オデュッセウスはオイレウスの息子・アイアスがOileus' son
Aias、アテナ女神の像に保護を求めてすがっていたCassandra was clinging to the statue of
Goddess Athena for protectionカッサンドラをその像の目前で犯したと知るやWhen Odysseus learned that he had committed Cassandra in front of the
statue、アテナ女神の怒りをギリシア軍からそらそうとしてTrying to divert the goddess Athena's
wrath from the Greek army、アイアスを石で打ち殺すべきだと主張したOdysseus insisted
that Aias should be stoned to death。

from Troy to Chersonesus in Thrace.
その地で、夫・プリアモスの亡き後、今やオデュッセウスの奴隷となっていたヘカベはAfter the death of her husband Priam, Hecabe
was now a slave of Odysseus、息子・ポリュドロスがビストン人の王・ポリュメストルに殺されたことを知ったIn that place Hecabe learned
that her son Polydorus was killed by Polymestor
King of the Bistones。

それからイタケの家に帰ろうとしつつも、オデュッセウスはマレア岬沖で嵐に遭いWhile trying to return to Ithaca's
house, Odysseus encounter a storm off Cape
Malea、風に吹き流されて航路をはずれbeing blown
away by the wind and off the sea route、ロトスを食べる者たちの住む神話上の国に上陸したLanded in a mythical
country where the Lotus Eaters live。

オデュッセウスが率いた水兵の何人かがロトス（蓮）を味わいSome of the sailors
led by Odysseus taste Lotus、そのためすべてを忘れso forget everything、至福の忘却のうちにその果実を食べながらWhile eating the fruit in blissful oblivion、その地に永久に留まりたいとひたすら願ったthey just wished that they want to stay there forever。
それでオデュッセウスは、彼らを船まで無理やりに引き戻さねばならなかった。
So Odysseus had to force them back to the ship.
シシリア島 Sicily
次に彼は（のちにシシリア島とみなされたLater considered Sicily）巨人Giant・キュクロプスCyclops（単眼巨人）の島islandに到着した。
Then
he arrived at the island of Giant Cyclops.
ポリュペモス Polyphemus
そこで12人の部下SubordinateとともにポリュペモスPolyphemusの歓待Hospitalityを求めSo he asked for the hospitality of Polyphemus
with his twelve subordinates、自分の名はウティスοὔτις（「誰でもない」）だと語ったhe said his name
is nobody。
しかし巨人・ポリュペモスは彼らを洞穴に閉じ込めBut Giant
Polyphemus
traps them in a cave、入り口を巨石で塞ぎBlock the entrance
with a megalith、部下のうち6人を食べたate
six of his subordinates。

巨石を動かせず外に出られなかったオデュッセウスはOdysseus couldn't get out without moving the megalith、マロンの葡萄酒でポリュペモスPolyphemusを酔わせ眠りに落ち込ませるとWhen he intoxicate
Polyphemus with Maron's wine and let him
fall asleep、火で焼いた棍棒でポリュペモスの目を突いたpierced Polyphemus's
eyes with a fire-baked club。
ポリュペモスが「誰でもない」が自分を殺そうとしていると叫んだのでBecause Polyphemus
shouted that “nobody” was trying to
kill him、他のキュクロプスは誰も助けにこなかったNo other Cyclops came to help。

dawn、ポリュペモスは羊の群れを外に出そうと洞穴の入り口を開けたPolyphemus opened the entrance
to the cave to get the flock out of the cave。
そこでオデュッセウスと生き残っていた6人の部下は羊の腹の下にしがみついて逃げた。

