トロイア戦争the Trojan Warとは、小アジアAsia MinoのトロイアTroyに対して、ミュケナイMycenaeを中心とするアカイア人the Achaeansの遠征軍Expeditionary forceが行ったギリシア神話上の戦争Greek mythological warである。
トロアス Troas
トロイアTroy、あるいはトロアスTroasという呼称Nameは、後の時代In later timesにイリオスIlios一帯の地域The whole areaにつけられたものである。
この戦役Campaignは、古代ギリシアAncient Greeceにおいて、ホメロスHomerの英雄叙事詩heroic epic『イリアスthe Iliad』、『オデュッセイアthe Odyssey』のほか、『キュプリアthe Cypria』、『アイティオピスthe Aethiopis』、『小イリアスthe Little Iliad』、『イリオスの陥落the Iliupersis』、『ノストイthe Nostoi』などから成る一大叙事詩環Great Epic Cycleを構成した。
またウェルギリウスVirgilはトロイア滅亡Ruin of Troy後のアイネイアスAeneasの遍歴Itineraryを『アエネーイスAeneid』にて描いている。

原因 the origins of the Trojan War
この戦This Warの起因Causeは、『キュプリアthe Cypria』に詳しい。
大神The greatest godゼウスZeusは、増え過ぎた人口Overgrown populationを調節AdjustするためにテミスThemis（秩序の女神Goddess of order）と試案を重ねRepeated thoughts、遂に大戦Great Warを起こして人類の大半Most of humanityを死に至らしめる決意を固めたFinally decided to start
a great war and kill most of humanity。

オリュムポスOlympusでは人間の子Human childペレウスPeleusとティタン神族the Titansの娘daughterテティスThetisの婚儀weddingが行われていたThe wedding was being
heldが、エリスEris（争いの女神goddess of strife and
discord）のみはこの饗宴banquetに招待InvitationされずOnly Eris was not invited to this
feast、怒った彼女は、最も美しい女神The most beautiful
goddessへ捧げると叫んでAngry she shouts to
dedicate to the most beautiful goddess、ヘスペリデスの園the garden of the
Hesperides（不死の庭園Immortal garden）の黄金の林檎the Golden Appleを神々の座The seat of the godsへ投げ入れたThrown in。

この供物offeringをめぐって、殊にヘラHera、アテナAthena、アプロディテAphroditeの三女神the three goddessesによる激しい対立Fierce confrontationが起り、ゼウスZeusはこの林檎the Golden Appleが誰にふさわしいかをトロイアTroyの王子princeパリスParisにゆだねた（パリスの審判Judgement of Paris）。

三女神the three goddessesはそれぞれが最も美しい装いThe most beautiful outfitを凝らしてパリスParisの前に立ったが、なおかつ、ヘラHeraは世界を支配する力The power to rule the
worldを、アテナAthenaはいかなる戦争にも勝利を得る力The power to win any warを、アプロディテAphroditeは最も美しい美女The most beautiful beautyを、それぞれ与える約束を行ったmade a promise to give
each。
ヘレネHelenとパリスParisの愛 The Love of Helen and Paris
パリスParisはその若さYouthによって富と権力Wealth and powerを措いて愛Loveを選び、アプロディテAphroditeの誘いによってAt the invitation of AphroditeスパルタSparta王KingメネラオスMenelausの妃QueenヘレネHelenを奪い去ったTaken away。
カッサンドラ Cassandra
パリスParisの妹younger sisterでトロイアTroyの王女princessカッサンドラCassandraのみはこの事件eventが国を滅ぼすDestroy the countryことになると予言Prophecyしたが、アポロンApolloの呪いcurseによって聞き入れられなかったunacceptable。
メネラオス Menelaus
メネラオスMenelausは、兄elder brotherでミュケナイMycenaeの王KingであるアガメムノンAgamemnonにその事件eventを告げ、かつオデュッセウスOdysseusとともにトロイアTroyに赴いてヘレネHelenの引き渡しextraditionを求めた。
しかし、パリスParisはこれを断固拒否absolutely refuseしたため、アガメムノンAgamemnon、メネラオスMenelaus、オデュッセウスOdysseusはヘレネHelen奪還recoverとトロイアTroy懲罰punishmentの遠征軍Expeditionary forceを組織Organizationした。

