アテナイAthensの最も偉大な英雄The greatest hero。
アイゲウスAegeusまたはポセイドンPoseidonとピッテウスPittheusの娘daughter・アイトラAethraとの息子son。
アイゲウス Aegeus
アイゲウスAegeusがデルポイの神託the Delphic oracleに伺いをたててAsk、子供childができないのだがどうしたら子供childができるようになるかと尋ねたhe can't have children, but he asked how he could have childrenところ、アテナイAthensに戻るまでUntil he return to葡萄酒袋wineskinの口bulging mouthを開けてはならないDo not openとの託宣oracleが下ったThe decree was given。
ピッテウス Pittheus アイトラ Aethra テセウス Theseus
アイゲウスAegeusはその神託oracleの意味meaningが分からなかったdid not understandので、トロイゼンTroezenに赴き、トロイゼン王King of Troezen・ピッテウスPittheusに神託oracleの意味meaningについて相談したConsulted about。
アイトラ Aethra
するとピッテウスPittheusは、その意味meaningは帰国return homeしたアイゲウスAegeusが息子sonを得ることになろうWill get a sonとの予言prophecyであると解釈interpretationし、アイゲウスAegeusにスパイリアSphairiaという小島islandに一緒に来るように誘いInvite him to come with him、そこで彼を葡萄酒wineで酔わせIntoxicate with
wine、娘daughterのアイトラAethraと床を共にさせたlet her share the bed。
アイゲウス Aegeus
アイゲウスAegeusはまもなく一部始終を悟りSoon he will realize the whole story、その上、アテナイAthensに向けてforトロイゼンTroezenを離れる前Before leavingに、アイトラAethraに子供childができたことも知ったalso learned that Aethra had a child。

そこで彼は彼女を大きな石huge rockのあるところに連れて行き、その石huge rockを持ち上げると、その下にunder a
huge rock剣swordとサンダルsandalsを置き、再びその上に岩huge rockを被せた。
彼はアイトラAethraに、万一子供childが男児Boyだったら、その子Boyがその岩huge rockを持ち上げられるくらい大きくなるまで待って、それからその子BoyをアテナイAthensに送るように、そして、その若者Youthが岩huge
rockを持ち上げて、自分のもとに剣swordとサンダルsandalsを持って来たら、彼を実の子Real childと認め、アテナイAthensの王位継承者Successor to the throneとしよう、と言った。

もっとも、アイゲウスAegeus自身の王位throne保持も不確かであった。
However, the retention of Aegeus' own
throne was also uncertain.
彼の腹違いの兄弟half brother・パラスPallasとその50人の息子Fifty sonsたちが、彼はパンディオン2世Pandion
IIの養子adopted sonにすぎないと宣言Declared he was only adopted by Pandion IIし、王権throneは自分たちのものであると主張していたためBecause they claimed that the kingship belonged to themである。

一方、トロイゼンTroezenでは、ピッテウスPittheusが娘daughterの愛人loverはポセイドンPoseidonであるから、娘daughterのやがて産む子child to be born
soonは神の子child of Godであるという話を触れ回っていたtalking about being a child of God。
のちにテセウスTheseusはポセイドンPoseidonの息子sonであるという考えがアテナイAthensで広まった。
Later the idea that
Theseus was Poseidon's son spread in Athens.
それにテセウスTheseus自身も父fatherがポセイドンPoseidonであると主張したと言われる。
And Theseus
himself is said to have claimed that his father was Poseidon.
アイトラ Aethra テセウス Theseus
アイトラ Aethra テセウス Theseus
テセウスTheseusが成人するとWhen he grows up、アイトラAethraは彼に岩huge rockを見せてAethra showed him a rock、彼が王家の血筋Royal lineageであるとの秘密secretを伝えたTelling the secret that he is of royal lineage。
彼はたやすく岩huge rockを持ち上げて剣swordとサンダルsandalsを手にするとWhen he
easily lifts the rock and picks up a sword and sandals、徒歩でOn footアテナイAthensへと向かったwent to
Athens on foot。
トロイゼン Troezen
早くて安全safeな船旅journey by seaよりもThan a fast and safe journey by seaサロニコス湾the Saronic Gulfに沿って回る困難dangerousな陸路の旅journey by landを選んだChoosed a difficult overland trip to go around the Saronic Gulfのである。
それというのもBecause that is、勇者brave・ヘラクレスHeraclesを心から賞賛praiseするテセウスTheseus who truly praises the hero Heraclesは、陸路journey by landにつきまとう数多くの盗賊banditsの噂を耳にしていてheard rumors of many bandits on the journey by land、自分自身も力試しをしてみたかったからであるBecause he wanted to try his strength himself。
ペリペテス Periphetes
エピダウロスEpidaurusの近くでNear、テセウスTheseusはヘパイストスHephaestusの息子sonでコリュネテスCorynetes（「棍棒男the Club-Bearer」）と呼ばれていたペリペテスPeriphetesに出会ったmet Periphetes who was called。
ペリペテスPeriphetesがそう綽名されていたwas so nicknamedのは、彼が青銅の棍棒bronze clubで旅人travelersを殴り殺していたからであるBecause he was beating the traveler with a bronze club。
テセウスTheseusは格闘技Martial artsに長けていたwas good at martial artsので、棍棒the clubを取り上げるtake upと、ペリペテスPeriphetesが他の多くの者にしていたのと同じようにしてJust
like Periphetes did to many others彼を殴り殺したBeat him to death。
テセウスTheseusは棍棒the clubをそのまま持ち続けたためBecause Theseus kept holding the club、ライオンの皮lion's
skinがヘラクレスHeraclesの象徴SymbolとなったようにJust as the lion's skin became a symbol of Heracles、棍棒the clubが彼の象徴SymbolとなったThe
club became his symbol。
トロイゼン Troezen
シニス Sinis
コリントス地峡the Isthmus of Corinthで、テセウスTheseusはシニスSinisに呼び止められたTheseus was stopped by Sinis。
シニスSinisは無法者Outlawで、旅人travelersに松の木pine treesを折り曲げるのを手伝わせてHelp the traveler bend the pine tree（そこから彼はFrom there he was「松曲げ男pine-bender」と綽名されたnicknamed）、その後突然それを放ってThen suddenly throw
it away旅人travelersを空中に投げ飛ばしたThrow the traveler
into the airとも、また自分で地面まで折り曲げた2本の松の木he also bent two
pine trees to the ground himselfに通りすがりの者たちを縛り付けTied up passers-by to pine trees、木から手を離すと彼らは裂かれて死んだとも、言われるIt is also said that they were torn and died when they let go of
the tree。
テセウスTheseusはシニスSinisをその松の木pine treesで殺した。
Theseus killed Sinis with the pine trees.
クロムミュオンの牝豚 the Crommyonian sow
クロムミュオンCrommyonでは、テセウスTheseusはパイアPhaea（「灰色gray」）と呼ばれるCalled灰色grayの牝豚sowの形をした悪名高い害獣Notorious vermin in the shape of a sow（クロムミュオンの牝豚the Crommyonian sow）を片付けて人々を救ったCleaned up the vermin and saved people。
その獣beast（クロムミュオンの牝豚the Crommyonian sow）は怪物monsterのエキドナEchidnaとテュポンTyphonから生まれBorn from、その地方を荒らし回っていたtrolling around the regionのである。

