Prosperity of Heijokyo

Heijokyo capital transfer

With the enactment of the Taiho Ritsuryo Code (701) in the early 8th century, a Ritsuryo nation was established, and the construction of a suitable castle began to be considered. It's here.

Heijō-kyō

As soon as Emperor Genmei (reigned 707-715) (daughter of Emperor Tenji) ascended to the throne, Heijo-kyo was located north of Fujiwara-kyo (694-710). In 710 (Wado 3rd year), the capital was moved here.

Unlike Fujiwara-kyo, which is surrounded by mountains on three sides, Heijo-kyo has good transportation access. It is in line with feng shui thought, as it is written in the map, forming three mountain towns, lined up with turtles and whisks.

Asuka Palace

In addition, Asuka had a deep relationship with the former local ruling family, which may have been an obstacle to the promotion of the Ritsuryo system.

こうして、784年(延暦3年)、長岡京(ながおか・きょう)Nagaoka-kyōに遷都capital transferされるまで7代70年間 for seven generations and seventy yearsにわたって、ほぼここが都capitalとされた。

In this way, until 784 (3rd year of Enryaku), when the capital was moved to Nagaoka-kyo (Kyoto Nagaoka), this was almost the capital for seven generations and seventy years.

Excavations are currently underway, but the arrangement of official residences is quite different from that of Heian-kyo, such as the Dairi, which is directly connected to the Daigokuden (where the highest state affairs and national ceremonies are held). It is known that

In Heijo-kyo, there are temples such as Daian-ji, Yakushi-ji, and Gangoji (formerly Asuka-dera). Today, it was moved from there, and a mansion was built for the aristocrats.

The population at that time is estimated to be about 5 million to 6 million people, and it is believed that 70,000 to 100,000 people lived in Heijokyo.

Progress of Reclamation

Reclamation of frontiers

Along with the development of the Ritsuryo nation, the Reclamation of frontiers in the southwest and northeast was promoted.

The Tohoku region had already made such efforts since the reign of Abeno Hirafu in the Saimei dynasty (655-661), but the southwest region was the first to be assigned to the Ritsuryo state.

Southwestern region

Due to the development of the Ritsuryo system, Osumi Province (the eastern part of Kagoshima Prefecture and the Amami Islands) was newly established in 713 (6th year of Wado), but in 720 (4th year of Yoro), Osumi Province was established. An incident occurred in which (Ohsumi) was murdered.

However, as a result of the dispatch of the Sei Hayato army following this incident, it seems that most of Hayato surrendered, and after that there were almost no Hayato rebellions.