この戦争This Warでは神々Godsも両派both sidesに分かれ、ヘラHera、アテナAthena、ポセイドンPoseidonがギリシア側Greek sideに、アポロンApollo、アルテミスArtemis、アレスAres、アプロディテAphroditeがトロイア側Troy sideに味方supportした。

集められたリーダーたちCollected leadersがアウリスAulis（現エウボイア島EuboeaのアヴリダAvlida）で犠牲を捧げているSacrificingと、予言者Prophet・カルカスCalchasが戦争Warは10年続くだろうと予言するPredict that the war will last for ten years。
ギリシア軍the Greek
armyはミュシアMysiaのテウトラニアTeuthrania（ペルガモンPergamon）の都市に到着Arrive in the city、トロイアTroyと間違えて攻撃するAttack by mistake for Troy。
テレポスTelephusが町を助けに来るCome to help the townが、アキレウスAchillesによって負傷するInjured by Achilles。
アキレウスAchilles（右）は、座ったテレポスTelephusの傷口に槍から錆をこすり落としている

ギリシア艦隊Greek fleetは嵐stormのために離散Discrete due to storm。
アキレウスAchillesはスキュルス島Scyrosに入港Enter the portし、リュコメデスLycomedesの娘daughter・デイダメイアDeidamiaと結婚marriageする。
それからトロイアTroyまで案内させるためテレポスTelephusを介抱する。

ギリシア軍the Greek
armyがアウリスAulisで二度目の招集Second convocation。
アガメムノンAgamemnonは牡鹿buckを殺したKilled the stagことでアルテミス女神the goddess
Artemisの怒りを買うinvoke the wrath of。
カルカスCalchasは、トロイアTroyに艦隊fleetを運ぶために必要な風のための神への犠牲divine priceとして、アガメムノンAgamemnonの娘daughterイピゲネイアIphigeniaの犠牲sacrificeを取り仕切っているpresiding over。

女神goddessをなだめるためTo soothe the goddess、そして航海の無事のためAnd for the safety of the
voyage、カルカスCalchasから、娘daughterのイピゲネイアIphigeniaを生贄Sacrificeに捧げるよう説得されるPersuaded to sacrifice。

タウリス Tauris （クリミア半島Crimean Peninsulaの古名Ancient name）
アキレウスAchillesとの結婚marriageと偽ってdisguiseイピゲネイアIphigeniaを連れ出すTake outが、アルテミスArtemisは祭壇altarの上のイピゲネイアIphigeniaを鹿deerとすり替えReplace with deer、タウリスTauris（クリミア半島Crimean Peninsulaの古名Ancient name）の土地landまで連れて行きTake Iphigenia to、不死immortalにする。

ギリシア軍the Greek armyは遙かテネドス島the island of Tenedosまで航海voyageし、祝宴FeastをあげているHave a feastと、ピロクテテスPhiloctetesが蛇snakeに噛まれis bitten by a snake、レムノス島the island of Lemnosに取り残されるleft behind on。
そこで、アキレウスAchillesがアガメムノンAgamemnonと喧嘩quarrelをする。

鎧armorと短いキトンshort chitonを身に着けている、右手に剣swordを保持し、左に盾shield、ガレー船の船首prow of a galleyから降りる、右下に見える波waves。

プロテシラオスProtesilausがヘクトルに殺されるKilled by Hector。
しかし、アキレウスAchillesはポセイドンPoseidonの子child・キュクノスCycnusを殺しKill、トロイア軍Trojan armyを追い払うGet rid of the Trojan army。
ギリシア軍the Greek armyは死者を引き取ってthe Greek army takes over the dead、ヘレネHelenと財宝の引き渡しを求めてSeeking the delivery of treasure with Helen、トロイアTroyに使者を遣わすSend a messenger to Troy。
トロイアTroyはそれを拒否Troy rejects it。
アキレウス Achillesはヘクトル Hectorを刺し殺したStabbed to death
ギリシア軍the Greek armyはトロイアTroyに対する最初の攻撃を試み、周囲を荒廃させるAttempts the first attack
on Troy and devastates the surroundings。
アキレウスAchillesはヘレネHelenと会いたいと望みWant to meet Helen、アプロディテAphroditeとテティスThetis（アキレウスAchillesの母親mother）が二人の面会を目論むAiming to meet two people。
ギリシア軍the Greek armyは帰郷Homecomingを望むようになるが、アキレウスAchillesに止められる。

