1番目の難業 First Labor

ネメアのライオン Nemean Lion

まず最初にFirst of allエウリュステウスEurystheusから退治slayするように命じられたCommanded怪物monsterは、ネメアNemeaの谷valleyに住むライオンLionだった。

これは、月の女神Moon goddess・セレネSeleneが乳milkを与えた不死身Immortalの怪物Monsterで、オルトロスOrthrus（あるいはテュポンTyphon）とエキドナEchidnaを両親parentsとして生まれたbornと言われる。

ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）

この怪物monsterをアルゴリス地方ArgolisネメアNemeaに送り込んでSend inおいたのは、ヘラクレスHeraclesに危害を加えharmようとするヘラHeraである。

途中、ヘラクレスHeraclesはクレオナイCleonaeへ立ち寄り、モロルコスMolorchusという名の貧しい農民の小屋Poor peasant hutに1夜の宿を借りたput up for one night。

モロルコスMolorchusは客人に敬意を表しRespect the guest、所有する唯一の牡羊ramを捧げたいwant to dedicate the only ram he ownと申し出たOffered。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはそれを1か月待つWait for a monthように制し、次のように命じた。

ゼウス Zeus

自分はこれからネメアのライオン退治to slay the Nemean lionに出かけるが、もし1か月経ってもEven after a month戻らなかったDid not returnら、自分を英雄heroとみなしてその羊ramを捧げて欲しいI want you to offer a ram。

晴れて怪物monsterを退治slayして帰ったときはそれを救い主Savior・ゼウスZeusに捧げて欲しいI want you to offerと。

ネメアのライオン Nemean Lion

ある日の夕方One evening、山中でIn the mountains腹をいっぱいに満たしたsatisfy its appetiteライオンlionに出くわしたbump into、ヘラクレスHeraclesは待ち伏せしてAmbush矢arrowsを放ったrelease an arrow。

しかし、アポロンApolloから贈られたGiftedその矢arrowは、ライオンlionの脇腹に当たったhit its flankものの、すぐに跳ね返ってしまったbounced off immediately。

襲いかかるライオンlionを相手にAgainst the attacking lion、ヘラクレスHeraclesはオリーヴの枝Olive branchで作った棍棒clubをふるって闘った。

棍棒clubが折れたあとは素手でwith bare handsある。

ついに猛獣fierce animalを打ちのめし、息の根をとめ、全身の皮skinを剥いだpeeled the whole body。

獣Beastの鋭い爪clawsがナイフ代わりだSharp claws replace knives。

以後After that、ヘラクレスHeraclesはその毛皮skinを肩からかけて身にまといWear fur over his shoulders、常のUsual衣服clothesとした。

ゼウスZeusはヘラクレスHeraclesの武勲を記念してcommemorate the martial arts、このライオンlionを天空の星Stars in the sky（星座constellation）に加え、獅子座（ししざ） Leo （the Lion）とした。

ティリュンス Tyrins

英雄heroがクレオナイCleonaeに戻ったのは、なかなか帰らぬ英雄heroを死んだものと思い、モロルコスMolorchusが約束のappointed羊ramを犠牲Sacrificeにしようとするときだった。

ティリュンスTyrinsのエウリュステウスEurystheusのもとに着き、ライオンlionの毛皮skinを差し出すと、王Kingは毛皮skinの恐ろしさに震えあがりShivering in fear、地中に置かれたPlaced in the ground青銅の甕bronze winejarに隠れてhiddenしまった。

以後After that、ヘラクレスHeraclesが獲物Preyを退治slayして帰るreturnたびに、王Kingは直接それを見ることを恐れAfraid to see it directly、獲物Preyは町はずれoutside the city gatesに置くように命じて自分は甕winejarのなかに身を隠したHide himself。

そのためヘラクレスHeraclesの次にすべき仕事laborsの命令orderは、伝令使herald・コプレウスCopreusを通じて伝えられたCommunicated through。

2番目の難業 Second Labor

レルネのヒュドラ Lernean Hydra

次に退治slayする怪物monsterは、ネメアのライオンthe Nemean Lionと同じくエキドナEchidnaとテュポンTyphonの子供childで、アルゴスArgos近郊のレルネLerneの沼沢地帯swampアミュモネの泉the spring of Amymoneに住む水蛇water snakeだった。

胴体bodyは犬dogの体をし、頭headは5個から100個あるthere are 5 to 100 headsと言われIt is said that、後代の伝説ではIn later legends、そのうちの真中の1つOne in the middleは不死身Immortalとされた。

大きな蟹large crabの化け物monster

ヒュドラHydraをこの地に送り込んだSend inのも、もちろんヘラHeraの仕業Work ofであるが、今度はヘラクレスHeraclesの格闘の邪魔をして気を散らすDistract by disturbing the fightようにと大きな蟹large crabの化け物monsterも送り込まれてSend inいた。

イオラオス Iolaus

ヘラクレスHeraclesがヒュドラHydraの頭headを斬るdecapitateと、そこから新しく2つの頭headが生え出したsproutが、甥nephewのイオラオスIolausが手伝って、燃え木blazing firebrandでその付け根neck stumpsを焼き尽くしscorch、新しく頭headが生え出sproutないようにした。

最後に残った不死身の頭immortal headも斬り落としcut off、レルネLerneからエライオスElaiusへ通る道の地中に深く埋め大きな岩great rockをその上に置いた。

そのあと、蛇snakeの胴体bodyを裂き、胆汁bileの毒poisonを取り出し、それに自分の矢arrowsの先を浸して毒矢Poison arrowを作った。

（結果的には、この矢arrowsで英雄hero自身の破滅がもたらされることになる。）

ヘラクレスHeraclesが足で潰した例の蟹crabは、英雄heroを支援するアテナ女神the goddess Athenaに対抗したヘラHeraが、蟹crabの名誉をたたえようと天に迎え（星座constellation）、獅子座（ししざ） Leo （the Lion）の隣りに座を占める蟹座（かにざ） Cancer （the Crab）とした。