しかし、他の説によればHowever, according
to other theories、この厄介物nuisance（クロムミュオンの牝豚the Crommyonian sow）は山賊banditsないしは牝豚sowと綽名nicknamedされていた堕落した女fallen womanだったWasという。

海に投げ込まれるスキロンSciron Sciron beaten by Theseus
スキロン Sciron
テセウスTheseusがメガラMegaraの地に入るEnter the land ofと、道が山とスキロンの岩the
Sceironian Rocksと呼ばれるCalled湾を見下ろす高い崖a cliff on the
Saronic coastとの間を走っている場所Where the road runs
between the mountains and the cliffsにやって来たCame to
the place。
ここに潜んでいたWas lurking hereのがスキロンScironという悪党robberで、旅人travelersの持ち物を盗んでSteal a traveler's belongingsは彼らに無理やり自分の足を洗わせようとしたforced
them to wash his feet。
スキロン Sciron
旅人travelersが彼の前にかがみこむとknelt before him、彼らを崖cliffから蹴落としhe kicked them over the cliff into the sea、湾Gulfの浜辺に棲んでいたLived on the beach
of the bay大亀a monstrous sea
turtleの餌食にしたthey were eaten by a monstrous sea turtle。
テセウスTheseusはスキロンScironの言うままになるふりをしたTheseus pretended to be what Sciron saidが、腰をかがめたときにWhen Theseus bend downスキロンScironの足をつかみGrab
his feet崖cliffから彼を投げ落としてpushing him off the cliff、大亀a monstrous sea
turtleの餌食にしたSciron was eaten by a monstrous sea turtle。
（しかし、メガラMegaraではスキロンScironは盗賊robberではなく、偉大な兵士the military leaderであったと言われるIt is
said that he was a great soldier。）
トロイゼン Troezen
ケルキュオン Cercyon
テセウスTheseusが次に関わった争いTheseus's next battleは、当時アテナイAthensから独立していた都市・エレウシスEleusisにおいてのものだったIt was in Eleusis city that was
independent of Athens at the time。
そこのケルキュオンCercyonと呼ばれるCalledエレウシスの王the King of Eleusisは負けた方が死ぬThe loser was murderedという条件でOn the
condition that he will die if he loses、旅の者passers-byたちに自分との格闘wrestling matchを強要していたForced travelers to wrestle with himself。
しかし、ケルキュオンCercyonはテセウスTheseusという強敵に出会い、敗れて殺されHowever, Cercyon met a strong
enemy named Theseus, was defeated and was killed、エレウシスEleusisの王位throneはテセウスTheseusのものとなったbecame Theseus's。
彼はのちにそこをアテナイの王国the Kingdom
of Athensに加えHe later added it
to the Kingdom of Athens、ケルキュオンCercyonの孫grandson・ヒッポトオンHippothoonをその統治者にしたMade him its ruler。
プロクルステス Procrustes
アイガレオス山Mount Korydallosに近いエリネオスErineusでは、テセウスTheseusはプロクルステスProcrustes（「叩き延ばす者the stretcher」）に引き止められたTheseus was detained by Procrustes。
彼は旅人passer-byを自分の宿にとめHe
keeps the traveler in his inn、背の低い者Short personは長いベッドLong bedにThe
short one laid on a long bed、背の高い者tall manは短いベッドShort bedに寝かせたThe tall
one laid on a short bed。
そのあと彼らをベッドbedに縛り付けるとThen tie them to
the bed、ちょうどベッドbedの長さlengthに合うようにJust to fit the length of the bed彼らの身体bodyを伸ばしたstretchり、身体の端を切り落としたamputate the excess lengthりしていたProcrustes stretched their bodies and cut off
the edges of their bodies。
テセウスTheseusはその仕打ちを用いて、プロクルステスProcrustesを殺した。
Theseus used that treatment to kill Procrustes.
プロクルステスProcrustesは非常に背が高かったvery
tallので、その首Headを切り落としたのである。
Procrustes was so
tall that Theseus cut off his neck.
プロクルステスProcrustes（「叩き延ばす者the stretcher」）はまたダマステスDamastes（「大人しくさせる者Those
who make you quiet」）とかポリュペモン（「有害な者Harmful person」）としても知られた。