plundering nearby towns、トロイアTroyの王子prince・トロイロスTroilusを殺すKill Troilus。
パトロクロスPatroclusはトロイアTroy王子prince・リュカオンLycaonを誘拐しKidnap Lycaon、レムノス島the island of Lemnosに連れて行き、奴隷として売るtake him to the island of Lemnos and sell him as a slave。

しかし、アカイアAchaea方の知将resourceful general・オデュッセウスOdysseusは、巨大な木馬giant wooden horseを造り、その内部に兵Soldiersを潜ませるHiding soldiers insideという作戦を考案しInvented the strategy（『小イリアスthe Little Iliad』ではアテナ女神the goddess Athenaが考案しInvented）、これを実行に移したPut this into practice。

この「トロイアの木馬the Trojan Horse」の計plotは、アポロンApolloの神官priest・ラオコオンLaocoonと王女princess・カッサンドラCassandraに見抜かれたSpotted byが、ラオコオンは海蛇Sea snakeに絞め殺されStrangled by the Sea snake、カッサンドラCassandraの予言Prophecyは誰も信じることができない定めになっていたのでBecause the prophecy was
a rule that no one could believe、トロイアTroyはこの策略trickにかかりTroy takes this trick、一夜で陥落Fall in one nightした。

『イリアス the Iliad』
先の戦いでIn the previous battle、アカイア勢Achaean power（ギリシア軍the Greek
army）はトロイア側Troy's sideにささやかな勝利A small victoryを収め、戦利品lootを手に入れたA small victory on Troy's side and Got a loot。
しかし、その戦利品lootのなかにはBut some of the loot、
光明神god of lightポイボスPhoebus・アポロンApolloの神官priestであるクリュセスChrysesの娘daughter・クリュセイスChryseisもまた含まれていたalso included。
アガメムノンAgamemnonから娘daughterのクリュセイスChryseisの身代金を要求するattempting to ransomクリュセス Chryses

戦闘の混乱のなかでIn the turmoil of battleアカイア勢Achaean powerに捕らわれた娘を返して貰おうとTrying to get the
daughter captured by Achaean power back、神官priestクリュセスChrysesはアカイア軍Achaean armyの陣地を貢物を携え訪れるがChryses visits Achaean
army position with tribute、傲ったarrogantアカイア勢Achaean powerはクリュセスChrysesを侮辱insultsするThe arrogant Achaean power insults Chryses。
目的purposeを果たせず、海辺を一人戻るクリュセスはChryses who does not serve his purpose and returns to the beach
alone、自らが仕えるアポロン神the god Apolloに祈りPray to Apollo, who
serves him、「アカイア軍Achaean armyに報いを」と求めるAsk Achaean army for a
reward。