このレルネのヒュドラ退治destroy the Lernean Hydraは、他人の助けを借りて成し遂げたAchieved with the help of othersものでヘラクレスHeracles 1人の仕事ではないNot a single Labor、という理由reasonから、エウリュステウスEurystheusは難業Laborsの1つとして認めなかったDid not admit as one of。

3番目の獲物Preyは、生け捕りにしてエウリュステウスEurystheusのもとへ届けられたか、あるいは、殺されて差し出されたか、説が分かれる。

エウリピデスEuripidesによれば、その牝鹿hindは近隣を荒らす厄介物A nuisance that devastates the neighborhoodで、ヘラクレスHeraclesが退治slayしてアルテミス女神the goddess Artemisに捧げたという。

他の説では、ヘラクレスHeraclesに1年追い続けられ、疲れ切ったところを生け捕りにされたCaptured aliveという。

黄金の角golden antlersを持ち、アルテミス女神the goddess Artemisに属する神聖な獣sacred animalで、女神goddessの戦車Chariotを引く4頭のうちの1頭だった。

アルテミス Artemis

ピンダロスPindarによると、この牝鹿hindは、アルテミスArtemisがゼウスZeusから守ろうprotectとして姿を変えさせたtransformプレイアデスPleiadesの7人姉妹の1人One of the seven sisters・タユゲテTaygeteである。

この牝鹿hindを追って英雄heroは、ヒュペルボレイオイ人the Hyperboreansの住むlive極北の果てまで行ったwent to the end of the far northとピンダロスPindarは言う。

他の説ではIn other theories、牝鹿hindはアルゴリス地方Argolisのオイノネの森に住んでいたという。

タユゲテ Taygete

なぜケリュネイアの鹿the Ceryneian Hindと呼ばれるかは定かでないが、紀元前3世紀third century BCの詩人poetカリマコスCallimachusによれば、ヘラクレスHeraclesを試そうとするヘラHeraが1頭だけをケリュネイアKeryneiaの山中に放しておいたため、その名がついたという。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはこの牝鹿hindをアルカディア地方Arcadiaのラドン川the River Ladon近くまで追い、そこで鹿hindが眠っている隙を見てLook at the sleeping gap大きな網with large netで生け捕ったCaptured alive。

アポロン Apollo

獲物Preyを運んでいるときWhen carrying、アポロンApolloとアルテミスArtemisに出会ったMetが、2神Two godsは聖獣sacred animalを生け捕ったCaptured aliveことを責めblame、すぐにその場に放つよう命じたordered it to be released immediately。

しかし、捕獲captureはエウリュステウスEurystheusの命令orderであると説明するexplainと、女神goddessはそれをティリュンスTyrinsまで連れ帰るTake homeことを許したForgive。

エウリュステウスEurystheusに差し出されたあとAfter being presented、牝鹿hindは無傷のまま放たれたReleased unharmed。

4番目の難業 Fourth Labor

次はアルカディア地方Arcadiaエリュマントス山Mount Erymanthos中に住みlive、山から出て来てCome out of the mountainはプソピスの市に害を加えていたHad harmed the city巨大な野猪giant wild boarを生け捕るCatch alive仕事Laborだった。

ポロス Pholus

英雄heroはこの猪boarを探してlooking forポロエの市を通ったときWhen passing through the city、そこに住むliveケンタウロス族centaursのポロスPholusに歓待されたwarm reception。

しかし、それはポロスPholusにとっても仲間companionのケンタウロスたちcentaursにとっても不幸な結果Unfortunate resultになった。

ケンタウロス族 centaurs

ポロスPholusは強制されてForced酒壺jar of wineをあけたOpenedが、ふだん酒wineに飲み慣れないnot used to drinking alcohol他のケンタウロス族centaursが匂いsmellにつられてポロスの住むlive洞穴cavernに集まり、酔ってdrunkヘラクレスHeraclesと格闘Fightingになったのである。

この酒wineはケンタウロス族centaursの共有物common propertyで、ポロスPholusの一存でat his own discretion壺jar of wineをあけることは許されなかったwasn't allowed to open the jar。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはヒュドラHydraの胆汁bileに浸した毒矢poisonous arrowsを放って、多くのケンタウロスたちcentaursを殺害したKilled。

ケイロン Chiron

ケンタウロスたちcentaursはケイロンChironのいるマレア岬Cape Maleasまで逃げたran away。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはそこまで追いかけ、ケイロンChironの影に隠れてうずくまっているケンタウロスたちcentaursに対して矢を射たShot an arrowところ、エラトスElatusの腕を突き抜けてPenetrate his armケイロンChironの膝に刺さってStung in the kneeしまった。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはケイロンChironに彼から手渡された薬を塗ったapplied the medicine that he gave himが、ヒュドラHydraの毒は不治であったThe poison was incurableために治らずincurable、ケイロンChironは不死immortalのため苦しみから逃れることが出来ずcouldn't escape from suffering、プロメテウスPrometheusに不死性を譲ることで死んだDied by giving up immortality。

ポロス Pholus

ポロスPholusは戦闘のあとAfter the battle、矢をしげしげ眺めView the arrow、こんなに小さい物Such a small thingがよくケンタウロスthe centaursのように大きい生き物を殺せるものだと感心してImpressed that it can kill big creatures、ついそれを足の上に取り落としJust drop it on his foot、その毒のために死んだDied because of the poison。

縛られたプロメテウス Prometheus Bound

この殺戮を免れたEscaped this murderケンタウロス族centaursの1人が、のちにヘラクレスHeraclesに死をもたらすBring deathネッソスNessusである。

エリュマントスの猪 Erymanthian Boar

このあと、ヘラクレスHeraclesは猪boar退治exterminationにかかった。

彼は、猪boarのねぐらの外でOutside the roost大声で叫びつつScreaming out loud猪boarを追い出しdrive out、深い雪のなかに飛び出したJumped out into the deep snowところを網を投げて捕えたthrew a net and caught it。