その後after that、テセウスTheseusはケピソス川the river Cephissusにやって来たときWhen Theseus come to、旅に出て以来初めて親切な歓迎hospitalityを受けたhe received a kind welcome for the first time since he went on a
trip。
デメテルDemeterにいちじくの木fig-treeをもらったピュタロスPhytalusの子孫descendantsが、テセウスTheseusの犯した殺人の罪を浄めhave
cleansed Theseus of the murders he had committed、彼を厚くもてなしたwarm
welcomeのである。
そこでテセウスTheseusは彼らを司祭Priestにした。
So Theseus made them priests.
ピュタロス Phytalus キンポウゲ Ranunculus
子childrenを殺し、戦車chariotに乗って逃げるメデイアMedea
テセウスTheseusがアテナイAthensにやって来ると、街は混乱状態にあった。
When Theseus came to Athens, the city
was in turmoil.
アイゲウスAegeusには嫡出子legitimate childがなく、パラスPallasの50人の息子Fifty sonsたち（パランティダイthe Pallantidai）が王権throneを握ろうと企んでいたからであるBecause they were planning to take the kingship。
アイゲウスAegeusはメデイアMedeaと暮らしていたがAegeus lived with Medea、彼女は母motherである自分が外国の出Foreign originであるにもかかわらずShe is a mother, even though she is from a foreign country、自分の息子son・メドスMedusがアテナイAthensの王位throneを継承successionすることを望んでいたshe wanted her son to succeed to the throne of Athens。
テセウスTheseusは、道中に手柄exploitを立てていたので温かい歓迎hospitalityを受けたTheseus received a warm welcome as they were credited along the
wayが、自分の正体true identityは明かさなかったhe did
not reveal his true identity immediately。
テセウスTheseus アイゲウスAegeus メデイアMedea
しかし、メデイアMedeaはテセウスTheseusであることに気付きMedea recognized Theseus immediately、自分の息子sonのためにアイゲウスAegeusに向かってTalk to Aegeus for her sonあの者That personはパラスPallasの息子sonsたちと結託しているconspire withと語って、宴会の席で自分が彼に毒poisonを盛るのを認めて欲しいと説得したPersuaded Aegeus to admit to poisoning Theseus
at the banquet。
アイゲウスAegeusは、テセウスTheseusの剣swordに気づいて息子sonと知った
しかし、テセウスTheseusが父fatherの剣swordで肉meatを切るときBut when Theseus cuts meat with his father's sword、その剣swordが必ずアイゲウスAegeusの目にとまるように示したためにBecause the sword always showed to catch Aegeus’s eye、アイゲウスAegeusは息子sonの正体true identityを知りAegeus knows his son's identity、危ういところで息子sonを毒殺Poisoningせずにすんだdidn't have to poison his son in the nick of time。
アイゲウス Aegeus
老王Old kingはテセウスTheseusの杯cup of poisonを地面に叩き落としOld king knocks cup of Theseus
down to the ground、テセウスTheseusも自分の危険に気がついたTheseus also
realized his dangerのである。
メデイア Medea
メデイアMedeaはアテナイAthensから逃れ、以後二度とそこでは姿が見られなかった。
Medea escaped from Athens and was never seen there again.
アイゲウスAegeusは息子sonを胸にかき抱き、彼を後継者successorに指名した。
Aegeus hugged his
son in his chest and nominated him as his successor.
テセウス Theseus
次にnextテセウスTheseusは、パラスPallasの50人の息子たちfifty sons（パランティダイthe Pallantidai）と戦わねばならなかったHad to fight against。
テセウスTheseusが既に王位継承者Successor to the
throneであると公言されていたTheseus was already
professed to be the successor to the throneので、彼らはおおっぴらに謀叛rebellionを起こしてきたThey have openly rebelledのである。
彼らのうち半数halfはアテナイAthensに進軍しHalf of them
marched on Athens、半数halfはテセウスTheseusの支持者たちを待ち伏せしたHalf of
them ambushed Theseus's supporters。
しかし、使者heraldレオスLeosがこの計画their schemesをテセウスTheseusに報告したwarnedのでBut because the herald Leos
reported this plan to Theseus、テセウスTheseusは待ち伏せの一団を不意打ちにしたTheseus surprised a
group of ambush。
もう一方の軍勢は、この知らせを聞いて逃げてしまった。
The other army ran away after hearing
this news.
マラトン Marathon
マラトンの牡牛 the Marathonian Bull （クレタの牡牛 the Cretan Bull）
それからテセウスTheseusは、アッティカAtticaの東eastにあるマラトンMarathonに赴き、その地方を荒らし回っていたWas trolling around the region猛牛raging bullを退治captureした。

