘラHera女神goddessにかけて誓ったJason vowed to the goddess again to marry her in front of
benefactor Medea。

メデイアMedeaは竜dragonが金羊毛（きんようもう）Golden Fleeceの不寝番sleepless vigilをしているアレスAresの森forestへイアソンJasonを案内しGuide Jason to the Forest of Ares、魔力Magical powerで竜dragonを眠らせPut the dragon to
sleep with magical power、イアソンJasonはそのとぐろを巻いてcoil itself眠る竜dragonの上に乗ってRiding on a
sleeping dragon金羊毛（きんようもう）Golden Fleeceを盗んだStealed
golden fleece。
2人が船shipへ戻ると、一行the partyは大急ぎでパシス川the river Phasisから出航set sailした。
When the two returned to the ship, the
party rushed out of the river Phasis.
アイエテス Aeetes
朝になって事の次第を知ったアイエテスAeetes王Kingは一行the
partyを追跡pursueさせた。
The king Aeetes, who knew what was going on in the morning, had him chase after the
party.

アルゴ船the Argoの帰路The return journeyについても幾つか異説different viewがある。

return route of the Argo ship.

ポセイドン Poseidonとアムピトリテ Amphitriteとトリトン Triton
アムピトリテAmphitriteが夫husband・ポセイドンPoseidonの戦車chariotの馬HorseをはずせばIf Amphitrite removes the horse
from her husband Poseidon's chariot、彼らを苦しんで産んでくれた母motherの恩に報いるreturn the favorことができるthey

time the Argo ship floated on the lake Tritonisアルゴ船the Argoをどちらに向けて漕いだら海Seaへ出るかが分からなかったthey didn't know
which way to go to the sea if they rowed the Argo ship。

タロスTalosの仕事は、クレタ島Creteの海岸island's
shoresを毎日3回three times daily走り回って、侵入者が現れたらそれを追い払うことだった
一行the partyはリビュアLibyaの海岸沿いにクレタ島Creteに着いたがThe party arrived on Crete along the Libyan coast、ミノスMinosから、1日に3回島islandを回りGo around the island three times a day、島islandを見張るWatch over the islandように命じられていたWas ordered by Minos青銅の男Bronze man・タロスTalosが、アルゴ船the Argoの英雄たちheroesに石stoneを投げつけてきたBronze man Talos threw a stone
to heroes of the Argo ship。
しかしメデイアMedeaが呪文をかけるとBut
when Medea casts a spell、タロスTalosの唯一の血管The only blood vesselから血bloodが流れ出ないようにDon't let blood
flow out of Talos’s only blood vessel踵heelのとこで止めてあった釘nailが抜けて、タロスTalosは死んだTalos died when the nail that had been
stopped at the heel came off。
テラ島 the island of Thera
エウペモスEuphemusがトリトンTritonから与えられた土の塊a clod of earthをクレタ島Creteの北の海northern seaへ投げると、テラ島the island of Theraが生まれた。
Throwing a mass of soil which Euphemus was given by Triton into the sea north of
Crete gave birth to the island of Thera.
その地の支配者になるというトリトンTritonのお告げが成就されるために、エウペモスEuphemusの子孫descendantsがテラ島the island of Theraに定住した。
To fulfill Triton's announcement to
become the ruler of the land, Euphemus’s
descendants settled on the island of Thera.
アポロン Apollo （アポロ Apollo） 太陽神god of the Sun and
light
アルテミスArtemisと双子twinsの弟younger brother
そのあと、一行the partyは濃い暗闇thick darknessに包まれた。

darkness.
イアソンJasonがアポロンApolloに祈ると、アポロンApolloは輝く炎の矢Shining flame arrowを放って船shipの近くを照らしてくれた。

アルゴナウタイthe Argonautsの一行the partyはイオルコスIolcusに帰る途中、アルゴ船the Argo難破の噂Rumors of wreckを信じたペリアスPeliasがアイソンAesonを殺したことを知った。
The Argonauts’
party is on their way back to Iolcus and knew that Pelias believed in rumors of
an Argo shipwreck and Killed Aeson.
ペリアスPeliasには王座throneを譲る意志がないhas no
intention of giving upと考えたイアソンJasonは、打つべき手What to doを仲間と相談Talk with friendsした。
Jason thought that Pelias has no intention of giving up the throne and
consulted with his colleagues about what to do.

in a kettle。

イアソンJasonは当然イオルコスの王King of Iolcusとなるはずだった。
Jason was supposed to be the king of Iolcus.
しかし、伝えられるところによると、イアソンJasonはそうしなかったという。

メデイアMedeaとともにメデイアMedeaの父father・アイエテスAeetesがかつて治めたことのあるコリントスCorinthの王位throneに就きWith Medea Jason takes the Corinth throne that Medea’s father

ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
これまで陰（いん）に陽（よう）に神助divine graceの手を差し伸べていたヘラHeraはHera who has been
reaching out to Jason with divine grace on
every occasion、ペリアスPeliasを罰するという目的を果たしたあとは、イアソンJasonを見捨てたAbandonedというAfter fulfilling the purpose of punishing Pelias, she abandoned Jason。
イアソンJasonはメデイアMedeaと一緒に10年間、コリントスCorinthで暮らした。
Jason lived in Corinth for ten years with the Medea.
そして3人の息子sonsたちを得た。 And got three sons.
クレオン王 King Creon グラウケ Glauce
10年の月日が経ったある日One day after ten years、クレオンCreon王Kingの娘daughter・グラウケGlauceとの結婚話the subject of marriageが持ち上がったthe

そこでイアソンJasonはメデイアMedeaと離婚divorceし、クレオンCreonはメデイアMedeaをコリントスCorinthから追放Expulsionした。

怒りと悲しみにIn anger and