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

肩に担いでCarry it on his shoulderエウリュステウスEurystheusの城へ持ち帰ったBrought back to the castleが、このときも王Kingはあわてふためいてget into a panic地中Undergroundの青銅の甕bronze winejarに隠れたhiddenという。

黄金の羊の毛皮the Golden Fleeceを求めてコルキスColchisへ遠征expeditionするイアソンJason一行partyにヘラクレスHeraclesが加わったjoined the partyのは、この時であるAt this time。

アウゲイアス Augeas

5番目の難業 Fifth Labor

アウゲイアスの家畜小屋 Augean Stables

太陽神Sun god・ヘリオスHeliosの息子son・アウゲイアスAugeasは、父fatherと同様、エリスElisの国に多数の家畜livestockを所有していたOwned。

しかし、家畜小屋Stablesはすでに長い年月for many years一度も掃除clean upをされたことがないhas never been cleanedため、糞dungが山積みしてPile of feces使用不可能unusableとなっていた。

ヘラクレスHeraclesの5番目の仕事the Fifth Laborは、その小屋Stablesを1日でin a day清掃clean upすることだった。

ピュレウス Phyleus

奴隷slaveの身であることを隠してHide that he is a slaveヘラクレスHeraclesはアウゲイアスAugeasと取り引きをしたMade a deal。

1日in a dayで掃除clean upをし終えるcarry outから、その代わりInstead、アウゲイアスAugeasの家畜livestockの10分の1 one-tenthを礼としてAs a thank you自分に与えよGive to himというものである。

証人attestorには、アウゲイアスAugeasの息子sonのピュレウスPhyleusがなった。

エリス Elis　アルペイオス川 river Alpheus

ペネウス川 river Peneus

ヘラクレスHeraclesはアルペイオス川rivers Alpheusとペネウス川Peneusを再ルーティングreroutingし、アウゲイアス厩舎Augean stablesをきれいにしたclean out。

ヘラクレスHeraclesは小屋Stablesの壁Wallに幾つかの穴holeをぶち抜きPunch out some holes、アルペイオス川the river Alpheusの流れflowをその穴holeから小屋Stablesのなかへ引いて、清掃clean upを終え、暗くならないうちに穴holeをすべて封じSeal all the holes before it gets dark、川の流れthe flow of the riverをもとに戻したRestored。

アウゲイアスの家畜小屋 Augean Stables

小屋Stablesはすっかりきれいになったcompletely cleanが、アウゲイアスAugeasは、その仕事taskがエウリュステウスEurystheusの命令orderによるものだと知りKnowing that it was due to an order、それを理由に約束を果たさなかったdidn't fulfill his promise for that reason。

父fatherの不実insincerityをなじったピュレウスPhyleusは国外へ追放されたExiled abroad。

ティリュンスTyrinsへの帰途on his way Tyrins、ヘラクレスHeraclesはオレノスOlenusの王King・デクサメノスDexamenusに歓待されたwelcomed。

返礼にIn return、ケンタウロス族centaursのエウリュティオンEurytionに結婚marriageをせがまれてbeing asked to get married困惑しているconfused because王Kingの娘daughter・ムネシマケMunesimacheのために、エウリュティオンEurytionを退治Get rid ofした。

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

ティリュンスTyrinsへ帰るとWhen he return to、ヘラクレスHeraclesは再び騙されたdeceived againことを知ったlearned that。

この仕事taskも報酬を求めて行ったDid for a rewardものであるから、難業Laborsの1つとは認められないNot recognized as one of the Labors、とエウリュステウスEurystheusが言い放ったSaidのである。

ピュレウス Phyleus

ヘラクレスHeraclesはのちにエリスElisの国countryを訪れ、さまざまな困難を経てAfter various difficulties、ついに国を征服Conquer the countryしてアウゲイアスAugeasを殺しKill、国を追放Exiledされていた王子princeのピュレウスPhyleusを戻して新しい王Kingとした。

6番目の難業 Sixth Labor

ステュムパリデスの怪鳥 Stymphalian Birds

ペロポネソス半島Peloponnese peninsulaでの難業Laborsはこの6番目の仕事the Sixth Laborが最後lastだった。

アルカディアArcadiaのステュムパロス湖Lake Stymphalus畔の森Forestに住みlive、先が青銅bronzeでできたThe tip was made of bronze翼Wingsをひろげて行き交う人々を襲いSpread their wings and attack people passing by、近隣の田畑を排泄物を落として荒らしているThe neighboring fields are being destroyed by dropping excrement猛禽Bird of prey退治exterminationである。

ステュムパリデスの怪鳥 Stymphalian Birds

アテナ女神the goddess AthenaがヘパイストスHephaestusに作らせた騒々しい鳴り物を使ってWith a noisy noise、ヘラクレスHeraclesはそれらの無数の鳥を一掃したsweep away countless birds。

ガラガラという物音に脅えThreatened by rattling noise隠れ場所から一斉に飛び立ったtook off all at once from the hiding placeところを、ヒュドラHydraの毒矢poisonous arrowsで射殺shoot to killしたのである。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはクレタ島の雄牛Cretan Bullを地面に押しつけてforces to the ground彼の難業laborsの一つを実行するperforming。

7番目の難業 Seventh Labor

クレタの牡牛 Cretan Bull

今度の仕事Laborははるかクレタ島Creteまで出かけなくてはならなかった。

クレタ島の王King of Crete・ミノスMinosがポセイドンPoseidonに捧げるべき牡牛Bullを惜しんだために、王妃QueenのパシパエPasiphaeがその牡牛Bullに欲情を抱いて交わった、といういわくある牛Bullを捕獲captureするためである。

ミノス Minos

その牡牛Bullは狂暴violentでもあったため困り切っていたin trouble because it was also violentミノス王King Minosは、ヘラクレスHeraclesの仕事Laborに積極的な協力こそしなかったがdidn't cooperate actively、邪魔だてはしなかったdidn't get in the way。