彼がこの手柄exploitを成し遂げたHe
accomplished this creditのは、メデイアMedeaが彼に毒poisonを盛ろうとする前のことでBefore Medea tried to poison him、彼女の要求で父father・アイゲウスAegeusが彼をその危険な仕事に送りだしたAt her request his father Aegeus
sent him to that dangerous jobのか、それともメデイアMedeaが立ち去ったあと彼がその冒険adventureに出かけて行ったOr he
went on the adventure after Medea leftのかは、出典Sourceにより異なるDepends on the source。
ミノスMinos ゼウスZeusとエウロペEuropaの息子son
パシパエPasiphae ヘリオスHeliosとペルセイスPerseisの娘daughter
その牡牛BullはポセイドンPoseidonがクレタ島CreteのミノスMinosに与え、ミノスMinosの妻wife・パシパエPasiphaeが愛した牡牛Bullだった。
ヘラクレスHeraclesが、この牡牛Bullを7番目の難業the Seventh Labor（クレタの牡牛the Cretan Bull）としてギリシアGreeceに連れて来て以来Since Heracles brought Bull to
Greece、牡牛BullはアッティカAtticaをさまよっていたThe bull was
wandering around Atticaのである。
アンドロゲオス Androgeus
アイゲウスAegeusは、既にミノスMinosの息子son・アンドロゲオスAndrogeusをその牡牛退治capture the Bullに送り出していたWas sending Androgeus out to
get rid of the bullが、アンドロゲオスAndrogeusは牡牛Bullを殺そうとして逆に殺されてしまっていたAndrogeus was killed in an attempt to kill
the bull。
今度はテセウスTheseusが出かけた。
This time Theseus went out.
途中、テセウスTheseusはヘカレHecaleという小柄な老女ancient womanに歓待Hospitalityを受けた。
On the way, Theseus was welcomed by a
small old woman named Hecale.
テセウス Theseus
ヘカレHecaleは、もしテセウスTheseusが無事に帰って来たらIf Theseus returns
safelyゼウスZeusに感謝gratitudeの犠牲sacrificeを捧げようと誓ったHecale vowed to sacrifice gratitude to Zeusが、テセウスTheseusがまだ戻らないうちに彼女は死んでしまったShe died before Theseus returned。
牡牛the Bullを捕獲captureして戻って来るCapture the bull and come backと、テセウスTheseusは老女ancient woman・ヘカレHecaleの思い出にその地に祭りを創設したTheseus founded a festival there in memory of the old woman。
それからテセウスTheseusは牡牛the BullをアテナイAthensに連れて行きThen Theseus took the bull to Athens、アポロンApolloに犠牲sacrificeとして捧げたDedicated to Apollo as a sacrifice。
ミノス Minos
この冒険adventureの結果The
result of this adventure、テセウスTheseusはアンドロゲオスAndrogeusの死deathと、その父father・ミノスMinosが息子sonの死deathをもたらした罰punishmentとしてアテナイAthensに課していた貢物tributeのことを知ったlearned about the tribute that Minos
had imposed on Athens as a punishment。
息子sonを殺されたミノスMinosはアッティカAtticaに戦いbattleを仕掛け勝利victoryを収めた。
Minos, whose son was killed, fought
against Attica and won the victory.
戦争war中、アテナイ人たちthe Atheniansは疫病Plagueにやられたのである。
Because the Athenians were plagued
during the war.
勝ったミノスWinning Minosは、アテナイ人the Atheniansに、毎年Every year（あるいはプルタルコスPlutarchによると9年ごとにEvery nine years）7人の若者Seven boysと7人の娘Seven girlsをクレタ島Creteへ送ることを強要demandしたForced to send Seven boys and seven girls to Crete。
ミノタウロス Minotaur
ラビュリントス（迷宮）LabyrinthにいるミノタウロスMinotaur（パシパエPasiphaeと牡牛Bullとの間にできた子childで、体bodyは人間humanだが頭headと角hornsは牡牛Bullである怪物Monster）の餌食preyにするためである。
ちなみにFor your
information、ラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthというのは、アテナイAthensから追放exileされていたダイダロスDaedalusが、ミノスMinosの指示でミノタウロスMinotaurを住まわせるために築いた迷宮LabyrinthであるIn the labyrinth
that Daedalus built to live Minotaur at the direction of Minos。
パシパエPasiphae ヘリオスHeliosとペルセイスPerseisの娘daughter
テセウスTheseusが貢物tributeのことを知った時もEven when Theseus learned of the tribute、ちょうどその貢物tributeを納めねばならない時であったIt was just time to pay the tribute。
そして一説によるとAccording to another
report、ミノスMinosは特に一団A groupの中にテセウスTheseusを入れるよう要求demandしたと言われる。
According to another report, Minos is
said to have specifically requested Theseus to be part of the group.
しかし、プルタルコスPlutarchはじめほとんどの作者はHowever, most authors, including Plutarch、王Kingの息子sonだけが犠牲者Victimになることを免れることにTo avoid being a victim only to the king's son、アテナイAthensの民衆peopleが怒りを示したからだと主張しているClaims that it is because the people of Athens have shown anger。
誰が犠牲者Victimになるかは、通常くじ引きLotteryで決められていた。
Who will be the victim was usually
decided by lottery.
そこでテセウスTheseusは自ら進んで自分も犠牲者Victimの1人になりたいと申し出た。
So Theseus volunteered to be one of the
victims.
また一説によればAccording to
another report、テセウスTheseusはくじ引きLotteryの中に含まれている者たちの中に自分も加えるようTheseus should add himself to those included in the lottery主張しただけでJust insisted、くじ引きLotteryをしてみると偶然彼も当たっていたWhen he tried the lottery, he happened to win、ということであるThat's what it means。
アイゲウス Aegeus
息子sonがいよいよ出発するとなってhis son is finally leaving悲しんだアイゲウスAegeusは息子sonにSad Aegeus to his son、もし万が一By any chance、生きて帰ってこられたらならIf he can come back alive、帰国Return homeの途上On the way back to home、船shipの黒い帆Black sailを白い帆White sail（あるいは赤い帆Red sail）に変えるようにTurn
the black sails of a ship into white sailsと言ったhe said that。
ミノタウロスMinotaurはラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthで犠牲sacrificeとして差し出された者たちを食べたMinotaur ate those offered as sacrifices in the labyrinthとも、彼らは餓死するまでさまよっただけだとも言われているIt is also said that they just wandered until they starved to
death。
彼らは武装もせずクレタ島Creteに行かねばならなかったThey had to go to Crete unarmedが、彼らのうちの1人が怪物Monsterをうまく退治して脱出の道Escape wayを見出せばIf one
of them successfully gets rid of the monster and finds a way out、犠牲sacrificeを捧げる義務Obligationは以後、無効Invalidとされると定められていたThe obligation to make sacrifices was subsequently stipulated to
be invalidated。
テセウス Theseus
ミノタウロスMinotaurの犠牲者Victimたちがクレタ島Creteに連れていかれた船Ships taken by
Minotaur victims to Creteが、アテナイAthensの船shipであったか、クレタ島Creteの船shipであったかについては議論が分かれたThere was controversy over whether it was an Athens ship or a
Crete ship。
前者の解釈Interpretation of
the formerは、もしテセウスTheseusが戻ったのならIf Theseus is back、彼は帰国Return homeするため船shipを持っていたことになりHe had a ship to
return home、従って父親fatherに無事に帰ったことを知らせるため、帆sailを変えることができたSo he was able to change the sails to let his dad know that he had
returned safelyという話と合致するConsistent with the
story。
ミノス Minos
後者の解釈Interpretation of
the latterは、ミノスMinosが往路の旅outward journeyで、少女girlsの1人でメガラの王King of Megara・アルカトオスAlcathousの娘daughterに手を出そうとしたところWhen Minos tried to reach out to one of the girls on his outbound
trip、テセウスTheseusが怒って彼のいたずらから少女girlを守ったのでBecause Theseus got angry and protected the girl from his mischief、ミノスMinosが腹を立てたMinos got angryという言い伝えと重なるIt overlaps with the legend。