ムーサMousa（ミューズMuse）の言葉は劇的に転回しMuse's words turn dramatically、クリュセスChrysesがこう祈るやWhen Chryses prays like this、オリュムポスの高みよりFrom the height of Olympus、ポイボスPhoebus・アポロンApolloが銀弓を手に空を飛びApollo flies in the sky
with a silver bow in his hand、アカイア軍Achaean armyの陣地の上空に至るやAs soon as he reach the
sky above the Achaean army position、数知れぬ矢を射かけShoot countless arrows、アカイア軍陣地the Achaean army positionは、神の送る疫病the plague sent by Godに悲鳴をあげて倒れるScream and collapse to the plague sent by God兵士たちの修羅場と変ずるTurn into a soldier's pandemonium。
アキレウス Achilles
しかし、雄壮なアポロンApolloの活躍を活写した後However, after a live
copy of the magnificent Apollo's success、なお、なぜアキレウスAchillesは怒っているのか、その理由は不明であるThe reason why Achilles
is angry is unknown。
こうして、詩は更に続いて行くIn this way, the poem
goes on。
翻って、このようにアキレウスAchillesが怒りを抱いたというのはOn the contrary, Achilles was angry like this、一体、戦いのどのような時点であったのかWhat was the point of the
battle。
メネラオスMenelaus
それは、パリスParis（トロイア王King of TroyプリアモスPriamの王子prince）に奪われたヘレネHelenを取り戻すべくTo regain Helen stolen by Paris、ヘレネHelenの夫husbandメネラオスMenelausをはじめとするincludingアカイア勢Achaean power（ギリシア勢Greek power）がトロイアTroyに攻め寄せてから十年の歳月が流れたときのことであったIt was when ten years had
passed since they attacked Troy。
アガメムノン Agamemnon
ギリシア勢Greek powerはメネラオスMenelausの兄elder brotherでミュケナイの王King of MycenaeのアガメムノンAgamemnonの指揮の下で戦いFight under the command of Agamemnon、トロイア勢Trojan powerはプリアモスPriamの長子FirstbornヘクトルHectorの指揮の下に戦っていたfighting under the command of Hector。
アキレウスAchillesは、友人friendパトロクロスPatroclusと共に、ミュルミドン人たちMyrmidonesを率いて戦いに参加していたhe was in the fight with
Myrmidones。
このような背景のなかでIn such a background、神官priestクリュセスChrysesのアポロン神the god
Apolloへの祈りの事件が起こったA prayer incident to
Apollo happenedのである。

アポロンApolloの矢arrowによる疫病の発生outbreak of the plagueから十日目Ten days after the outbreak of the plague caused by the
arrow of Apollo、アキレウスAchillesの発議initiativeにより集会rallyが持たれたA rally was held by the initiative of Achilles。
カルカスCalchasによってBy Calchas、アポロンの怒りApollo's angerを鎮める必要があるneeds to be calmed downため、献策dedicationがなされたA dedication was made because Apollo's anger needs to be
calmed down。

not be redistributed、「わたしには戦う義務はないI have no obligation to fight。しかしあなたがた兄弟のために戦闘に参加しているBut I am participating in
the battle for your brothers」と述べるstate。
怒れるアキレウスAchillesとアガメムノンAgamemnonに引き渡されるブリセイスBriseis
アガメムノンAgamemnonは立腹し、軽率にもAgamemnon was angry and rashly「われらのために戦う戦士は山ほどいるThere are tons of
warriors fighting for us。そなたが義務で戦うというのならIf you are obliged to
fight、われらは汝なしでも戦うことができるWe can fight without you」と応酬したresponded。
そして、クリュセイスChryseisの代償としてAnd in return
for Chryseis、アキレウスAchillesの戦利品lootであるブリセイスBriseisを自分のものにするOwn the Achilles loot Briseis。
テティス Thetis
アキレウスAchillesはアガメムノンAgamemnonの仕打ちに怒りAchilles gets angry at Agamemnon's treatment、母motherテティスThetisに祈りprays to Mother Thetis、ゼウスZeusがトロイア勢Trojan powerの味方をすることでWith Zeus on the side of Trojan powerギリシア勢Greek powerを追い詰めさせることを願うHope to hunt down Greek
power。
テティスThetisが請け合い、ゼウスZeusに頼み込むとWhen Thetis promises and
asks Zeus、ゼウスZeusもこの願いを受け入れたZeus also accepted this
wish。
ヘラ Hera （ユノ Juno）
ゼウスZeusの妻wifeヘラHeraは、ゼウスZeusがテティスThetisの願い通りトロイア勢Trojan powerの味方をするつもりではないかと気付きRealizes that Zeus
intends to be on the side of Trojan power as Thetis wishes、ゼウスZeusを難詰censureしたが、息子sonヘパイストスHephaestusのとりなしで、とりあえず怒りを納めたHephaestus intervened and
angry for the time being。
アキレウスAchillesはその日以降、集会にも出ず、戦闘にも参加しなくなった。
Achilles hasn't attended rallies or participated in
battle since that day.
こうしてアキレウスAchillesの怒りから始まりThus it started with the
wrath of Achilles、『イリアス Iliad』は劇的な展開において物語を繰り広げて行く“Iliad” unfolds the story in a
dramatic development。
ゼウス Zeus
総攻撃の開始 Start of