船に戻り着くとオデュッセウスは自分の本当の名をポリュペモスに叫ばずにはいられなかった。

he get back to the ship, Odysseus couldn't help shouting his real name to Polyphemus.
これを聞いた巨人が巨石を投げつけたので、船はもう少しで沈むところだった。
When
he heard this, the Giant threw a boulder, so the ship was about to sink.
ポセイドン Poseidon
オデュッセウスが巨人の父親であるポセイドンの怒りを買ったのは、ポリュペモスをこのように盲にしたからである。
Because
Polyphemus
was blinded like this, Odysseus offended
father of Giant Poseidon.
アテナ Athena
だからアテナの助けがなかったならば、オデュッセウスはイタケには決して戻れなかったであろう。
So
without help of Athena, Odysseus would
never have returned to Ithaca.
事実、彼は何年もたってからようやく故郷に戻ったのでありIn fact, he only returned to his hometown after many years、しかもたった一人Moreover, just one person、他人の船に乗っての帰郷であったIt was a return
home on another person's ship。
アイオリア群島 （エオリア諸島） the Aeolian Islands
ポリュペモスから逃れたあとAfter escaping from Polyphemus、彼はまず風の神・アイオロスの島であるアイオリア（シシリア島Sicily北部のアイオリア群島the Aeolian
Islandsであろう）に着いたHe
first arrived at Aiolia, the island of the wind god Aeolus。

アイオロスはオデュッセウスを厚くもてなしAeolus treats Odysseus hospitably、やさしい西風・ゼピュロス以外のすべての風を皮袋に閉じ込めて彼に与えAll winds
except the gentle westerly wind Zephyr are trapped in a leather
bag and given to him、無事に故郷に帰れるようにしたmade it possible to return home safely。
アイオロス Aeolus
しかしオデュッセウスの水夫たちは袋には金が入っていると信じてBut the sailors
of Odysseus believe that the bag contains gold、オデュッセウスが寝ている間にそれを開けてしまったopened it while Odysseus was sleeping。
すると嵐が起き、彼らははるばるアイオリアまで吹き戻された。
Then
a storm broke out and they were blown
all the way back to Aiolia.
しかし今度は、オデュッセウスが神々に呪われていると気づかったアイオロスは、彼らを追い払った。
But
this time, Aeolus realized that Odysseus
was cursed by the gods and drove them away.
オデュッセウスOdysseusの部下を襲うライストリュゴン人the Laestrygoniansの族長Patriarch・アンティパテスAntiphatesと、その妻wife。
一行が次に目にした陸地は野蛮な人食い巨人・ライストリュゴン人の国であった。
The
party then Witnessed land where was the country of the
Laestrygonians, savage cannibal giants.
ライストリュゴン人はポセイドンの息子・ラモスという者が築いたテレピュロスと呼ばれる都市に住む。
The Laestrygonians live in a city
called Telepylus which built by Poseidon's son,
Lamus.

彼らの国は夜の短さと港にできた素晴らしい停泊所で有名だった。
Their
country was famous for its short nights and great moorings in the harbor.
オデュッセウスの艦隊が入港したときWhen the fleet
of Odysseus arrives at the port、ライストリュゴン人の族長・アンティパテスの娘が使節を族長に案内したがThe daughter
of Antiphates, patriarch of the Laestrygonians guided the envoy
to the patriarch、族長は使節の1人を食べてしまったPatriarch has eaten one of the envoys。

一行は逃げようとしたが一族全員に追跡され、船は沈められThe party tried to escape but tracked by the whole family and the ship is sunk、兵士たちはのたうちまわる魚のように槍で刺されSoldiers are stabbed with spears like fluttering fish運び去られて、一族に食べられてしまったwas carried away and eaten by the clan。
ただオデュッセウスの船だけは、彼が賢明にも港の入口に停泊しておいたので免れることができた。
Just
only ship of Odysseus was able to
escape because he was wisely moored at
the entrance of the harbor.
アイアイエ島 the
island of Aeaea
オデュッセウスはこの船で航海を続け、次にキルケ（「鷹hawk」）の住むアイアイエ島（イタリアItaly西海岸West
coastのキルケイイ島？）に着いた。

オデュッセウスがアイアイエ島に来たときWhen Odysseus came to the island of Aeaea、島を探検するために先発させた一行はthe party started to explore the island、危険を察したエウリュロコス（オデュッセウスOdysseusの姉妹sisterの夫husband）以外すべてキルケによって豚に変えられたEverybody except Eurylochus who sensed
the danger, turned into a pig by Circe。
オデュッセウス自身は、部下の救出に取り掛かろうとしたところをOdysseus himself was about to work on the Rescue of subordinatesヘルメスに押しとどめられBe held back by Hermes、彼からキルケの魔法を無効にする方法を授けられたHow to disable magic of Circe was bestowed from him。