テセウスTheseusとペイリトオスPirithousは、2人ともやもめwidowerになるとWhen
Theseus and Pirithous both become widow、互いに助け合ってHelp each other自分たちの地位にふさわしいと考えられるような妻A wife who seems to
be suitable for their positionを得ようと約束し合ったthey promised to get a wife。
そして2人はゼウスZeusの娘daughterを選んだ。
And they chose Zeus's daughter.
まず彼らはスパルタSpartaに出かけ、レダLedaの娘daughter・ヘレネHelene（ヘレネHelen）を奪ってテセウスTheseusの花嫁brideとした。
First they went to Sparta, robbed Helen of Leda's daughter and made them the bride
of Theseus.
プルタルコスPlutarchによればAccording to Plutarch、2人の王KingはどちらがヘレネHelenと結婚marriageすべきかを見るためにくじ引きLotteryをしたというThe two kings said they had a lottery to see who should marry
Helen。
ヘレネHelenはまだ12歳にすぎなかったが、すでに美人beautiful girlの誉れ高かった。
Helen was only twelve years old, but she
was already a beautiful woman.
アイトラ Aethra
彼らはヘレネHelenがアルテミスArtemisの神殿templeで踊っているところを見つけThey find Helen dancing in the Temple of Artemis、アッティカAtticaのアピドナイAphidnaに彼女を連れ去ったThey took her to Aphidna in Attica。
その地でIn that placeテセウスTheseusは、ヘレネHelenが自分と結婚marriageするにふさわしい年齢に達するまでTheseus, until Helen reaches the age suitable for marrying her、母mother・アイトラAethraに彼女の世話をしてもらったhe had his mother, Aethra, take
care of her。
ハデス Hadesとペルセポネ Persephone
さて今度はペイリトオスPirithousが花嫁brideを得る番であった。
Now it was Pirithous’ turn to get a bride.
そこで彼はハデスHadesの妻wife・ペルセポネPersephoneを選んだ。
So he chose Hades's wife, Persephone.
ペイリトオスPirithousとテセウスTheseusが冥界the Underworldに降りるとWhen Pirithous and Theseus
descend into the underworld、ハデスHadesは2人をうやうやしくもてなす振りをしたHades pretended to treat them respectfully。
ペイリトオス Pirithous
しかし、ハデスHadesに促されて彼らが椅子Chairsに腰をおろすと体が椅子Chairsにくっついて離れなくなってしまった。
But when Hades prompted them to sit down in their chairs, their body stuck to the
chairs and they couldn't get away.
そして、彼らは自分たちが何者であるかすっかり忘れてしまった。
And they have completely forgotten who
they are.
彼らは忘却の椅子Chairs of Forgetfulnessに腰をかけていたのである。
They were sitting in oblivion chairs.
ケルベロス Cerberus
ペイリトオスPirithousは、そこに永久に残されPirithous is left there forever、ウェルギリウスVergilius（バージルVergil）によればAccording to Vergil、テセウスTheseusも同様だったというTheseus was the same。
だが、もっとよく知られている説ではBut the more
well-known theory、テセウスTheseusは、しばらくしてヘラクレスHeraclesが冥界the Underworldの番犬watchdog・ケルベロスCerberusを取りに来たとき救い出されたAfter a while, Theseus was
rescued when Heracles came to pick up the guard dog of the underworld, Cerberusと言われるIs said。

カストルCastorとポリュデウケスPolydeucesは叔父Uncle・レウキッポスLeucippusの娘Daughtersたち、ポイベPhoebe、ヒラエイラHilaeiraとの結婚marriageを望んだ。