ヘラクレスHeraclesは牛Bullを生け捕りCatch alive、ティリュンスTyrinsへ連れ帰ったあとAfter taking it home、解放したreleased。

テセウス Theseus

放たれたreleased牛BullはマラトンMarathonへ行き、そこでのちにミノスMinosの息子sonでパロス島Parosの王King・アンドロゲオスAndrogeusを殺したkilled。

最後は、テセウスTheseusに捕えられて殺されたCaptured and killed。

トラキア Thrace　テッサリア Thessaly

8番目の難業 Eighth Labor

ディオメデスの雌馬 Mares of Diomedes

今度はトラキアThraceへ出かけた。

ビストン人the Bistonesの王King・ディオメデスDiomedesが飼っているkeep人間の肉を食う牝馬four man-eating Maresを捕えるcaptureためである。

ペライPheraeの王King・アドメトスAdmetusの歓待を受けReceive hospitality、王Kingの妻wife・アルケスティスAlcestisを救ったsavedのは、このトラキアThraceへ向かう途中On the way to、テッサリアThessalyを通ったときWhen passingのことである。

アドメトスAdmetus　アルケスティスAlcestis　ヘラクレスHeracles

死神 god of death・タナトス Thanatos

アルケスティスAlcestisは夫husbandの身代わりとなって死にdied on behalf of her husband、墓へ入ろうとしていたand was about to enter the graveが、ヘラクレスHeraclesは迎えにやって来たCame to pick her up死神god of death・タナトスThanatosと格闘して彼女を奪い返したWrestled with the god of death and regained herのだった。

トラキア Thrace

ディオメデス Diomedes

トラキアThraceへ入り、こっそり牝馬mareを盗みsteal、海路で帰途につこうGet home by seaとするとき、ディオメデスDiomedesに気付かれ、ビストン人the Bistonesに攻撃attackされた。

しかし、ヘラクレスHeraclesは彼らを撃退Repelし、王Kingを捕えcapture、人間の肉を食う牝馬four man-eating Maresたちの餌食preyとした。

荒馬mareたちは以後おとなしくなったbecame quiet after that。

アブデロス Abderus

だが馬mareの世話を任せていたtook care of it若い友人A young friend・アブデロスAbderusが馬mareに食われ犠牲となってしまったeaten and sacrificedために、英雄heroはその思い出にFor memories、アブデラの市Abderaを建設constructionした。

ディオメデスDiomedesの馬Horsesによって食われたアブデロス Abderus

牝馬mareたちはティリュンスTyrinsへ連れて行かれTaken away、エウリュステウスEurystheusの前にin front of差し出されたあとAfter being presented、放たれたReleased。

しかし、故郷hometownトラキアThraceを目指してAiming for北へとさまようWander north toうちに、オリュムポスOlympusと呼ばれる山中でIn the mountains野獣wild beastに襲われ、殺されたAttacked and killed by a beast。

（ヘラクレスHeraclesがアルゴナウタイthe Argonautsの遠征に加わったParticipated in the expeditionのは、この8番目の難業the Eighth Laborのときとする説もある。）

9番目の難業 Ninth Labor

ヒッポリュテの帯 Girdle of Hippolyte

珍しいものを欲しがるwant something unusualエウリュステウスEurystheusの娘daughter・アドメテAdmeteが、アマゾンたちthe Amazonsの女王Queen・ヒッポリュテの帯the Girdle of Hippolyteを願ったWishedため、ヘラクレスHeraclesは軍勢を率いてLead the army、彼女たちが住むlive小アジアAsia Minorの北岸North bank・テルモドン河畔the river Thermodonへ出発した。

テセウス Theseus

テラモン Telamon　アイアコスAeacusとエンデイスEndeisとの息子Son

テセウスTheseusとテラモンTelamonも仲間に加わったJoined a party。

一行a partyは途中on the way、キュクラデス諸島the Cyclades island groupのパロス島the island of Parosに立ち寄ったStopped in。

ミノス Minos

クレタ島CreteのミノスMinos王Kingの息子son・アンドロゲオスAndrogeusが王Kingとして君臨ReignするパロスParosの民peopleがヘラクレスHeraclesの兵を2人殺したKilled two soldiersので、ヘラクレスHeraclesはパロスParosの町を包囲Siege the townし、王Kingの2人の息子son・アルカイオスAlcaeusとステネロスSthenelusを人質にとったTaken hostage。

ミュシアMysiaではベブリュケス人the Bebryciansと戦うfightマリアンデュノス人the Mariandyniansの王King・リュコスLycusを助けたhelped。

（リュコスLycusはこの戦いで奪った地にIn the land stolen in this battle、英雄heroを記念してTo commemorate、ヘラクレイアポンティカの町を建設Build a townした。）

黒海 Black Sea

そのあと、アマゾンたちthe Amazonsの住むlive土地を目指してAiming for the land海路を進んだwent on the sea route。

アマゾンたちthe Amazonsは、当時のat the timeギリシア人the Greeksにとっては北方の未開の地Undeveloped land in the northカウカソスCaucasus、スキュティアScythia、トラキアThrace北方などの黒海沿岸Black Sea coastに住んでいた。

ヒッポリュテの帯 Girdle of Hippolyte

アレス Ares

ヒッポリュテの帯the Girdle of Hippolyteは彼女が父father・アレスAres神より一族の支配者のしるしとして受領したReceived as a sign of clan rulerものだったが、ヘラクレスHeraclesがそれを譲って欲しいと申し出るOffer to give it awayと、女王Queenは好意を示しShow favor、意外にあっさり譲り渡す約束をしてくれたSurprisingly, he promised to hand over。

ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）

しかし、英雄heroがそんなにも簡単に成功するsucceed so easilyことを怒ったAngry toヘラHeraは、アマゾン族the Amazonsの女に扮してDressed as a womanアマゾン族the Amazonsの先頭に立ちtake the lead、女王Queenが連れ去られると言ってSay to be taken away、ヘラクレス軍を襲ったAttacked the Heracles army。