ヘルメスはオデュッセウスに薬草・モーリュを与えHermes gave Odysseus herbs
Moly、キルケと寝る前にBefore going to bed with Circe自分に危害を加えないように厳粛な誓いを立てさせるように忠告したAdvised to make a solemn vow that don't hurt him。
オデュッセウスはキルケのもとで1年を過ごした。
Odysseus spent a year with Circe.
そのあと部下たちに説得されてオデュッセウスは再び航海を続けることにした。
After
that, he was persuaded by his subordinates,
Odysseus
decided to continue the voyage again.
ハデス Hadesとペルセポネ Persephone
彼はキルケの忠告と情報を得て最初にハデスの国（大洋オケアノスOceanusの端）まで行った。
He
first went to Hades' country with Circe’s
advice and information.
テイレシアス Tiresias
そこでは死者の亡霊がオデュッセウスに会いに来たりThere the ghosts
of the dead come to see Odysseus、預言者・テイレシアスの亡霊がGhost of the Prophet
Tiresiasどのようにしてオデュッセウスが帰国できるかを教えたりすることになっていたwas supposed to teach Odysseus how he could return home。
オデュッセウスは海岸に溝を掘り、神酒を供しOdysseus dug a ditch
on the beach and served sacred wine、それから牡羊と黒い牝の子羊を殺してThen kill the ram
and the black female lambハデスとペルセポネに捧げたDedicated
to Hades
and Persephone。
ペルセポネ Persephoneとデメテル Demeter
血が溝に流れ込むと亡霊たちがそれを飲もうと群がってきた。
When
blood flows into the ditch Ghosts
flock to drink it.
しかしオデュッセウスは、テイレシアスがそれを飲み、語り終えるまでBut Tiresias drinks it and until he
finishes talking、剣で彼らを寄せ付けなかったOdysseus kept them away with a sword。
アンティクレイア Anticlea
アイアイエ島で不慮の死に会いMeet an accidental death on the island of Aeaea、埋葬されないまま放っておかれたLeft unburied仲間のエルペノルの霊が現れたりHis fellow Elpenor spirits
appear、またオデュッセウスが長い間家をあけたため息子は死んだものと考えてshe also thought her son was dead because Odysseus had opened his house for a
long time、悲しみのうちに亡くなったDied
in sadnessオデュッセウスの母・アンティクレイアの亡霊が現れたりしたがThe ghost
of Odysseus’
mother Anticlea appeared、彼は断固としてそれらを近づけなかったHe resolutely kept them away。
そのあとテイレシアスが来て血を飲むとAfter that when Tiresias comes and drinks blood、オデュッセウスが必要とした忠告を与えてくれたGave Odysseus the advice he needed。

ghost of Tiresias依然として知力をそこなわずに保持していた唯一の霊であったIt was the only spirit
that still retained its intellect。

companions of Odysseus rob the cattle of Helios
すなわちトリナキエ島のヘリオスの牛には触れてはならないことThat is, do not touch cattle of Helios on the Thrinacia island、万一、触れればオデュッセウスの帰還はほとんど不可能になりShould he touch it, Odysseus’ return would be almost impossible、部下のすべてが殺されるだろうということであったIt was that all of his followers would be killed。
ペネロペ Penelope
テイレシアスはまたオデュッセウスの将来について他の予言も与えてくれTiresias also gives Odysseus other prophecies about his future、彼の家はペネロペに結婚を求める求婚者たちが占拠していると話したtalked that his house is occupied by suitors who
ask Penelope
to get married。
アンティクレイア Anticlea
それからオデュッセウスの母・アンティクレイアの霊がThen the spirit of Odysseus’
mother Anticlea、家がどのような事態になっているかについてさらに情報を与えてくれたGave him more
information about what's going on in his house。
そのあと、オデュッセウスはトロイアの仲間だった多くの英雄たちの亡霊と会話を交わしAfter that,
Odysseus has a conversation with ghosts of many
heroes who were members of Troy、また多くの美女の霊とも話しをしたalso talked to many beautiful spirits。
アガメムノン Agamemnon
アガメムノンは自分自身の恐るべき死に照らしてAgamemnon in the light of his own terrifying death、オデュッセウスが家に着いたあかつきにはWhen Odysseus got home非常に用心深くするべきだと忠告したadvised that he should be very cautious。
ヘラクレス Heracles （ヘルクレス Hercules）
それから最後にオデュッセウスはヘラクレスの亡霊に会った。