テセウスTheseusがアテナイAthensに戻ってみると、市は混乱しWhen Theseus returns to Athens, the city is confused、自分がひどく人望popularityのないことが分かったhe found himself terribly unpopular。
それというのはJust because、ヘレネHelenの兄弟brothersのディオスクロイDioscuriに率いられたスパルタ人the Spartansがthe
Spartans led by Helen's brothers, Dioscuri、ヘレネHelenを救出せんとアッティカAtticaに侵入してアピドナイAphidnaを略奪しInvades Attica to rescue Helen
and plunder Aphidna、アイトラAethraを連れ去ったからであるBecause they took Aethra away。
アピドナイ Aphidna スキュロス島 Scyros
アテナイAthensは、エレクテウス2世Erechtheus IIの子孫descendants・メネステウスMenestheusの支配下に置かれUnder the control
of、テセウスTheseusの息子sons・アカマスAcamasとデモポンDemophonはエウボイア島Euboeaに難を逃れていたEscape the hardship。
アテナイAthensから逃れざるを得なかったテセウスはTheseus had to escape from Athens、スキュロス島Scyrosに赴きGo to、そこで祖父grandfather・スキュリオスScyriusから領地territoryを受け継いだInherited
the territory。
（これは、テセウスTheseusの父father・アイゲウスAegeusがスキュリオスScyriusの子childで、パンディオン2世Pandion
IIの子childではないとする言い伝えと一致するConsistent with the legend that Aegeus is not children of Pandion II。）
リュコメデス Lycomedes王Kingの宮廷Courtでのアキレウス Achilles
スキュロス島の王King of Scyros・リュコメデスLycomedesは、表向きには彼を親切に迎え入れたがLycomedes, King of Scyros ostensibly welcomed
Theseus kindly、自分の王国にIn his kingdomこれほど強力で危険な人物Powerful and dangerous personがいることをひそかに恐れていたhe was secretly afraid of someone so powerful and dangerous。
それで彼はテセウスTheseusを断崖cliffの上に連れ出しSo Lycomedes took Theseus out
to the top of the cliff、うわべは彼に島islandの自分の領地territoryを見せる振りをしてApparently
pretending to show Theseus his territory on
the island彼を裏切りbetrayal、崖cliffから突き落としたBetrayed Theseus and pushed him off the cliff。
これがアテナイAthensの創始者Founderと言われる、その最も偉大な英雄The greatest heroの最期Last Momentである。

リュコメデス Lycomedes
メネステウスMenestheusはトロイア戦争Trojan Warの時までUntil the time of the Trojan WarアッティカAtticaを支配し続けContinue

Menestheus died in the war。
それからテセウスTheseusの息子son・デモポンDemophonが、トロイア攻略sacking of Troy中アイトラAethraを救出しThen Theseus's son,
Demophon, rescues Aethra during the Troy
capture、アテナイAthensに戻って父fatherの王国kingdomを受け継いだReturned to Athens
and inherited his father's kingdom。
キモン Cimon
紀元前475年頃Around 475 BC、アテナイAthensの将軍general・キモンCimonは、人気取りの一環Part of
popularityとしてスキュロス島ScyrosからテセウスTheseusの骨remainsと思われるものを持って来てBringing what seems to be Theseus's bones from Scyros as part of their popularity、英雄heroに捧げられた神殿templeにそれを再び埋葬burialしたBuried
it again in a temple dedicated to the hero。
なぜなら、アテナイAthensの人々はBecause the people of Athens、その英雄heroこそマラトンの戦いthe Battle of Marathon in 490 BC（紀元前490年）で自分たちを援助してくれた人物だと信じたからである。
Because the people of Athens believed
that That hero is the person who helped them in the Battle of Marathon.

しかしパンディオン2世Pandion
IIはスキュロス島Scyrosの王King・スキュリオスScyriusの息子son（アイゲウスAegeus）を養子adopted sonにして実子Real childと称しているという噂があった。
パンディオン2世Pandion
IIが死ぬと、ニソスNisusがメガラの王King of Megaraになり、他の3兄弟three brothersはアッティカAtticaを攻めて、そこを支配していたメティオンMetionの息子sonsたちを追い払った。
初めは領土territoryを3兄弟three brothersで平等に分けるDivide
equallyことを約束Promiseしていたのに、勝利ののちアイゲウスAegeusは自分1人で領有することを主張し、その言い分を通した。
デルポイの神託 the Delphic oracle
アイゲウスAegeusは2度結婚marriageしたが、子供childがなかった。
そこでデルポイの神託Delphic oracleに計ったところ、アテナイAthínai（アテネAthens）に到着するまでは酒袋wineskinsの口bulging mouthを開いてはいけない、という意味不明のお告げcryptic wordsがあった。
アイゲウスAegeusは、友人のトロイゼンの王King of Troezena・ピッテウスPittheusに頼んで神託oracleの意味meaningを解いてもらおうと思った。
トロイゼン Troezen
デルポイDelphiからトロイゼンTroezenaに向かう途中、アイゲウスAegeusはコリントスCorinthに立ち寄ったが、そこでメデイアMedeaからアテナイAthensに神殿templeを造るように頼まれた。
メデイアMedea アイエテスAeetesとイデュイアIdyiaとの娘daughter
叔母auntのキルケCirceに似て腕のいい魔女witchで、ヘカテHecateに心服していた
メデイアMedeaはそのかわり自分の魔術Magicを使ってアイゲウスAegeusの望む子供childを与えようと約束Promiseした。
アイゲウスAegeusはアテナイAthensに帰ると、コリントスCorinthから逃れてきたメデイアMedeaと結婚marriageし、息子son・メドスMedusをもうけた。
メデイアMedeaがのちにテセウスTheseusを邪魔に思って憎んだのはこのためである。

ペロプスPelopsとヒッポダメイアHippodamiaとの息子son。
彼と兄弟brotherのトロイゼンTroezenは、ポセイドンPoseidonの孫grandson・アエティオスAetiusが支配者だったアルゴリスArgolisに定住した。
アエティオスAetiusが死ぬと、ピッテウスPittheusとトロイゼンTroezenはしばらくの間共同支配を続けたが、やがてトロイゼンTroezenも死ぬと、ただ1人王Kingとして残ったピッテウスは町を建設し、亡き兄弟brotherに因んでそれをトロイゼンTroezenと名付けた。
ピッテウス Pittheus アイトラ Aethra テセウス Theseus
ピッテウスPittheusは抜け目のない博学な人物で、アテナイAthensの王King・アイゲウスAegeusが解釈できない神託oracleを携えて彼のもとにやってきたとき、彼はそれがアイゲウスAegeusの息子sonが偉大な英雄Great heroになることを予言Prophecyしたものだと分かった。
トロイゼン Troezen
テセウスTheseusはピッテウスPittheusの宮廷courtで成長し、彼の王位継承者the successor to the throneに指名された。
後年、テセウスTheseusがトロイゼンTroezenではなくアテナイAthensの王Kingになったとき、テセウスTheseusは息子sonのヒッポリュトスHippolytusがピッテウスPittheusとともに住んでトロイゼンTroezenの王位throneを継承successionするよう、彼をトロイゼン市Troezenに送った。