ゼウスZeusは、テティスThetisの願いをどのように叶えるのがよいかを考えZeus thinks about how to
fulfill Thetis' wishes、ギリシア勢Greek powerの総大将commander-in-chiefアガメムノンAgamemnonを夢でまどわすことにしたhe decided to dream about Agamemnon, the
commander-in-chief of Greek power。
アガメムノンAgamemnonは、ネストルNestorが「オリュムポスの神々Olympian godsは皆ギリシア勢Greek powerの味方をすることになったからOlympian gods are all on
the side of Greek power、全軍で攻め寄せればイリオスIliosを攻め落とせるIf you attack with the whole army, you will attack Ilios」と説くところを夢に見たhe dreamed of preaching。
アガメムノン Agamemnon
目が覚めたアガメムノンAwaken Agamemnonは、すぐにでもイリオスIliosを陥落させることができると思い込み、総攻撃を決意するBelieving that Ilios can
be brought down immediately, he decides to make a total attack。
しかしゼウスZeusは、ギリシア勢Greek powerを劣勢に追い込みBut Zeus puts Greek power
inferior、アガメムノンAgamemnonに、アキレウスAchillesを怒らせたことを後悔させることが目的だったのであるThe purpose was to make
Agamemnon regret having offended Achilles。
ギリシア勢Greek powerが美々しく隊伍を整えると、トロイア勢Trojan powerも攻撃準備を完了した。
When Greek
power brilliantly prepared the squadron, Trojan power was ready to attack.
両軍は、まさに激突しようとしていた。
The two
armies were about to clash.
ヘクトルHectorはパリスParisの女々しい弱腰Softnessを叱責Admonishし、
パリスParisを戦場に行くGo to Warよう戒めるExhort

パリスとメネラオスの一騎打ち

between Paris and Menelaus
このときパリスParisは軍勢の先頭に立ちAt this time Paris was at the forefront of
the army、「誰でもいいから俺と勝負しろAnyone can play against
me」と言ったSaid。
メネラオスMenelausは、仇敵の姿を見るや、喜び勇んで飛び出してきた。
As soon as Menelaus saw his enemy, he jumped
out with joy and courage.
しかしパリスParisはメネラオスMenelausを見ると怖気づき、逃げ出してしまった。
But when Paris saw Menelaus, he was scared and ran
away.
これを見たヘクトルはHector who saw this、イリオスIliosの災厄の種であるパリスParisの不甲斐なさをなじりPlay with the awkwardness of Paris, the
disaster of Ilios、「貴様のようなLike you格好ばかりの奴はJust looking guy、さっさとメネラオスMenelausに殺されてしまえばよかったのだI wish Menelaus had killed you right
away」と責めたBlame。

するとパリスParisは殊勝commendableにも「私とメネラオスMenelausで一騎打ちをしOne-on-one combat with me at Menelaus、勝ったほうがヘレネHelenと奪った財宝を取ることにしたいThe one who wins wants to
take the treasure he stole with Helen」と申し出たOffered。
ヘクトルHectorは喜び、ギリシア勢Greek powerにこの話を申し込んだ。
Hector was
delighted and applied for this story to Greek power.
アガメムノンAgamemnonもこの話を呑みAgamemnon also accepts this story、両軍の戦士Warriors of both armiesが武装をはずして見守る中Disarm and watch、両者が一騎打ちを行うことになったBoth will fight
one-on-one。
パリス Parisとメネラオス Menelaus
対峙するパリスParisとメネラオスMenelaus。

双方が槍を投げるが、両者共にこれを避けた。

throw a spear, but both avoid it.
次にメネラオスMenelausが剣を抜いて切りかかるとNext, when Menelaus pulls out his sword and
cuts、メネラオスの剣はパリスParisの兜にあたって砕けたThe Menelaus sword broke when it hit the
helmet of Paris。
パリスParisがくらくらしているところをWhere Paris is feeling

section, known as the Oresteia, is narrated in Odyssey books 3 and 4 by Nestor