finally Odysseus
met his ghost of Heracles.
オデュッセウスOdysseus誘惑するキルケCirce Circe enticing Odysseus
死者の住家を離れるとオデュッセウスはアイアイエ島に戻りAfter leaving the house of the dead, Odysseus returns to the island of Aeaea、そこにエルペノルを埋葬し、キルケからさらに忠告を受けたBurial Elpenor there and received further
advice from Circe。
それから彼は故郷に向かって船出した。Then he set sail for his hometown.

and the Sirens
セイレネスの島が近づくとWhen the island
of Sirens approaches、オデュッセウスは彼女たちの歌声に部下を誘惑されまいとしてOdysseus didn't want his subordinates to be tempted
by their singing voice、部下の耳に蝋の栓をつめたFilled with a wax
plug to the ears of subordinates。
彼自身は歌声を聞いたがHe himself heard the singing voice、その前にまず自分をマストにくくりつけたbefore that, he first tied himself to the mast。
乗組員たちはオデュッセウスからあらかじめ与えられていた指示に従ってThe crew
followed the instructions given in
advance by Odysseus、歌声に魅了された彼が自分を解き放つようにと命じたときもEven when he was fascinated by her singing voice and ordered them to release
himself、さらにきつく縛って彼を誘惑から守ったthey tied it tighter and protected him from temptation。

彼はそれからスキュラとカリュブディス（のちにメッシナ海峡the Strait of Messinaに住むとされた）の間を通ったときWhen he then passed between Scylla and Charybdis、スキュラに近い方を行くことにしたdecided to go closer to Scylla。
そのため魔女・スキュラに船から6人の部下をさらわれた。
For
that reason, six subordinates was
kidnapped by witch Scylla
from the ship.
ヘリオス Helios （ソル Sol）
太陽神ヘリオスの住むトリナキエの島（のちにシシリアSicilyとみなされた）にくるとWhen he come to the island of Thrinacia
where Helios, the sun god lives、部下たちは錨を降ろすようオデュッセウスに迫ったsubordinates urged Odysseus to drop the anchor。
このため島に上陸した彼は、逆風により1か月も足止めされた。
For
this reason, he landed on the island and was stranded for a month due to
a headwind.
The
companions of Odysseus rob the cattle of Helios
オデュッセウスの命令にもかかわらず、部下たちは飢えのため貪欲になりDespite orders
of Odysseus,
his men became greedy because of hunger、オデュッセウスが眠っている間にヘリオスの牛を何頭か殺してしまったkilled some of Helios’ cattle while Odysseus was asleep。
肉のご馳走を6日に渡って楽しんだあとAfter enjoying Meat
feast for six days、彼らは順風に乗って出帆したThey set
sail on a smooth wind。
だが、島が視界から見えなくなるやBut as soon as the island disappears from view、彼らはヘリオスの頼みでゼウスが送った恐ろしい嵐に出会い遭難したThey were distressed by
the horrific storm Zeus sent at Helios’
request。
ただ肉を食べなかったオデュッセウスだけは生き残った。

スキュラ Scyllaとカリュブディス Charybdis

彼はマストと竜骨を結び合わせHe ties the mast
and keel together、漂流してカリュブディスまでやって来たがdrifted and came to Charybdis、そこで船がカリュブディスの渦巻きに呑み込まれてしまったThere the ship
was swallowed by the swirl of Charybdis。
しかし、彼は頭上の断崖からせり出している木にしがみつきBut he clings to a tree protruding from an
overhead cliff、船の残骸が浮かび上がってきたところでそれに飛びついて救われたWhen the wreckage
of the ship emerged, he jumped at it
and was saved。
それから彼はマストの円材にまたがってThen he straddles the mast circle 九日間漂いながら両手で漕いでいったrowed with both hands while drifting for nine
days。
カリュブディス Charybdis