アマゾンの戦い　Battle of the Amazons

女王QueenのヒッポリュテHippolyteが約束を破ったbroke her promiseと思ったthoughtヘラクレスHeraclesは女王Queenを殺しKill、帯Girdleを奪い取って出帆したtook the Girdle and set sail。

別の説ではaccording to another theory、ヘラクレスHeraclesとテセウスTheseusはそれぞれ、ヒッポリュテHippolyteに次ぐ権力者Next in powerであるメラニッペMelanippeとアンティオペAntiopeを捕えたCaughtという。

ヒッポリュテ Hippolyteとアンティオペ Antiope

その説ではIn that theory、メラニッペMelanippeは帯Girdleと交換にIn exchange for女王QueenヒッポリュテHippolyteのもとに返されReturned to、テセウスTheseusを愛するようになったCame to loveアンティオペAntiopeは彼のために国を捨てAbandon the country for him、テセウスTheseusとともにテセウスTheseusの国・アテナイAthensへ渡ったgo over toという。

ヘシオネ Hesione

帰途On the way home、ポセイドンPoseidonによって送られたSent海の怪物Sea monsterに国を荒らされてbecause the country has been devastated困っているin troubleトロイアの王King of Troy・ラオメドンLaomedonに力を貸したHelped。

かつてポセイドンPoseidonとアポロンApolloがトロイアTroyの城壁を建設Build the rampartsしたとき、ラオメドンLaomedonは約束Promisedの報酬Rewardを2神に支払わなかったDid not pay。

そのため神々に復讐されたSo revenge on the godsのである。

アテナ Athena （ミネルウァ Minerva）

ラオメドンLaomedonは要求されるままにAs requested、娘daughterのヘシオネHesioneを縛りbinding、海の怪物Sea monsterの餌食に供しようServe for preyとしているところだった。

ヘラクレスHeraclesは怪物monsterを退治exterminationしヘシオネHesioneを救うsave報酬Rewardとして、トロイアTroyがゼウスZeusから贈られたGifted名馬Famous horseを自分に与えるという約束Promise to giveをラオメドンLaomedonと結び、アテナ女神the goddess Athenaがヘラクレスのために海岸にしつらえた砦A fort set up on the coastのうしろからFrom behind怪物monsterを襲ったAttacked。

争ううちにWhile fighting英雄heroは怪物monsterの大きな口に飲まれたDrunk in a big mouthが、腹のなかからIn the belly怪物monsterを刺し殺したStabbed to death。

しかし、狡猾なラオメドンLaomedonは今度Againも言を左右にしてwith one excuse or another約束を守らなかったDid not keep promise。

ヘラクレスHeraclesは復讐を誓ったvowed revenge。

（一説によるとaccording to one account、この出来事This eventはヘラクレスHeraclesがアルゴ船the Argoの遠征から戻った時When returning from the expeditionのものである。）

トラキア Thrace

次は、トラキアThraceのアイノスAenusに立ち寄ったstopped by時whenのことである。

かつてポルテュスPoltys王Kingの歓待を受けたReceived hospitalityことがあったが、ヘラクレスHeraclesは王Kingの放埓Prodigalな兄弟brother・サルペドンSarpedonを殺したKilled。

さらにタソス島the island of Thasosでは、島を征服Conquer the islandし、それをパロス島the island of Parosを征服Conquerしたときに人質にとったTaken hostageアルカイオスAlcaeusとステネロスSthenelusに譲り渡したHanded over。

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

ティリュンスTyrinsのエウリュステウスEurystheus王Kingのもとへ到着し、アマゾンthe Amazonsの女王Queen・ヒッポリュテの帯the Girdle of Hippolyteを差し出したPresentedが、王KingはそれをアルゴスArgosのヘラHera女神Goddessの神殿templeに奉納Dedicatedした。

10番目の難業 Tenth Labor

ゲリュオンの牛 Cattle of Geryon

残る3つのThe remaining three難業Laborsを成すaccomplishために、ヘラクレスHeraclesはこの世の果てThe end of the world、さらにはあの世the Underworldへまでも出かけなくてはならなかったhad to go out。

ホメロスHomerは『オデュッセイアOdyssey』の中で、あの世the Underworldはこの世の西の果てThe West end of the world、オケアノスOceanusの流れの向こうに存在するExists beyond the flow ofと、言っている。

この旅のついでにIn the meantime of this trip、ヘラクレスHeraclesは多くの二次的な仕事Many secondary jobs（パレルガ）も行った。

ゲリュオンGeryon

クリュサオルChrysaorとカリロエCallirhoeの息子Son

三頭three heads、または三頭three heads三体three bodiesの怪物Monster

3つの頭three headsを持つ怪物Monster・ゲリュオンGeryon（本来はハデスHadesが姿を変えたものだったらしい）が所有Ownする多くの牛Cattleは、イベリアIberia（スペインSpain）の西westの沖合いに位置するLocated offshore神話上のmythical架空の島Fictitious island・エリュテイアErythea（「赤い島red island」、すなわち「太陽の沈む夕焼けの地The land of the setting sun」）で放牧grazingされていた。

それらの牛Cattleを盗みsteal、アルゴスArgosまで連れ帰るTake homeのが、10番目の仕事the Tenth Laborだった。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはリビュアLibya経由で西westへ向かったHeaded。

ヘリオス Helios

ヘリオス Helios

炎天Burningの砂漠desertの暑さに閉口したcan't bear this heat彼は、太陽神Sun god・ヘリオスHeliosに向かって弓を引き絞ったSqueezed the bow towards。

しかし、太陽神Sun god・ヘリオスHeliosは怒るどころかFar from getting angry、英雄heroの勇気に感嘆しAdmire courage、太陽Sunが西westに沈んだあとafter sinking毎晩Every nightオケアノスOceanusを渡って帰るときにwhen crossing home使うUsed黄金の大杯great golden cupを、彼に貸したLend to him。