アイトラAethra
トロイゼン王King of Troezen・ピッテウスPittheusの娘daughter。
テセウスTheseusの母mother。
はじめベレロポンBellerophonと結婚marriageすることになっていたが、ベレロポンBellerophonが殺人のかどBecause of murderでコリントスCorinthを追われたので、ピッテウスPittheusは結婚式weddingをとりやめにした。
アイゲウス Aegeus
アイゲウスAegeusがトロイゼンTroezenに来たとき、ピッテウスPittheusは娘daughterをスパイリアの島the island of Sphairiaにやり、そこでアイゲウスAegeusはアイトラAethraと一夜をともにした。
（のちに、たぶん娘daughterの評判reputationを守るため、アイトラAethraと交わったのはポセイドンPoseidonであるという話が広められ、その後生まれたテセウスTheseusはポセイドンPoseidonの子childと呼ばれることが多い。）
トロイゼンTroezenを出る前にアイゲウスAegeusは、彼女との関係を証明する品（剣swordとサンダルsandals）を岩huge rockの下に隠しておいた。
アイトラ Aethra テセウス Theseus
それから、テセウスTheseusがアテナイAthensの王Kingになったのち、アイトラAethraも同行して一緒に暮らしていたが、テセウスTheseusがペイリトオスPirithousとともに冥府the Underworldに行っている間に、ゼウスZeusの息子sons・カストルCastorとポリュデウケスPolydeucesが、ヘレネHelenの奴隷slaveにするためにアイトラAethraをさらった。

カストル Castorとポリュデウケス Polydeuces
これはテセウスTheseusがヘレネHelenを奪ったことに対する仕返しである。
同時に彼らは、アイトラAethraがヘレネHelenを預かっていたアッティカAtticaのアピドナイAphidnaからヘレネHelenを救い出した。
ヘレネHelenはアイトラAethraをトロイアTroyまで連れて行ったが、トロイアが陥落the fall of Troyしたのちは、アガメムノンAgamemnonが、アイトラAethraの孫grandsonsのデモポンDemophonとアカマスAcamasとに、彼女をアッティカAtticaに連れ戻すことを許した。
ダイダロス Daedalus
「名工cunning
worker」の意。
アテナイAthensの伝説的な工人skillful
craftsman。
多様な技術Technologyと発明inventionとで名高かった。
彼の父fatherはエレクテウスErechtheus王Kingの息子sonと伝えられる「賢い手を持った」エウパラモスEupalamus、あるいは「物知りの」メティオンMetionであった。
ソクラテスSocratesは自分のことをダイダロスDaedalusの子孫descendantsと呼んでいた。
ダイダロスDaedalusは長じてアテナイAthens随一number-oneの画家painter・彫刻家Sculptorとなった。
彼の作品workはあまりに真に迫っているtrue to natureので、まるで本物のように見えたLooks real。
ヤマウズラ （山鶉） Daurian