そして、とうとう美しいオケアニスの1人カリュプソが住むオギュギアに打ち寄せられた。
Finally,
he was rushed to the island of Ogygia,
where Calypso, one of the beautiful Oceanis, lives.
カリュプソは彼と結婚し、不死身にしたいと思うほど彼を愛した。
Calypso married
him and loved him so much that she wanted to be immortal.
しかしオデュッセウスはカリュプソと7年間暮らしたBut Odysseus lived with Calypso for seven yearsあとは、故郷と妻を思って泣き暮らすようになったAfter that, he started crying thinking about his hometown
and his wife。

その涙が神々を動かしThe tears
move the gods、神々はヘルメスを遣わしThe gods
sent Hermes、カリュプソに命じてオデュッセウスがオギュギアを離れられるようCommand Calypso
so that Odysseus
can leave the island of Ogygia、いかだの作り方を彼に教えさそうとしたtried to teach him how to make a raft。
カリュプソがオデュッセウスを探すとWhen Calypso
looks for Odysseus、彼はいつものように寂しげに海を眺めていたHe was lonely looking at the sea as usual。

彼は初め、カリュプソに命じたという神々の命令を聞いてもEven when he first heard the orders of the gods to command Calypso、その言葉を信じようとせずDon't try to believe that word、彼女が自分を傷つけようとしているのではないことを誓わせてからAfter letting her swear she's not trying to
hurt him、いかだ作りにとりかかったhe started to make raft。
ポセイドン Poseidon
オデュッセウスを執拗に恨み続けるPoseidon continue to grudge Odysseus
relentlesslyポセイドンは、幸いエティオピア人the Ethiopiansのところへ出かけて留守だったFortunately, Poseidon
went out to the Etiopians and was away。
アテナ Athena
そのためアテナ女神に守られるオデュッセウスは無事に航海を続けることができた。
Therefore,
protected by the goddess Athena, Odysseus
was able to continue his voyage safely.
しかし17日後にエティオピアから戻ったBut seventeen days later returned from Ethiopiaポセイドンは、激しい嵐を送り、オデュッセウスのいかだを転覆させたPoseidon sent a fierce
storm to capsize Odysseus’ raft。
嵐で漂流するオデュッセウス Odysseusを助けるレウコテア Leucothea （イノ Ino）
そのとき海の女神・レウコテア（イノIno）が鴎（かもめ）の姿で彼のところにやって来てAt that time, the sea goddess Leucothea
came to him in the form of a seagull、死に物狂いで泳ぐようにと忠告したAdvised to swim frantic to death。
女神はまた溺れないようにと、身体を包むベールをくれた。
The
goddess gave him a veil to wrap his body so that he wouldn't drown again.
オデュッセウス Odysseusとナウシカア Nausicaa
彼は2日間大波の中を泳ぎHe swims in the rogue waves for two days、アテナが波を鎮めたときWhen Athena calm down the waves、やっとパイアケス人の住むスケリア島に打ち寄せられたFinally, he was rushed to the island of Scheria, where the Phaeacians live。
すでにレウコテア（イノIno）から教えられていたようにAs already taught by Leucothea、彼は顔をそむけてベールを水の中へと投げ返しHe turned away and threw the veil back into the water、藪の中で横になって体を休めたlay down in the bush
and rested。
ナウシカア Nausicaa
パイアケス人の王・アルキノオスの娘・ナウシカアに発見された。
Discovered
by Nausicaa, daughter of Alcinous, king of the
Phaeacians.
彼女は王宮で使われていたリンネルを洗濯しにShe washes
the linen used in the royal palace、侍女たちと川にやって来たのであるcame to the river
with the Handmaidens。
彼女たちがボール遊びをしているときにWhen they are playing
ball、オデュッセウスはその裸身を木の枝で隠し、藪から這い出てきてOdysseus hides his naked
body with a tree branch and crawls
out of the bush、言葉巧みに助けを乞うた。
王女はオデュッセウスに服を貸し与え、父王の宮殿に行く道を教えた。

taught him the way to the palace of her
father, king.