英雄heroはその黄金の大杯great golden cupに乗ってRiding onオケアノスOceanusの流れを渡りCross the flow of、エリュテイアErytheaに着いたarrived。

ジブラルタル海峡 the Strait of Gibraltar

ヘラクレスの柱 Pillars of Hercules

途中on the way、ジブラルタル海峡the Strait of Gibraltarを渡るときにはWhen crossing、欧州EuropeとアフリカAfricaの山に向かい合って立つStand facing the mountain2本の「ヘラクレスの柱the Pillars of Hercules」を建てたBuilt。

オルトロス Orthrus

テュポンTyphonとエキドナEchidnaの息子Son

双頭の犬two-headed dogで、ゲリュオンの牛Geryon's cattleの番犬watchdog

エリュテイアErytheiaで、番犬watchdog・オルトロスOrthrusと牛飼いherdsmanのエウリュティオンEurytionを棍棒clubで打ち殺しbeat to death、牛Cattleたちを盗むstealと黄金の大杯great golden cupに乗せて帰路についたgot on the way home。

近くの牧草地でIn a nearby meadowハデスHadesの家畜番livestock guardをしていたメノイテスMenoetesが、騒ぎに気付きNotice the commotion、ゲリュオンGeryonに知らせたInformed。

ゲリュオン Geryon

怒ったAngry怪物Monster・ゲリュオンGeryonはヘラクレスHeraclesを追跡したTrackedが、アンテムスAnthemus河畔でヘラクレスHeraclesの毒矢poisonous arrowsに射られて死んだShot dead。

それから彼はタルテッソスTartessos（スペインSpain南西の都市、現在のどの地にあたるかは不明）に渡り、そこでヘリオスHelios神に黄金の大杯great golden cupを返却returnし、あとは歩いてスペインSpainを通り、南フランスSouthern Franceへ入った。

カクス Cacus

ゲリュオンの牛the Cattle of Geryonを連れたTakenヘラクレスHeraclesは、イタリアItalyを通って南下したGo south through。

のちにローマRomeが建国される地で休んでいるときWhen resting in the land where Rome was founded、その地を支配するDominate the landエウアンドロスEvander, Euandros王Kingの牛Cattleを盗んだstole怪物Monster・カクスCacusを退治exterminationし、王Kingに感謝されたThanked。

ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）

牛Cattleの群れを率いてLead a herd of Cattle、やっとティリュンスTyrinsに到着したと思った途端As soon as he thought he had finally arrived in Tiryns、ヘラHeraが虻（あぶ）gadflyを使ってWith牛Cattleを追い払ってしまったdriven it away。

方々に散った牛Cattleを集めることは一苦労だった。

It was hard to collect the Cattle scattered around.

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

エウリュステウスEurystheusはヘラクレスHeraclesを見て驚いたsurprised to see。

あまりに長い間不在だったためBecause he was absent for too long、すでにヘラクレスHeraclesは亡き者、と思っていたhe already thought Heracles was deadのである。

牛CattleはヘラHeraに捧げられたDedicated。

11番目の難業 Eleventh Labor

ヘスペリデスのリンゴ Apples of the Hesperides

デルポイの神託the Delphic oracleによってヘラクレスHeraclesの課せられた難業Laborsの数は10であったからBecause the number of difficult tasks imposed on him was 10、既に、すべてが成し遂げられたはずであったAlready everything should have been doneが、前述したようにAs previously mentioned、エウリュステウスEurystheusがそのうちの2つを正式な難業Laborsとして認めなかったためにBecause he didn't recognize two of them as formal hardships、さらに2つの途方もない難業Laborsがつけ加えられることになったTwo more tremendous challenges have been added。

まず最初はFirst of all、ヘスペリデスthe Hesperides（「夕べの娘Daughter of the evening」たち）が守るprotect黄金のりんごthe golden applesを持ち帰る仕事Work to take homeだった。

彼女たち（ヘスペリデスthe Hesperides）はティタン神族TitansのアトラスAtlasの娘daughterたちと言われることもあるSometimes said。

天球celestial sphereを支えるアトラスAtlas

アトラスAtlasが双肩shouldersに天空celestial sphereを支えsupport、彼女たちの園（ヘスペリデスの園the garden of the Hesperides）の近くに住んでいたからBecause he lived nearである。

その黄金のりんごthe golden applesは、ヘラHeraとゼウスZeusの結婚を祝ってCelebrating marriage祖母grandmother・ガイアGaea（大地the Earth）がヘラHeraに贈ったgift記念樹Memorial treeであり、この世の果ての庭gardenに植えられPlanted in the garden at the end of the world、ヘスペリスHesperis姉妹Sistersと、100の頭を持つ大蛇hundred-headed dragon・ラドンLadonが守っていたprotecting。

まず、その庭gardenを捜し出すことが容易でなかった。

First of all, it was not easy to find the garden.

ネレウス Nereus　海神 sea god

エリダノス川the river Eridanusのニンフたちnymphsに相談するConsultと、ネレウスNereusから情報を引き出すようにと教えてくれたTaught him to get information from Nereus。

ネレウスNereusは、誰かが捕えようとすると、自由自在に姿を変えるWhen someone tries to catch it, it changes its appearance freely海神sea godである。

ヘラクレスHeraclesが捕まえようとしたときも、あれこれ奇妙な姿に変化したWhen he tried to catch him, he turned into a strange figureが、うまくおだててflatter properlyやっと聞き出したfinally heard it。

庭gardenははるか遠いFar away西の果てWest endにあることが分かったTurned out to be in。

プロメテウス Prometheus

道中、様々な思いがけない事件に出くわした。

カウカソスCaucasusの岩山rockでは、縛られたboundプロメテウスPrometheusの肝臓liverを食い荒らしていたdevouring鷲eagleを殺しkill、プロメテウスPrometheusを自由freedにした。

エジプト王King of Egypt・ブシリスBusirisはヘラクレスHeraclesをゼウスZeusに犠牲sacrificeとして捧げようとしたtried to sacrificeが、反対にOn the contraryヘラクレスHeraclesは彼を殺したkilled him。

アンタイオス Antaeus

リビュアLibyaでは、ガイアGaea（大地the Earth）の息子sonで強者Strong manのアンタイオスAntaeusと格闘Fight withし、両手で彼を高々と持ち上げ、大地に投げつけて殺したHe lifted him high with both hands and threw him into the ground to kill him。

アレス Ares

アレスAresの息子son・リュカオンLycaonも戦いを挑んできたが、打ち負かしたHe also challenged the fight, but defeated it。

ロドス島 Rhodes

ロドス島Rhodesでは、牛追いCattle chaserから牛Cattleを1頭盗んでSteal犠牲sacrificeに供し、その肉を食べたSacrificed and ate the meat。

牛追いCattle chaserはただ立ち尽くして呪うcurseばかりだった。

The Cattle chaser just stood up and cursed.

