Section Two

Ancient Greek world

While the Greeks absorbed advanced civilization, politically they formed a unique world divided into numerous polises and competing with each other.

He created the fundamental patterns of Western culture, such as the ideals of political freedom and justice, the love of knowledge and truth, and the model of beauty.

そのころペルシア人the Persiansが古代東方世界の全体the entire ancient eastern worldを統一unifiedし、更にギリシアGreeceへも侵入invadedしたが、自由freedomを尊重respectedするギリシア人the Greeksはこれを撃退repelledし、文化cultureの発展developmentを更に進めた。

Around that time, the Persians unified the entire ancient eastern world and even invaded Greece, but the Greeks, who respected freedom, repelled them and furthered the development of their culture.

After that, while the conflict between the polises intensified, Macedonia in the north arose and Greece came under its leadership, but with the expedition of Alexander the Great, Greek culture spread to the east.

Aegean Civilization

The area where the ancient Greeks were active extended to the coastal area of the Mediterranean Sea, but their central stage was the Aegean Sea (archipelago) region.

エーゲ海域Aegean Seaは、その周辺の世界the world around itから明確に区別distinctされた独自の世界world of its ownである。

The Aegean Sea is a world of its own, distinct from the world around it.

Balkan Mountains

その西側to the westはイオニア海Ionian Seaで限られ、南to the southはクレタ島the island of Crete、北側to the northはバルカン山脈Balkan Mountains、東方to the eastは小アジアAsia Minor(アナトリアAnatolia)の高原plateausや大地landsで限られている。

It is bounded to the west by the Ionian Sea, to the south by the island of Crete, to the north by the Balkan Mountains, and to the east by the plateaus and lands of Asia Minor (Anatolia).

Four-fifths of mainland Greece is covered by limestone mountains.

それらの山々mountainsは南部in the southにおいて海中に没入immersed in the seaし、海岸線coastlineは複雑に入り込みintricate、海中in the seaには沈下subsidenceの名残remnantsとして多数の島many islandsが散在scatteredする。

Those mountains are immersed in the sea in the south, the coastline is intricate, and many islands are scattered in the sea as remnants of subsidence.

このような地形topographyであるから、海上by seaは交通travelが容易easyであったが、陸上on landは、小さな地域に分裂divided into small areasし、農耕farmingに適する平地flat landが狭くnarrow、交通transportationが不便inconvenientで統一国家unified nationを構成formすることが困難difficultであった。

Because of this topography, it was easy to travel by sea, but on land, it was divided into small areas, and flat land suitable for farming was narrow, making it difficult to form a unified nation.

The climate is a typical Mediterranean climate with very little rainfall, so drought-tolerant fruit trees such as olives, grapes and figs are typical crops.

The reasons why advanced civilization developed in the Aegean region, which is not suitable for agriculture, are as follows.

Commerce and handicrafts developed through maritime transport

This region is in a very suitable position to receive the advanced civilizations of the Orient.

In other words, there are many good harbors in the mainland, south and east of Greece, and the islands in the Aegean Sea are scattered about, so even the primitive navigational skills of the early days were able to reach Syria and come into contact with advanced civilization, etc. can be given.

Aegean Civilization

新石器時代the Neolithic Ageに、南方the South(エジプトEgypt)や東方the East(シリアSyria・小アジアAsia Minor)や北方the North(東ヨーロッパEastern Europe)の人々が、それぞれ独自の文化their own culturesをもって、この地域にやってきたらしい。

During the Neolithic Age, people from the South (Egypt), the East (Syria/Asia Minor), and the North (Eastern Europe) seem to have come to this region with their own cultures.

やがて前2600年ごろaround 2600 BC、青銅器時代the Bronze Ageに入ると、エーゲ海地域the Aegean regionの各地にほぼ共通の文化common cultureが普及してゆき、前12世紀ごろaround the 12th century BCまで青銅器文明the Bronze Age civilizationが栄えた。

When the Bronze Age began around 2600 BC, a common culture spread throughout the Aegean region, and the Bronze Age civilization flourished until around the 12th century BC.

This is called Aegean civilization.

The Fall of Troy

The ancient Greeks themselves vaguely remembered this period as Greek mythology (especially heroic legends), but modern historians did not consider it historical fact.

Trojan civilization

This civilization first revolves around Crete, an indigenous civilization that predates the Greek invasion.

クレタ島Creteで先住民indigenous peopleの文明civilizationが栄えていた途中に、ギリシア本土mainland of Greeceへはギリシア人the Greeksが侵入invadedし、やがてクレタ文明the Cretan civilizationの影響influenceのもとに、ミケーネ文明the Mycenaean civilizationを成立させる。

While the civilization of the indigenous people was flourishing on Crete, the Greeks invaded the mainland of Greece, eventually establishing the Mycenaean civilization under the influence of the Cretan civilization.

Location of Aegean civilization

クレタ文明the Cretan civilizationはもちろん、ミケーネ文明the Mycenaean civilizationも、後のギリシア文明the Greek civilizationとはかなり性格の異なったdifferent in character文明civilizationである。

Not only the Cretan civilization, but also the Mycenaean civilization is a civilization that is quite different in character from the later Greek civilization.

ギリシア文明Greek civilizationは、西洋文明Western civilizationの直接の源流direct sourceであって、最初の西洋文明the first Western civilizationということができるが、エーゲ文明the Aegean civilizationは、地理的geographicallyにはヨーロッパの一角corner of Europeに位置locatedしてはいても、文明の質quality of civilizationから見ればオリエント文明the Orient civilizationと西洋文明the Western civilizationの中間betweenに位置locatedするものと考えられている。

Greek civilization is the direct source of Western civilization and can be called the first Western civilization.

Although the Aegean civilization is geographically located in a corner of Europe, it is considered to be located between the Orient civilization and the Western civilization in terms of the quality of civilization.

Crete

クレタ島Creteはエーゲ海the Aegean Seaの南端southern tipにあり、南東方the southeastのシリアSyriaやエジプトEgyptから、高度の文明advanced civilizationsの影響influenceを受けやすかったため、まずここで青銅器文明the Bronze Age civilizationが展開し、その文明の波waves of civilizationをギリシア本土mainland Greeceへ送り出した。

Crete, located at the southern tip of the Aegean Sea, was susceptible to the influence of advanced civilizations from Syria and Egypt to the southeast.

First, the Bronze Age civilization developed here, sending waves of civilization to mainland Greece.

この島this islandでは前2600年ごろAround 2600 BCに青銅器時代the Bronze Ageが始まり、農業agriculture(麦wheat・オリーブolivesなど)や牧畜livestock(羊sheep・山羊goats・牛cattle・豚pigs)のほかに小アジア南部southern Asia Minor・シリアSyria方面との海上貿易maritime tradeも発達し、クレタ島の人々The Cretansは世界最古the world's oldestの通商航海民merchant and seafarersとなった。

Around 2600 BC, the Bronze Age began on this island, and in addition to agriculture (wheat, olives, etc.) and livestock (sheep, goats, cattle, pigs), maritime trade with southern Asia Minor and Syria also developed.

The Cretans became the world's oldest merchant and seafarers.

Crete