彼の姉妹sisterは自分の息子son・ペルディクスPerdix（タロスTalusあるいはカロスCalosとも呼ばれる）を彼に徒弟apprenticeとして与えた。
その少年boy・ペルディクスPerdixはダイダロスDaedalusよりもさらに優れた工人craftsmanとなる素質Qualitiesを持っていた。
彼は蛇の顎骨jawbone of a
snakeあるいは魚の背骨spine of a fishをまねて鋸（のこぎり）sawを発明inventionし、またコンパスcompassと轆轤（ろくろ）latheとを発明inventionしたからである。
そのためダイダロスDaedalusは彼に激しい嫉妬envyを抱き、アクロポリスAcropolisの山頂mountaintopから、あるいは崖cliffから海seaへ、彼を突き落として殺した。
ペルディクスPerdixをその巧みな技skillful workのゆえに愛していたアテナ女神the goddess Athenaは、彼が墜落fallingしていくのを見て、彼をヤマウズラ（山鶉）the Perdix（partridge）に変えた。
それ以後、この鳥birdは彼の名で呼ばれるようになった。
ミノス Minos
クレタ島 Crete
この罪crimeのためにダイダロスDaedalusはアレイオス・パゴスAreios Pagosの法廷で裁かれた。
その判決に従ってか、あるいは自発的にか、彼は国を出てクレタ島Creteへ赴いた。
クレタ島CreteではミノスMinos王Kingが彼を迎え入れた。
ダイダロスDaedalusは王Kingの要請によって素晴らしい工芸技術craft skillsの腕前を発揮したが、中でも最も珍奇な考案物deviceは人工の牝牛wooden cowだった。
海神Sea god・ポセイドンPoseidonからミノスMinosに贈られた牡牛bullに激しい恋情lustを抱いた王妃Queen・パシパエPasiphaeは自分の欲情lustを満たすために、その木製の牝牛wooden cowの中に入った。
ポセイドンPoseidonの牡牛bullはその造り物に欺（あざむ）かれ、その牝牛cowと交わったため、その結果、中にいたパシパエPasiphaeは半人半牛Half-human
half-bullのミノタウロスMinotaurを身ごもった。
ラビュリントス （迷宮） Labyrinth
ミノスMinosはこの怪物Monsterの存在を恥じて、これを隠すことを決心し、ダイダロスDaedalusにラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthを造らせた。
これは地下の迷路Labyrinthで、多くのトンネルtunnelや廊下Corridorと1つの入口entranceから成り、中に入った者は2度と外への道を発見できないように考案されていた。
ミノタウロス Minotaur
ミノタウロスMinotaurはその中心部に置かれた。
それは人肉Human fleshを常食staple foodとした。
ミノスMinosによって戦争warで打ち負かされたアテナイ人the Atheniansは、毎年Every year、あるいは9年毎Every nine yearsに、7人の少年Seven boysと7人の少女Seven girlsを貢物tributeとしてミノスMinos王Kingのもとへ送ることを強いられ、それらの少年少女boys and girlsはミノタウロスMinotaurの餌食preyとして1人ずつラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthへ送り込まれた。
アリアドネの糸 Ariadne's string
何年かしてテセウスTheseusがクレタ島Creteへやって来たときに、ミノスMinosの娘daughter・アリアドネAriadneから彼に与えられた糸巻spoolは、ダイダロスDaedalusの考案したものであったが、テセウスTheseusは、ミノタウロスMinotaurを殺したあと、その糸巻spoolのおかげでラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthから外へ出ることができた。
ダイダロス Daedalusとイカロス Icarus
ミノスMinosはダイダロスDaedalusの裏切りbetrayalを知って、彼とその幼い息子young son・イカロスIcarus（ダイダロスDaedalusがミノスMinosの女奴隷Female slaveによって得た子child）とをラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthに閉じ込めたimprisoned。
通常の方法ではとうてい脱出できないことを知っていたダイダロスDaedalusは、鳥の翼wings of a birdのようなものを作り空を飛んで脱出しようと決心した。
彼は蠟（ろう）waxと羽feathersとを用いてイカロスIcarusと自分のために翼wingsを作った。
そして、高く飛び過ぎればfly too high太陽の熱heat of the sunで翼wingsの蠟（ろう）waxが溶けてしまい、低く飛び過ぎればfly too low海の波しぶきsea foamで翼wingsが重たくなってしまうsoak the feathersことを少年・イカロスIcarusによくよく注意したあとで、ダイダロスDaedalusは空に飛び上がった。
イカロスIcarusもすぐそのあとに従った。
ダイダロス Daedalusとイカロス Icarus
パロス島 the island of Paros、デロス島 the island of Delos、サモス島 Samos
彼らは北東Northeastに飛んで、パロス島the island of Paros、デロス島the island of Delos、サモス島Samosを通り過ぎた。
しかしスポラデス諸島the Sporades islandsと小アジアAsia Minorのイオニア海the Ionian Sea岸との間の海Seaにさしかかったとき、イカロスIcarusは興奮のあまり高く飛び過ぎてfly too
highしまった。
太陽the sunに近づいたために翼wingsの蠟（ろう）waxが溶け、彼はまっさかさまに海へ墜落fell into the oceanした。

イカリア島 the island of Icaria
その海Seaは、今ではイカロスIcarusに因んでイカリア海the Icarian Seaと名づけられている。
そのすぐ近くにある今日イカリア島the island of Icariaと呼ばれている島islandにダイダロスDaedalusは着地し、海Seaから息子sonの死体dead
bodyを回収して埋葬burialした。
『イカルスの星』 越路吹雪（こしじ・ふぶき）
ダイダロスDaedalusの甥nephew・ペルディクスPerdixの変身Transformしたヤマウズラpartridgeが、彼の悲嘆に暮れるさまを見てほくそえんだ。
他の説によれば、パシパエPasiphaeがダイダロスDaedalusをラビュリントス（迷宮）Labyrinthから救い出したという。
それから彼は船shipを造り、それを推進する帆sailを始めて考案して、イカロスIcarusとともにその船shipに乗ってクレタ島Creteから逃げて行ったという。
シシリア島 Sicily
彼はシシリア島Sicilyへ行き、シシリア人SicilianのカミコスCamicus王King・コカロスCocalusの宮廷Courtに匿ってもらった。
しかし復讐revengeの決意に燃えるミノスMinos王Kingは、次のような手段を使ってついに彼の所在を突きとめた。
彼は西方のすべての支配者たちのもとへ出かけて行って、渦巻状の貝殻spiral seashellに糸stringを通すにはどうすればよいかと、全員に同じ問題を出した。
コカロスCocalusが糸stringの通された巻貝spiral seashellをミノスMinosに返したとき、ミノスMinosはコカロスCocalusがダイダロスDaedalusを匿（かくま）っていることを確信した。
ダイダロスDaedalus以外の誰にもその難問を解決できるbe able
to solve the riddleはずがないと考えたからである。
ダイダロスDaedalusは貝殻seashellの先端に穴holeをあけ、1匹の蟻an antに糸stringをくくりつけて貝殻seashellの中に入り込ませたという。
蟻an antは貝殻seashellの中を曲がりくねりながら進み、ついに先端の穴holeから出てきた。
ピンク貝queen conch 巻貝Conch
ミノスMinosはダイダロスDaedalusを引き渡すよう要求したが、コカロスCocalusは断った。
ダイダロスDaedalusが彼のために難攻不落の市Impregnable
cityを建設constructionしていたからである。
ミノス Minos
コカロス Cocalus
ミノスMinosは市cityを包囲した。
コカロスCocalusは和解settlementの態度を装って、ダイダロスDaedalusを引き渡すと約束し、ミノスMinosを食事に招待Invite to eatした。
ミノスMinosはまず風呂bathを勧められた。
昔からのやり方で王Kingの3人の娘daughtersたちが、彼を入浴take a bathさせることになっていた。
しかし水道管工事Water pipe constructionの技術Technologyを身につけていたダイダロスDaedalusが、管Water pipeの装備された風呂bathを造っていた。
管Water pipeから熱湯boiling waterが噴出し、ミノスMinosは苦悶のうちに死んだ。
他の説によれば、コカロスCocalusはミノスMinosの軍隊armed
forcesと戦って戦死Killed in actionしたという。