ヘラクレスHeraclesに犠牲を捧げるsacrificeとき、呪いの言葉とともに行うwith cursed wordsロドス島Rhodesの習慣customsは、このとき以来のものと信じられているIt is believed to have been since this time。

アトラス Atlas

黄金のりんごgolden applesの手に入れ方についても2通りの説がある。

しかし、アトラスAtlasはヘラクレスHeraclesから天空celestial sphereを返されることを断りRefuse to be returned、自分がエウリュステウスEurystheusのところまで黄金のりんごthe golden applesを届けると言い出したhe said he would deliver the golden apple to Eurystheus。

ヘラクレスHeraclesは承知した振りをしpretended to be aware、天空celestial sphereを支えるSupport頭の上の円盤を整える間だけOnly while trimming the disk above his head、天空celestial sphereを持っていて欲しいと頼んだasked him to have celestial sphere。

アトラスAtlasに天空celestial sphereを渡したPassed瞬間The moment、ヘラクレスHeraclesは身をかわしdodges、黄金のりんごthe golden applesを掠め取ってgrabsそのままギリシアGreeceに向かってひた走ったjust ran towards Greece。

ラドン Ladonと ヘラクレス Heracles

空の大怪獣 ラドン Rodan　1956年（昭和31年）12月26日

エウリピデスEuripidesの知っていた伝説ではIn the legend he knew、ヘラクレス自身Heracles himselfが黄金のりんごgolden applesの樹の番をするkeep watch on the treeラドンLadonを殺しKill、樹からりんごapplesをもぎ取ったstripped an apple from a treeことになっている。

そして、渇きを覚えたfeel thirstyヘラクレスHeraclesが大地を蹴るkicked the groundと、そこから泉が湧き出したa spring sprang up from thereという。

（この泉springはのちにLater、アルゴナウタイthe Argonautsがこの地を通ったときpassed through this land、一行の喉を潤したmoistened the throat of the party。）

エオス Eos （アウロラ Aurora）　曙の女神goddess of the dawn

さらにIn addition、たまたま近くに居合わせたhappened to be nearbyエオスEosとティトノスTithonusとの息子son・エマティオンEmathionが、ヘラクレスHeraclesが黄金のりんごgolden applesを取ろうとするところを阻止しようとしたがtried to stop him from trying to take it、殺されたwas killed。

そして、ラドンLadonはヘラHeraによって天に招かれInvited to heaven竜座the Dragonの星Star （星座constellation）となったという神話mythもある。

アトラス Atlasとペルセウス Perseus

アトラス山脈 Atlas Mountains

この説This theoryは、アトラスAtlasは既にalreadyペルセウスPerseusにゴルゴンたちGorgonsのメドゥサMedusaの顔faceを見せられてShow him、大きな石の山a large pile of stones（モロッコMoroccoにあるアトラス山脈the Atlas Mountains）に変わってしまっていたit had turned intoという話とつじつまが合うIt makes sense with the story that。

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

エウリュステウスEurystheusは一旦once黄金のりんごgolden applesを受け取ったreceivedが、すぐにImmediatelyその場でon the spotヘラクレスHeraclesに返したreturned to him。

自分が持っているにはfor him to have、それらはあまりに神聖な果実Sacred fruitだったからであるBecause they were too sacred fruits。

ヘラクレスHeraclesからアテナ女神the goddess Athenaへ返されたReturned黄金のりんごgolden applesは、再びagainヘスペリデスの園garden of the Hesperidesへ戻ったwent back。

ケルベロス Cerberus

12番目の難業 Twelfth Labor

ケルベロス Cerberus

ヘラクレスHeraclesに課せられたassigned to（一般的な順序によるBy general order）最後の仕事The last Laborは、冥界UnderworldのハデスHadesの館の門Gate of the mansionを守るprotect番犬watchdog・ケルベロスCerberusを捕まえてくるCatchことだった。

今度こそThis time、永遠にforeverヘラクレスHeraclesを厄介払いすることができるcould get rid ofとエウリュステウスEurystheusは思ったthought。

ところがHowever、ヘラクレスHeraclesは堂々とproudlyハデスHadesを負かしdefeated、不死身Immortalの資格qualificationも手に入れたgotのである。

デメテル Demeter　（ケレス Ceres）

豊穣の女神goddess of the harvest and agriculture

ゼウスZeusの次姉Second elder sister

さてWell、それはまずit all冥界the Underworldへの道を見つけることwith finding a wayから始まったstarted。

そのためにfor that、エウモルポスEumolpusからエレウシスの秘教the Eleusinian mysteriesに入会を許されpermitted admission（異邦人alienはエレウシス教the Eleusinian mysteriesへの入会は許されなかったAdmission was not allowedために、彼はエレウシスEleusisの市民Citizen・ピュリオスPhylliusの養子adopted childとなった）、かつてOnceケンタウロス族centaursを大勢殺害したkilled many people罪の汚れdirt of the sinもalso浄められたPurified。

デメテルDemeterの始めたFoundedエレウシス秘教the Eleusinian mysteriesの秘儀secret ceremonyに守られてProtected、やっとat lastヘラクレスHeraclesは冥界the Underworldへ進むことができたable to proceed。

アドメトス Admetus　アルケスティス Alcestis　ヘラクレス Heracles

アドメトスAdmetusの身代わりにsacrifice herself死んだdeadアルケスティスAlcestisを救ったSavedのは、このときとする説もあるThere is also a theory that this is the case。

タイナロン岬 Cape Tainaron

ヘルメス Hermes

アテナ Athena （ミネルウァ Minerva）

ペロポネソス半島the Peloponnese peninsulaの南部southlandラコニアLaconiaのタイナロン岬Cape Tainaronで「死出の旅の案内人Guide to the journey of death」でもあるヘルメスHermesに会い、死者の国the Underworldへ先導Leadしてもらった。

ヘラクレスHeraclesを守護するProtectアテナAthenaも付き添ったAccompanied。

カロン Charon

ステュクス川Styxの渡し守りferryman・カロンCharonは、生きたヘラクレスHeraclesの姿を見て驚きsurprised to see him alive、あわててオールoarを漕ぎ向こう岸へ運んでくれたHe hurriedly rowed the oars and carried him to the other side。

（この軽率な行動に対する罰としてAs a punishment for this careless behavior、カロンCharonはハデスHadesによって1年の間鎖につながれたChained for a year。）

ハデス Hadesと ペルセポネ Persephone

なかなか入国entryを許してくれないDo not allowハデスHadesとは取っ組み合いになったgot into a fight withが、ハデスHadesは怪我をしてInjuredオリュムポスOlympusまでパイエオンPaeonの軟膏ointmentを取りに行くgo get始末dispositionだった。

ついにfinallyハデスHadesから許可がでたgot permission。

武器を持たずWithout a weapon、素手でWith bare handsケルベロスCerberusを捕えることができたらIf you can catch it、地上へ連れて帰ってよいYou can take it back to the ground、というのである。

テセウス Theseus

王妃QueenペルセポネPersephoneの略奪計画looting planが未遂に終わりlooting plan is over、忘却の椅子chairs of forgetfulnessに座らされているseatedテセウスTheseusとペイリトオスPirithousに出会ったmetのは、このときであるIt was at this time。

ペイリトオス Pirithous

ペイリトオスPirithousの計画に力を貸しただけでjust helping the plan首謀者mastermindではなかったテセウスTheseusは、ヘラクレスHeraclesとともにwith地上へ帰るreturn to the groundことが許されたallowed。

ペイリトオスPirithousは忘却の椅子chairs of forgetfulnessを離れることを許されなかったnot allowed to leave。

メレアグロスMeleager　オイネウスOeneusとアルタイアAlthaeaとの息子son

その他、ゴルゴンGorgon姉妹SistersのメドゥサMedusaやメレアグロスMeleagerの亡霊Ghostにも会った。

メドゥサMedusaの亡霊Ghostはもはやいかなる危害も加えることはないNo longer does any harmから恐れることはないDon't be afraid、とヘルメスHermesから教えられたTaught by。

デイアネイラ Deianira

メレアグロスMeleagerの亡霊Ghostは、自分が死に至るまでの経緯を綿々と物語ったtold the story of how he diedが、それに心動かされたmoved by itヘラクレスHeraclesは、彼の姉妹sisterのデイアネイラDeianiraの美しさbeautyを聞かされるHearと、地上へ帰ったらwhen he got back to the groundきっと彼女を妻wifeに迎えるto have her as his wifeと約束promisedして亡霊Ghostを慰めたComforted。

この約束はのちに果たされた。

This promise was later fulfilled.

デメテルDemeterによって、ミミズクHorned owlと化すアスカラポスAscalaphus

大きな岩big rockの下敷きにされていたwas under a big rockアスカラポスAscalaphusの亡霊Ghostも自由にしたFreed。

彼は、ペルセポネPersephoneはハデスHadesにさらわれてkidnapped冥界the Underworldへやって来たときWhen she comeざくろの実Pomegranateを食べたateことを暴露したExposedため、そのような罰を受けていたHad such a punishmentのである。

それから、亡霊Ghostたちに食べさせようとしてTrying to feed、ハデスHadesの牛Cattleを1頭殺したKilled one。

ハデス Hadesとペルセポネ Persephone

しかしHowever、ヘラクレスHeraclesは王妃QueenペルセポネPersephoneから、もうこれ以上Not any more冥界the Underworldの秩序orderを乱し荒らさないで欲しいI don't want you to disturb the order、さっさとquicklyケルベロスCerberusを連れてtake地上に戻るback to the groundようにと懇願されたwas begged。

ケルベロス Cerberus

そこでSoヘラクレスHeraclesはケルベロスCerberusを倒しdefeated、肩に担いでcarried on his shoulder地上へ帰ったreturned to the ground。

エウリュステウス王King Eurystheusの領土territoryティリュンスTyrinsへの道中On the way to、冥界the Underworldの番犬watchdog・ケルベロスCerberusの恐ろしい外見terrifying appearanceは、数多くの不幸の原因となったcaused many misfortunes。

トリカブト aconite （wolf's-bane）

猛毒virulent poisonを持つトリカブトaconite （wolf's-bane）の木treeが、ケルベロスCerberusの吐く唾spitから生え出たsproutのも、それらの不幸のうちの1つであるIs one of those misfortunes。

エウリュステウス Eurystheus

ヘラクレスHeraclesの生還Survivalの知らせを聞いたheard the newsエウリュステウスEurystheusは、ケルベロスCerberusが城へ着く前からBefore he arrived at the castle早々とEarly、いつもと同じようにAs usual地中のin the ground青銅の甕bronze winejarの中に身を隠したhid himself in。

ヘラクレスHeraclesはケルベロスCerberusを確かに連れ帰ったことをthat he did bring it back示すshowとすぐにAs soon as、ハデスHadesの承諾を得てWith his consentその恐ろしいthe terrifying怪獣monsterを元の場所にto its original location戻したreturned。
